Alyssa's POV
As I hid under the bed inside one of the rooms in the building where Marcus had asked me to wait for him I couldn't help but worry about Marcus and Ethan.
I don't even want to imagine how I would feel should anything happen to any of them.
My memory flashed back to the day I encountered the intruder at Ethan's destroyed pack. Now I understand what she meant when she said she would destroy me. She sees me as the barrier between Marcus and her.
That hurts but I couldn't understand why she will go to the extent of having me kidnapped. Besides Marcus is mine to begin with. He was chosen for me by the moon goddess.
Now that the word kidnap came to mind, I remembered Tommy. Tommy was in the courtroom too when the whole thing started. I just hope he made it out alive.
I wondered if Ethan had a hand in this. It is unlike Ethan to be this brutal. I have always known him to be a shy and kindhearted person but I saw how he pounced at the harmless judge stabbing him in the chest.
I was shocked but I hadn't had the time to think about it until now. What could have made him kill the judge?
The chaos outside showed no sign of abating anytime soon. This has been going on for hours but the fight I still fierce. It's as if they never get tired.
The snarls and growls of men as they fought each other, and the screams of the villagers as they were attacked sent chills down my spine. I couldn't help but imagine the horrific scene outside.
The piles of bodies, the blood, the cry and screams of the wounded, the terror in the eyes of women and children as they scamper for safety. I want to stop imagining it but I can't.
I heard the voice of a woman screaming. Then I heard footsteps and then a voice said
"I found this woman hiding under the bed, I believe people are hiding in these rooms. Let's search the rooms".
I froze at the hearing of this. At that moment I wished the earth will just open and swallow me.
"Please don't kill me sir" I heard the lady begging.
"That will depend on the pack you belong to," a man said. The voice was deep and coarse. I guessed it must be their leader or at least the one in charge.
"What pack do you belong to lady?" His first voice asked.
"I… I am… I" She stammered fear evident in her voice.
"Speak up lady" the voice yelled.
"North Moon pack sir. I am a member of the North Moon Pack" she said almost crying. That is Marcus's pack.
I heard both men laugh.
"This one is a special package," the second male voice said.
"It's time to go back home lady. Go out and choose the route you would like to take"
"What do you mean sir," she asked. I could hear in her voice that she was scared to death.
I heard the second male voice call a name. "Take her out let her choose how she would like to go home," he said.
"Have you confirmed who she is? "
"North Moon Pack" he replied simply and then I heard the lady beg for her life as they drag her out of the building.
"We should search the rooms, sir. I believe people are still hiding in here."
"No need Greg," he said. Why stress ourselves like that when there is an easier way to go about it. " he said and I heard footsteps receding.
I heaved a sigh. That was close I thought. I didn't know what he meant by there as a better way to go about it but I felt relieved.
But after what just happened, I knew the building was no longer safe. In fact, nowhere within the confines of this village is safe right now. The only way to be safe was to get out of the village.
I hoped wherever Marcus was he was already on his way back. I knew the earlier we leave this place the better.
While I waited, I thought of the possibility of Marcus not coming back.
I don't like to imagine he will die here but it has been hours since he left and we are in the middle of a war.
Anything could happen and the earlier I faced reality the better. I tried to think of ways I can manage to escape by myself just in case the need arise.
I browsed the room searching for a weapon I can use to defend myself.
I didn't need to be told that the lady a while ago was dragged out to be killed. Her crime was that she was a member of the North Moon Pack.
Even if I was going to die, I would not give them the pleasure of doing it easily. I will not watch them kill me like a chicken. I would fight until my last breath.
I was so engulfed in my thought that I didn't realize the buildings were being set on fire.
Before I knew it, the one I was in was engulfed in flames. In what seemed like seconds, smoke filled the air, stinging my eyes and making it hard to breathe. I coughed and choked, trying to find a way out.
I ran towards the door but it was blocked by fallen debris, and the windows were too high for me to reach.
I pushed as hard as I could but the door would not move. I saw an iron rod on the floor. I tried using to break the door knob but nothing worked. I soon realized I was just wasting my energy so I stopped.
I was trapped, with the fire closing in on me. I could feel the heat on my skin, and the smoke filling my lungs.
I tried to scream for help, but my voice was too weak. The sound of the fire drowned out any other noise, and the fight outsiwasere still on. I was alone, trapped in a burning building with no escape.
Every effort I made seemed futile. I had run out of ideas and I wasn't even thinking straight.
I couldn't believe the sudden turn of events. A while ago I was scared of getting killed by those men not knowing I was going to die by fire.
The thought of death made me panic. I have always seen death as a reform for my miserable life but now that death was right before me, I realized how much I want to stay alive.
I screamed as the room temperature was becoming unbearable. Slowly I began to loose at my strength.
The smoke grew thicker and my vision blurred. I knew that I was going to die.
