Vanessa's POV

Despite my best efforts to guard my heart, I found myself falling for Alexander all over again. I tried so hard not to fall after everything that had happened, but my fragile heart had always belonged to him. I used to think I only loved Alpha Alexander as my best friends' father, but as I grew older, my thoughts about him changed. I started imagining what he looked like shirtless, wondering about the man beneath the surface.

My first fantasies had been about an older man with a young girl, something I brushed off at the time. Now, it's clear: I wanted him even before I knew I loved him. Each thoughtful gesture, each surprise, chipped away at the walls I had built around my emotions. The mere thought of him sent warmth spreading through me, my skin heating and my heart racing uncontrollably.

It was maddening, this tug-of-war between my heart and my mind. My heart yearned to be with him, to embrace the connection that pulsed between us with vibrant, undeniable energy. I couldn't deny the thrill I felt whenever I found another gift, another note, knowing it came from him. The delicate necklace he gave me was a constant reminder of his sincerity, resting against my skin like a promise.

But with that yearning came a lingering anger, a need to make him understand the pain he had caused. I wanted to punish him for leaving me to navigate the darkness alone. The conflict within me was a tempest, each emotion vying for dominance. When I lay in bed at night, memories of Alexander filled my mind. His piercing eyes and the intensity of his gaze haunted my thoughts. The memory of his touch, his voice, sent shivers down my spine. I tried to focus on the hurt and betrayal, but it was no use. My heart betrayed me, beating faster at the mere thought of him.

Evie, my wolf, was no help either. She sensed my turmoil and echoed my desires. "He is trying, Vanessa. You can feel it, can't you? He cares deeply."

I sighed, turning over in bed, staring at the ceiling. "Yes, I feel it," I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room. "But how do I reconcile that with everything he put me through?"

The days passed, and with each gesture, each stolen glance, I found myself slipping further into the depths of my feelings for Alexander. My emotions grew wilder and more untameable. Evie made it no easier for me. My skin flushed with warmth, and my heart pounded, an undeniable response to the man who had once shattered me and was now piecing me back together.

I wanted to forgive him, to embrace the love that still lingered between us, but the pain of the past held me back. It was a delicate balance, this dance between love and retribution, but deep down, I knew my heart was slowly winning the battle. In quiet moments, when I allowed myself to dream, I could almost see a future where Alexander and I could be together, healed and whole.

One evening, as I sat in my room, lost in my thoughts about Alexander and the turmoil of my emotions, Evie stirred within me. Her presence was a comforting, familiar warmth, but tonight there was an urgency to her that I couldn't ignore.

"Vanessa," she began, her voice soft but laden with something heavy, "there's something I need to tell you."

I felt a pang of worry at her tone. "What is it, Evie?" I asked, my heart tightening in my chest.

She hesitated, as if gathering her strength. "I've been hiding something from you. I'm getting weaker by the day. That's why we haven't been able to master our powers since you shifted a week ago."

Shock and concern washed over me. "Weaker? Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

Evie's voice was laced with pain. "I didn't want to burden you. But you need to know... getting rejected once by Alfie bruised me so much that I thought I was going to die. I wanted to save you. When I saw what Alpha Alexander did to us after finding out we were his mate, I almost died again, thinking he was going to reject us too. But he didn't."

The weight of her words sank into me, and I felt a lump forming in my throat. "Evie, I had no idea..."

"I know, and I'm sorry for not telling you earlier. But now, the distance between us and Alexander is making me weaker. Our bond with him is like no other I've ever seen or heard, he partly completes us. We are different, Vanessa."

I took a deep breath, trying to process everything. "Why does the distance matter so much?"

"Because," she explained, her voice trembling, "the bond we share with Alexander is extraordinary. It's not just any mate bond. It's a bond that transcends the usual connections. We are meant to be together, and the distance is tearing me apart. I yearn for him, for his presence, because without it, I am fading and incomplete."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of Evie's suffering. "I'm so sorry, Evie. I never wanted you to go through this."

"You didn't know," she replied gently. "But now you do. And we need to decide what to do next. The bond we have with Alexander is powerful. If we can bridge the gap, if we can be with him, I believe we can grow stronger together."

My heart ached with the weight of her words. Despite the anger and hurt, the thought of losing Evie was unbearable. "I don't know if I can forgive him for everything he's done," I admitted, my voice trembling.

"You don't have to forgive him right away," Evie said softly. "But you need to understand the bond we share with him. It's unique, and it holds the key to our strength."

I nodded, wiping away my tears. "I'll think about it, Evie. I promise."

"Thank you," she whispered, her presence fading slightly but still there, a constant source of comfort and strength. "Whatever you decide, I'll be with you."

As the night wore on, I lay in bed, my mind swirling with thoughts of Alexander and the bond Evie spoke of. The decision ahead was daunting, but knowing the truth, I felt a renewed sense of determination to find a way forward-for both Evie and me.
