Chapter 169 Brought Back Safe and Sound
Chapter 169 Brought Back Safe and Sound
Skylar looked at him, the unease in her heart settling slightly.
Yes.
With Reuben here.
No matter what happened, he'd be with her.
Just looking at him made Skylar feel extraordinarily safe.
The car drove quickly, and before long, they arrived at the hospital.
Skylar and Reuben got out and hurried toward the emergency building.
Just as they reached the emergency entrance, they saw a young man in a delivery uniform pacing anxiously back and forth.
This must be the delivery driver who'd saved Jade.
Skylar walked over quickly. "Hello, I'm Skylar."
The young man heard her voice and immediately turned around.
Seeing Skylar, his eyes lit up. "You're finally here!"
"Where's Jade? How is she?" Skylar asked urgently.
"She's already been taken in for emergency treatment." The young man pointed toward the emergency room. "She just went in not long ago. The doctor said she's seriously injured—severe blood loss. They're still working on her."
Skylar's heart leapt into her throat.
Still in emergency treatment...
"Thank you." Reuben stepped forward and patted the young man's shoulder. "We're lucky you were there today. Otherwise, she might not have made it."
"No, no, it was nothing really." The young man scratched his head, a bit embarrassed. "Anyone would've helped if they saw something like that."
Reuben pulled a business card from his pocket and handed it to him. "This is my card. If you ever need anything in the future, or run into any trouble, call this number."
"If there's anything I can help with, I will."
The young man took the card and glanced at it.
When he saw the name on the card, his eyes widened.
...Reuben Dickson?
The Reuben Dickson?
Oh my God...
He'd just saved someone Reuben Dickson knew?
What were the odds!
The young man held the card, his hands trembling slightly.
"Mr. Dickson..." he stammered, "you're too kind. I really didn't do much..."
"You saved a life. That's enough." Reuben smiled warmly. "By the way, the medical expenses you covered—I'll have my assistant transfer them to you shortly."
"And whatever deliveries you missed today, I'll cover those losses too."
"No, no!" The young man waved his hands frantically. "Ms. Sterling already transferred me ten thousand! That's more than enough, really, you don't need to!"
"That was from her. This is from me." Reuben's tone left no room for argument. "These are separate matters."
"You saved someone. You deserve this."
The young man wanted to protest but was stopped by Reuben's gaze.
He could only nod. "Then... thank you."
"No need to thank me." Reuben waved his hand. "If you still have deliveries to make, go ahead. We'll take care of things here."
"Ah, okay." The young man nodded, glancing once more toward the emergency room. "If... if that woman pulls through, could you let me know? I'm pretty worried about her."
"Of course." Reuben nodded. "When there's news, I'll have my assistant notify you."
"Thank you, Mr. Dickson!"
After a few more polite exchanges, the young man finally left.
Skylar stood outside the emergency room, staring at the red light above the door that read "Emergency Treatment in Progress." Her heart churned anxiously.
Her hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles had gone white.
Reuben walked to her side and gently took her hand. "Don't worry. She'll be okay."
Skylar shook her head, her voice trembling. "I'm so scared..."
"Scared they won't be able to save her..."
If Jade didn't make it, she'd never forgive herself.
"She will." Reuben pulled her into his embrace, his voice soothing. "Medicine is so advanced now. She'll be fine."
"I've already sent for the best surgical specialists. They'll be here soon. They'll save Jade."
Skylar leaned against him and nodded, though her heart still raced with fear.
Time crawled by, second by second.
She didn't know how long had passed.
Finally, the emergency room light went out.
Skylar's heart tightened. She immediately stepped forward.
The door opened, and a doctor emerged, removing his mask.
"Doctor!" Skylar rushed up to him, asking urgently, "How is she? Is she okay?"
The doctor looked at her and shook his head, his tone heavy. "The patient lost a lot of blood, and her wounds are infected. The situation isn't optimistic."
"We managed to stabilize her for now, but she's not out of danger yet."
"She needs to be transferred to the ICU for observation over the next few days. We'll see if she can pull through."
Skylar's face went pale instantly.
Not out of danger yet...
"Then... when will she wake up?" Skylar's voice shook.
"That's hard to say." The doctor sighed. "It depends on her will to survive."
"If she can make it through tonight, she should be okay."
"If she doesn't..."
The doctor didn't finish, but the implication was clear.
Skylar stumbled, nearly losing her balance.
If she doesn't make it through tonight...
How could this be...
"Skylar!"
Reuben reacted quickly, catching her.
"Are you alright?"
Skylar shook her head, her face ashen.
She looked at the doctor, her lips moving as if to speak, but no sound came out.
The doctor glanced at her and added, "Don't worry too much. We'll do everything we can."
"We'll transfer the patient to the ICU now. You can go handle the paperwork."
With that, the doctor turned and left.
Skylar stood there, her entire body cold.
Jade...
Would Jade really not make it?
This was all her fault.
If it weren't for her, Jade wouldn't have suffered like this.
"Skylar, don't do this." Reuben held her, his voice full of concern. "The doctor only said she's not out of danger yet. He didn't say there's no hope."
"I've already sent for the best surgical specialists in the country. They'll be here soon. They'll save Jade."
"Trust me, okay?"
"Reuben..." Her voice broke. "I'm so scared..."
"I'm scared she won't make it..."
"She will." Reuben held her tightly, his voice low and steady. "I'm here. I won't let anything happen to her."
"I promise."
Skylar leaned against him, tears finally falling.
She was truly terrified.
Terrified that Jade would slip away.
Terrified that she'd owe another life.
Reuben held her, gently patting her back, murmuring soothing words.
But his eyes had gone cold.
Wilma.
That woman was getting more and more brazen.
To think she'd go this far.
It seemed he'd been too merciful before.
This time, he absolutely wouldn't let her get away with it.
Meanwhile, Amber stood beside a bed, holding a knife.
Her expression was sinister, like a demon ready to devour.
And lying on the bed before her was Chloe.
