Territorial Disputes
POV: Kael
I grab Aria and roll us both behind the overturned table just as the ancient thing lunges through the window. Its claws rake deep scratches in the floor where we were standing.
Up close, it looks like a nightmare come to life. Part wolf, part shadow, with eyes that burn like red fire. This isn't just any old supernatural creature - it's a Shadow Wolf, one of the first werewolves ever made. They were thought to be extinct.
"Stay behind me," I tell Aria, shifting into a defensive crouch between her and the monster.
The Shadow Wolf talks in a voice like grinding stone. "Luna-Moon witch. You will come with me."
"Like hell she will," I snarl, feeling my own wolf rising to the surface.
But before I can shift, my father Marcus appears beside the Shadow Wolf. Not fighting it - standing with it.
"Hello, son," he says quietly. "I see you've been busy."
My blood turns to ice. "Dad? What are you doing here? How are you working with that thing?"
"This 'thing' is Fenris," Marcus says with respect in his voice. "The first Alpha. The father of all werewolves."
The ancient creature - Fenris - tilts his huge head toward me. "Your pup has been keeping secrets, Marcus. He has taken a Luna-Moon witch as his mate."
"I know," Marcus says, and his voice is full of sadness. "That's why I called you."
The deception hits me like a physical blow. My own father called this ancient monster to take Aria away from me.
"Dad, you can't do this," I say desperately. "She's my mate. My wolf has chosen her."
"Your wolf is young and stupid," Marcus snaps. "Just like you. Do you have any idea what you've done? Luna-Moon witches are dangerous. They've destroyed entire werewolf packs."
"Aria would never hurt anyone," I protest.
Fenris laughs, a sound like bones breaking. "Tell that to the Shadowmere Pack. Wiped out by a Luna-Moon witch three hundred years ago. All forty-seven monsters, dead in one night."
From across the room, I can hear other fights starting. The government troops are trying to contain the dragon. Rosa is yelling at her sister Maria about betrayal. Vincent is seeking answers about Aria's real father.
But all I can focus on is saving Aria from the two werewolves who are supposed to be my family.
"I won't let you take her," I tell them both.
"You don't have a choice," Marcus says sadly. "I'm still your Alpha. You will obey me."
He uses his Alpha voice - the commanding tone that causes other werewolves to submit. I feel the power of it hitting me, trying to make me step aside and let them take Aria.
But something inside me fights back. My love for Aria is stronger than pack rule.
"No," I say, and my voice comes out as a growl.
Marcus's eyes go wide with shock. No werewolf has ever resisted his Alpha order before.
"Impossible," he breathes.
Fenris seems amused. "The boy has found his true mate. Alpha orders don't work when a werewolf is protecting his destined partner."
"Then we'll do this the hard way," Marcus says, and I can see him begin to shift into his wolf form.
That's when Aria does something that surprises everyone.
She steps out from behind me.
"Stop," she says quietly, and her voice holds that strange silver power again. "I'll go with you."
"Aria, no," I say desperately.
"It's okay, Kael," she says, but I can see tears in her eyes. "I'm tired of people getting hurt because of me."
"Smart girl," Fenris says approvingly. "Come here, little witch."
But as Aria starts walking toward the old werewolf, I notice something. Her mother Maria is moving quietly around the edge of the room, her government weapon aiming not at the supernatural creatures, but at Vincent.
"Maria, what are you doing?" Vincent asks, noticing her approach.
"Something I should have done twenty years ago," Maria says coldly.
That's when she pulls the gun.
But instead of killing Vincent, she spins and fires at Fenris. The silver-charged energy blast hits the ancient werewolf in the chest, and he roars in pain and anger.
"Maria!" Rosa screams. "What have you done?"
"I've protected my daughter," Maria says strongly. "Fenris might be the first werewolf, but he's not immune to Luna-Moon magic."
Fenris staggers but doesn't fall. The cut on his chest is already starting to heal. "Foolish witch. You only delay the inevitable."
That's when the real chaos starts.
Marcus strikes Maria in revenge for shooting Fenris. The government troops start firing at every supernatural creature in sight. The dragon blasts fire at anyone who gets too close.
And through it all, I'm trying to get to Aria, who is caught in the middle of the fight.
"Kael!" she screams as a stray energy blast nearly hits her.
I fight my way through the chaos, taking down government troops and dodging dragon fire. My wolf is in full control now, focused only on reaching my mate.
But when I finally get to Aria, I find her bowing beside someone I didn't expect to see.
Luna Torres is on the ground, bleeding from a deep cut across her stomach. She must have been caught in the gunfire.
"Help her," Aria begs me. "Please, Kael. I know she hates me, but she doesn't deserve to die."
Even after everything Luna has done - trying to kill her, calling my father, putting all of us in danger - Aria still wants to save her.
This is why I love her. This is why my wolf picked her.
I kneel beside Luna and press my hands against her wound, trying to stop the blood. "Stay with me," I tell my ex-fiancée.
Luna's eyes flutter open, and she looks at Aria with confusion. "Why?" she whispers. "Why are you helping me?"
"Because that's what good people do," Aria says simply.
Luna stares at her for a long moment, then looks at me. "She's really your mate, isn't she?"
I nod. "Yeah. She is."
"I'm sorry," Luna whispers. "I'm sorry I tried to hurt her. I was just... I loved you so much, and I couldn't understand how you could choose her over me."
"Love isn't a choice, Luna," I tell her gently. "It just happens."
She nods weakly, then grabs my hand. "Kael, there's something you need to know. About why your father really called Fenris."
"What do you mean?"
"It's not just about Aria being a Luna-Moon witch," Luna says quickly. "Your father found out something else. Something about her real father."
My blood goes cold. "What about her father?"
"He's not human," Luna whispers. "And he's not dead. He's been looking for Aria her whole life."
Before I can ask more questions, Luna's eyes roll back and she passes out from blood loss.
I look around desperately for help, but the fight is getting worse. The government troops are losing against the supernatural creatures. More old beings are breaking through the windows. And somewhere in the chaos, I can hear Aria screaming.
I turn to find her, but she's not where I left her.
She's in the middle of the room, surrounded by a circle of silver light. Her eyes are shining brighter than I've ever seen them, and power is radiating from her in waves.
But she's not alone in the circle.
Standing behind her, with his hands on her shoulders, is a guy I've never seen before. He's tall and dark-haired, with eyes that glow the same silver as Aria's.
"Hello, daughter," he says in a voice that makes everyone in the room freeze. "I've been looking for you for a very long time."
Aria tries to turn around, but she can't move. The man's power is keeping her in place.
"Who are you?" she asks.
The man smiles, and his teeth are too sharp to be human. "I'm your real father, Aria. My name is Lucifer Luna-Moon."
The name hits the room like a rocket. Several supernatural beings drop to their knees. Even Fenris backs away in fear.
Sarah Luna-Moon screams. "That's impossible! Lucifer was banished three hundred years ago!"
"Banished, yes," the man agrees happily. "But never weak. I've been waiting in the shadow realm for my family to produce someone strong enough to bring me back."
He looks down at Aria with something that might be love or might be hunger. "And here you are, my dear daughter. The most powerful Luna-Moon witch ever born."
"I'm not your daughter," Aria says desperately. "Vincent Castellano is my father."
"Vincent Castellano raised you," Lucifer corrects. "But I made you. Your mother and I had one night together before she found out who I really was and ran away."
Maria makes a choking sound from across the room. "No. No, this can't be happening."
"Oh, but it is," Lucifer says with a wicked smile. "And now that I'm back, things are going to change. The magical world has hidden in shadows for too long. It's time for us to rule over the humans, as we were meant to."
The silver circle around Aria starts getting brighter, and I can feel the power growing to dangerous levels.
"What are you doing to her?" I snarl, trying to reach them but finding myself stopped by invisible force.
"I'm unlocking her true potential," Lucifer says. "With my guidance, she'll become the most powerful supernatural being who ever lived."
"And if she doesn't want that?" I demand.
Lucifer's smile turns cold. "She doesn't get a choice. Neither do any of you."
The power bursts outward from Aria, but this time it's different. Darker. Instead of her normal silver light, shadows pour from her like black smoke.
And in those shadows, I can see things moving. Ancient creatures that have been dead for ages, rising again.
An army of the supernatural dead, all under Lucifer's direction.
All controlled by my mate.
