It was a very early morning and Lucien arrived in front of Amelia’s bedroom door. He eased it open and paused at the sight before him.
A flicker of amusement crossed his face as his brows lifted. ‘She sleeps on the floor’
The thought brought a small, fond smile to his lips as he stepped inside, watching her breathe softly in deep, undisturbed sleep.
Ever since he discovered she was his mate, Lucien had to admit, no matter how hard he tried to deny it, that he was still struggling to come to terms with everything.
Before her, his life had revolved around one thing: a deep, unrelenting grudge against the vampires, and the so-called elders. Now, it felt as though a thousand new emotions and complications had crashed into his world all at once.
Life had never been this… alive until she entered it.
And then there was the lingering mystery surrounding Amelia herself. The way Mikael had spoken about her made it clear he feared his own daughter, and that only made Lucien more intrigued.
However, he needed to deal with the current matter at hand.
Amelia’s lashes fluttered. Slowly, her eyes opened, hazy with sleep, and when they landed on the tall, imposing figure of Lucien standing over her, they widened in surprise.
“Luc?” Her voice was soft, husky with lingering sleep as she pushed herself up into a sitting position, one hand instinctively clutching the thin blanket to her chest. “Why are you here?”
A slow, devastating smile curved Lucien’s lips, the kind of smile that could make hearts stutter.
“Can’t I come to check on you?” he asked, his deep voice low and velvet-rough in the room. His gaze drifted pointedly to the empty bed behind her. “And tell me, Amelia… why are you sleeping on the damn floor when there’s a perfectly good bed right here?”
Amelia shook her head, looking slightly embarrassed. “I’m sorry… I tried. I really did. I guess I’m just not used to it yet.”
Lucian narrowed his eyes at her, understanding what she meant.
Of course she wasn’t used to it. She had spent her entire life in a dungeon with no bed to lie on, or anything comfortable.
Adapting to this new life of luxury and safety was like asking a wild creature to suddenly trust the golden cage it had been given.
So he offered her a warm, reassuring smile. “Well, you should try getting used to it. You can’t let the ghosts of your past keep stealing the peace you deserve in the present.”
Amelia met his gaze and gave a small, hesitant nod. She knew he was right afterall.
Just then, Silas’s voice cut through the mind-link, urgent and tense.
“Alpha.”
Lucian’s expression shifted instantly, his gaze turning distant.
‘What’s wrong?’ he replied through the link, sensing the gravity in Silas’s tone.
‘The elders… they’re here.’
Lucian’s jaw tightened, his mood darkening at once. ‘This early?’
He severed the mind-link and turned back to Amelia, masking his irritation with a neutral expression.
“There’s something I need to handle,” he said simply.
Without waiting for a reply, he turned and strode out of the room.
Amelia let out a heavy sigh, her shoulders slumping as she shook her head. A small, frustrated pout formed on her lips, the kind that revealed far more than words ever could.
Lately, it felt like she was slowly fading into the background of Lucien’s life. As Alpha, his responsibilities consumed him entirely with meetings, pack matters, endless decisions that demanded his attention from dawn until long after midnight. It was as if nothing else existed for him sometimes.
“I’m not exactly experienced in these things,” she whispered to the empty room, her voice soft and uncertain, “but… is this what a relationship is supposed to be like? Or…” Her brows drew together as a deeper, more painful thought took root. “Do we even have a relationship at all? Or is this just the mate bond talking? A biological pull… nothing more?”
She stared down at her hands, fingers twisting together in her lap.
‘What does it even mean to truly be in a relationship?’ she wondered, the question echoing loudly in her mind. ‘To be wanted, not just because fate decided it, but because he chooses me every single day?’
Meanwhile, across the pack grounds, Lucien walked into the grand Alpha Hall.
The moment he entered, the heavy wooden doors closing behind him with a resonant thud, he felt the shift in the air.
The elders were already seated around the long oak table, each one attended to by servants.
Their postures were relaxed, almost regal, as if they owned the very ground beneath them.
But it was the expressions on two faces in particular that made Lucien’s instincts flare with warning: Elder Cassian and Elder Varrick. Both wore smug, self-satisfied smirks that didn’t reach their calculating eyes.
Lucien’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. Whatever had brought them here unannounced this early, it wasn’t anything good for him. He could feel it in his bones.
“This is quite the unexpected visit,” he said coolly as he moved toward the head of the table, his powerful frame radiating dominance.
He lowered himself into the Alpha’s seat, his sharp gaze sweeping over every elder present. “To what do I owe the honor?”
For a moment, silence hung heavy in the room.
Then the High Elder, Elder Thorne, leaned forward slightly. “We have come on such short notice because a grave matter has fallen into our hands, one that demands immediate attention.”
Lucien raised a single brow, his expression calm yet edged with steel. “And what exactly is this grave matter? And more importantly… how does it involve me?”
“This concerns the murder of Alpha Connor Vale.”
