Chapter 65 Trouble in the pack
MITCH
"Again?" I frowned, looking up from my laptop at Mike, who had just returned from a call we got from the elders. I was busy with some last-minute preparations with Miles, who we sent him to check what the call was.
"The same." He nodded, sitting on the armchair across from mine. "The mode of death is still the same," he added.
"Their organs?" Miles questioned.
"Taken." Sighing, Mike relaxed in the chair. "I doubt I would ever get used to that gruesome scene."
I pinched the bridge of my nose as I closed the laptop to focus on him. This was the 10th case of horrid murder since this week. It started 7 days ago when we lost one of the best hunters in the pack. They are not what their names implied, though. Before we adopted technology and all that, the ones born into the hunters' family were great rangers. They know the forest like the back of their hands, and the right candidates to take with you for a hunt.
But since the adoption of technology, they were now used as guards. Hunters have a strong sense of smell and can sniff anything from miles away.
The man, Ransa, was found dead in his house, hanging from the chandelier in his sitting room. At first, it seemed like suicide until we noticed the blood on his body. It was then that we discovered something shocking. Whoever was responsible for his death harvested his tongue and cock.
At first, we thought it was an act of revenge. The law enforcers noticed nothing wrong with the corpse aside from that and believed he either cheated and was caught, or tried to commit suicide to exempt him from whatever the partner had in store for him, only to end up like this.
That was how it was ruled out. Not only that, but there was no sign of a struggle on him. The only odd thing about it all was there weren't any fingerprints from the culprit, something to point out that another person was engaged in that.
Most of the law enforcers speculated he was the one who removed his organs and buried them or did something with them before he killed himself.
However, when two more corpses emerged the next day, in the same position as the other hunter, we realized it wasn't as simple as we predicted. There seemed to be something going on in the pack which no one else knew about.
We tried to trace their death, to know what they did before they returned home and also find out what must have triggered the killer, who was still on the loose but found nothing.
The person was meticulous, leaving nothing behind. A week and we were still looking for them. None of the law enforcers have been successful in that. They all believed the person was either hiding somewhere or seeking the right opportunity to strike.
I sighed, my gaze going over to my brothers, who were at a loss as I was. The pack was expecting us to do something about this, go give an order for an arrest, but we have done nothing whatsoever. It wasn't our fault because none of us knew what the hell was going on. We were as clueless as they were.
"Should we tell our baby girl?" Mike suggested, looking at me and waiting for my agreement, knowing Miles would always agree with him.
I was the only one they needed to consult before we did something. Especially when it came to our mate. I was, after all, the one who thought things through before implementing them.
"And tell her what? That we are still searching for the killer? Who might be anywhere as we speak?" I scoffed, running my hand through my hair. "If you want her worried enough that she wouldn't sleep or have a moment of rest, we can go ahead and tell her that."
I shrugged, letting them know I wasn't debating this. Should they wish to do it, I will just watch them, with my arms folded. That was it.
They sighed, knowing I was telling the truth. Should our baby girl get to learn of this, it would only add to her worries. We had just had an argument with her about the number of hours she put into her work. She was stressed, as she was, not to talk of adding this to her list.
"What if she hears about it from others? Do you feel she would be happy with us?" Mike questioned, looking at us as he patiently waited for a reply.
"Who do you think would tell her about it in this pack?" I raised an eyebrow at him. "She's always going over to the human world. I doubt any of them would be nosy enough to stop her just to gossip
about the pack and the recent happenings."
"But-"
"We will find a way to make her work from home. It's dangerous to let her leave every morning. Should the psycho involved in all this happen to change gender preference, we will need to be careful
with her."
They nodded at my words.
"You have a point there, and I can't dispute it. However, do you think our baby girl will listen to us, should we ask her to work from home without giving her any reasonable excuse? She would suspect
that we either wished to keep her indoors or there was something we weren't telling her. Summer isn't dense. She can read between the lines." Mike stood up from the chair he was reclining on and
started pacing the floors.
