Memory Fragments

Memory Fragments
POV: Aria
I scream as the shadows pour out of me, but it's not my voice anymore. It's darker, cooler, filled with power that doesn't belong to me.
"Fight it, Aria!" Kael yells, but he sounds so far away.
The dead things rising from the dark aren't random monsters. I can see them clearly now - werewolves, witches, vampires, all the magical beings who died in wars over the ages. Their empty eyes glow with the same silver light that's burning me.
"You cannot resist me, daughter," Lucifer says, his hands burning cold on my shoulders. "This is your history. Your destiny."
But somewhere deep inside my mind, I find a memory that doesn't belong to him.
A boy bleeding in a swamp. My hands pushing against his cuts. "Stay with me. Don't you dare die on me."
The memory hits me like lightning, and suddenly I know why it feels so important.
It's Kael. Five years ago, during the Bayou Massacre, I saved Kael's life.
And in that moment of saving him, something changed inside me. My witch skills woke for the first time, not through anger or fear, but through love.
"I remember," I whisper, and my voice cuts through Lucifer's power like a knife.
The ghost army wavers, and several of the dead animals stop moving.
"Impossible," Lucifer snarls. "Your mind is mine now."
"No," I say, finding my own words again. "My mind is my own. And so is my power." I reach deeper into that memory, feeling the warmth of it chase away Lucifer's cold effect. I remember why I saved Kael - not because I knew him, but because it was the right thing to do.
The silver light starts turning from dark to bright, and the shadow forms begin to fade.
"Aria, yes!" Kael yells. "Keep fighting!"
But Lucifer isn't giving up. His grip on my shoulders tightens, and I feel his power pushing back against mine.
"You think one memory can save you?" he laughs. "I have had three hundred years to plan this moment. I know exactly what you are, what you can become."
"Then you know I'm stronger than you think," I tell him.
I close my eyes and let myself fall deeper into my memories. Not just the one about saving Kael, but all of them. The moment I first met him in his house. The way he protected me even when he thought I was his enemy. The night he told me his real name.
Every experience of kindness, of love, of deciding to help instead of hurt.
The bright silver light bursts outward, and Lucifer's hands are torn away from my shoulders.
"NO!" he roars, his beautiful face twisted with rage.
The shadow army disappears totally, the dead animals fading back to wherever they came from. The circle of dark power around me shatters like glass.
I fall to my knees, gasping for breath, but I'm free.
Kael is beside me instantly, pulling me into his arms. "Are you okay?"
"I think so," I whisper, holding onto him like he's the only real thing in the world.
Lucifer staggers backward, his strength clearly lessened. "This isn't over, daughter. You cannot run from what you are forever."
"Maybe not," I admit. "But I can choose what I do with it."
That's when Sarah Luna-Moon steps forward, her face filled with purpose. "Lucifer Luna-Moon, by the power of the Witch Council, I banish you back to the shadow realm."
She lifts her hands, and golden light streams toward Lucifer. But instead of tying him, the light goes right through him.
"The old banishment spells won't work anymore," Lucifer says with a cruel smile. "My daughter's awakening has changed the rules. I am free to walk this world again."
"Then we'll find a new way to stop you," Alexander says grimly.
"Will you?" Lucifer asks. "Even knowing that killing me might destroy her too? We are joined now, through blood and power. Kill me, and you risk killing the girl you're all trying to protect."
The words hit everyone like a physical blow. If Lucifer is telling the truth, then we can't defeat him without risking my life.
"You're lying," Kael snarls.
"Am I?" Lucifer tilts his head. "Test it if you dare. But remember - if I die, so does every Luna-Moon witch in existence. Including your precious mate."
Sarah goes pale. "The family link. If the original source is lost..."
"Everyone connected to that bloodline dies with it," Lucifer finishes. "So you see, I am untouchable now."
He starts walking toward the broken windows, but then he stops and looks back at me.
"I'll give you time to think about this, Aria," he says kindly. "But soon, you'll come to me freely. Because I'm the only one who can teach you to handle your power right."
"I'll never join you," I tell him.
"Never say never, daughter," Lucifer answers. "Wait until your power starts hurting the people you love. Wait until you accidentally kill someone during one of your angry attacks. Then you'll understand why you need me."
He steps through the window and goes into the night, leaving behind only the smell of sulfur and shadows.
The room goes silent except for the sound of people breathing deeply.
"Is he gone?" Murphy asks nervously.
"For now," Sarah says softly. "But he'll be back. And next time, he'll be stronger."
I look around at all the people who risked their lives to save me. Kael, my father Vincent, even my mother Maria who betrayed her own values to protect me.
"I'm sorry," I whisper. "This is all my fault."
"No, it's not," Kael says strongly. "You didn't choose to be born into this."
"But I did choose to awaken my powers," I point out. "If I hadn't fought back against Luna, none of this would have happened."
"And if you hadn't fought back, you'd be dead," Vincent says. "You made the right choice, sweetheart."
But I can see the worry in everyone's eyes. They're all thinking the same thing I am - what if Lucifer is right? What if my power is too dangerous to control?
That's when Detective Murphy clears his throat. "I hate to interrupt, but we have bigger problems than one rogue supernatural."
"What do you mean?" Alexander asks.
Murphy points to his radio, which is buzzing with emergency messages. "Rosa's word has done more harm than we thought. Supernatural animals are coming out of hiding all over the country. There have been attacks in twelve big towns in the last hour alone."
"Attacks?" I ask, my heart sinking.
"Werewolf packs take over police offices. Vampire covens robbing blood banks. Witch rings cursing entire neighborhoods," Murphy lists darkly. "The secret is completely out now. Humans and magical animals are at war."
Maria raises her government weapon. "Then it's time to end this before it gets worse."
"How?" Rosa asks desperately. "How do we stop a war that's already started?"
That's when I realize something that makes my blood run cold. "Lucifer planned this," I whisper. "Rosa's message, the government weapons, even my power awakening - he's been manipulating everything from the beginning."
"That's impossible," Sarah protests. "He was banished—"
"But not powerless," I interrupt. "He said so himself. He's been affecting events for years, maybe decades, waiting for the right moment to return."
Kael's arms tighten around me. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying this war isn't wild chaos," I explain, the horrible truth becoming clear. " It's exactly what Lucifer wanted. Supernatural animals and people fighting each other, weakening both sides."
"So he can swoop in and take control of whoever's left," Alexander finishes sadly.
I nod. "And he's using me as his tool. Every time I use my power, I'm helping him somehow."
The weight of that realization crushes down on me. Everything I do to protect the people I love might actually be putting them in more danger.
"There has to be a way to break the connection," Kael says desperately.
"Maybe," Sarah says slowly. "But it would take finding someone with power equal to Lucifer's. And the only Luna-Moon witch who was ever that strong was—"
She stops mid-sentence, her face getting white with shock.
"Was who?" I demand.
Sarah looks at me with something between fear and hope. "The First Witch. The original Luna-Moon. She's the only one who might be powerful enough to break your link to Lucifer."
"But she's been sleeping for three hundred years," Rosa points out. "How would we even find her, let alone wake her up?"
"We don't have to find her," Sarah says quietly. "Because I just felt her presence. She's already awake."
"Where?" Vincent asks.
Sarah points toward the broken roof, where moonlight is pouring down through the holes.
"She's coming here. Right now."
As if called by her words, the temperature in the room drops twenty degrees. Frost starts forming on the windows. And through the hole in the roof, something falls like a falling star.
Not something. Someone.
A woman who looks exactly like an older version of me, with silver hair and eyes that glow like the full moon itself.
She lands gracefully in the center of the room, and every supernatural creature present immediately drops to one knee.
Even the dragon bows its huge head.
"Hello, children," the First Witch says in a voice like winter wind. "I hear my descendant has been causing trouble."
She looks directly at me, and I feel power so old and vast that it makes Lucifer's strength seem like a candle compared to the sun.
"Hello, Aria," she says softly. "We need to talk. But first..."
She turns toward the windows, her face stiffening.
"We need to deal with the army that's coming to kill us all."
