Chapter 49 Chapter 49

Chapter 49 Chapter 49
Mica looked out at the moon through the window and sighed when she heard a wolf howl in the distance.

That was the signal she'd been waiting for.

She picked up her jacket from a nearby chair and threw it on, spared one look at Oliver's half-naked form sleeping on the bed and let out a quiet sigh before walking out.

"I thought you changed your mind," Caroline said once Mica turned the corner of a hallway in the pack house, where she stood leaning against the wall with a gun in her hand.

"At an opportunity to step over our enemies?" Mica asked as she walked over to collect the gun Caroline stretched out to her. "Never. I've always dreamt of this day. Prayed even. There's no way I'm changing my mind"

Caroline nodded and turned to the young wolves beside her.

"Move discreetly and arm everyone. The omegas should lead the kids and elderly safely into the underground tunnel. Knock out anyone who won't cooperate. The enemies shall be upon us by soon. So make no mistakes and move fast, or this strange land shall be our final tomb."

The young wolves nodded and got to work. Caroline turned to Mica

"We should move to the field and keep track of where they'll come from."

Mica nodded, her eyes emotionless as she followed after Caroline, but once they got to the pack living room, they saw Chris trying to fend off the young wolves attempting to get past him.

The moment he sensed Caroline, however, his eyes shifted to her and he frowned.

"What the hell is going on, Caroline? Why are the soldiers preparing for battle?"

"Because a battle is coming our way. Tonight." The divine alpha deadpanned making Chris scoff.

"There is no battle, Caroline. What are you even on about? I told you the decision of the world leaders."

"It doesn't matter to me what the world leaders said because that doesn't guarantee our safety!" Caroline barked, the veins in her neck protruding, but she gritted her teeth to remain calm. "Eren went with you to lay the groundwork, and all he had to do was tell those against us where we were staying, that we'd move after tonight, and watch their reaction. And guess what?" Caroline laughed. "Against the order of the court, twelve packs are ready to mobilize their troops against us tonight. And we don't plan to back down. In fact, we intend to use this as a means to tell the world that we refuse to live by their conditions and that we've had enough."

There was pin-drop silence after her speech before Chris's shoulders started to shake and he burst into laughter, one that carried no humor.

"Twelve packs, and you think you stand a chance, huh, Caroline? You're all weak compared to what's coming. They'll trample on you like insects without mercy. So while there's still time, let go of your pride and lead everyone to safety right now."

"No," Caroline said bluntly.

Chris's eyes burned red, his fangs extended, and his claws grew out.

"I did everything in my power to restore a bit of this pack so that the one I love could have a pack to belong to," Chris growled. "And I am not about to allow a bunch of idiots who are disconnected from reality to ruin this for him"

Chris unclenched his fists, his claws fully extended as he pointed at them.

"And if any of you think you're going to get past me, it'll be over my dead body."

"I don't want to have to do this, Chris, considering everything you've done for us," Caroline said, her eyes flashing emerald green. "But you're in the way."

With a signal from her, the young fighters dashed at him.

Chris fought back, making sure to push them back into the house and not let them outside.

The young fighters were relentless, and so was Chris.

Time was running out, so Mica raised the gun she was carrying, aimed swiftly at Chris, and fired.

The silver bullet grazed his arm but didn't penetrate.

"We don't fucking have all day, Chris."

She walked up to him and raised the gun to his head.
"Let us through or we will indeed pass over your dead body"

Oliver came barreling downstairs at the sound of the gunshot.

"What are you doing, Mica? Why are you pointing a gun at Chris's head? I thought you said you had forgiven him."

Mica didn't look in his direction and she didn't answer him either, instead, her eyes met those of two strong alphas in front of her, and she mind-linked them.

"Restrain him."

Immediately, the wolves sprang into action and caught Oliver before he could reach her.

Drey rushed in at that moment too, making her curse under her breath.

"They just keep coming," she muttered.

"Mica... what the fuck is going on here?"

Without looking away from Chris, she fired the gun in Drey's direction. The bullet hit the ground close to his leg, and he stopped in his tracks, his eyes wide with shock.

"Mica...?"

"The world needs to pay for everything they've taken from us. Wouldn't you agree, Drey?"

Just then, the sound of army jets could be heard approaching from a distance.

"They're here!" Caroline shouted. "Everyone, attain your positions! Cory, lead the squad ten double-time in moving the kids! Combat fighters, you're with me! Shooters, prepare to bring the jets down!"

Chris watched with shocked eyes as everything began to unfold.

"Mica, put those three under arrest, quick, and come join us. Everyone else, disperse"

And so, the night that was supposed to be peaceful descended further into chaos.

At gunpoint, Mica led some others along with the three alphas down into the building's holding cells, where they were locked in.

The others turned and joined their comrades, leaving Mica to finish up by locking the door.

"Mica, you know this is wrong. Engaging in a fight just when the pack has finally gotten its freedom..."

"You call that freedom?" Mica cut Oliver off and looked at them before her gaze settled on Chris, who was facing the wall. "Thank you, Alpha Chris, for making this day come earlier. I thought I'd have to wait for Drey and Jeremy's child to grow up before we could achieve even half of this. But thanks to all of you, I met survivors of my pack, and now all my dreams can come true."

"Wasn't your dream to live among your people, have a pack, and have the world accept you?"

"As equals, Oliver, not as slaves. I bet Jeremy would agree. He's joining the fight too."

Drey's eyes widened, and he grabbed the cell door.

"Jeremy knows about this?"

Mica shook her head.

"No. But there's no way he'll sit back and let his pack fall. He's good with guns, so he'll be helpful."

"Mica don't let him join this fight, Jeremy is not as strong as he pretends to be"

"Say whatever you want Drey, but I've never met an omega quite as brave as Jeremy and I'd like to see which one of you would betray him for the world by going against his pack."

"Mica, let us out! We'll fight too! There's no way I'll let Jeremy hold a gun against trained soldiers!" Chris shouted.

Mica only let out a sigh.

"This matter is the Rendro Pack's problem. There's no need for y'all to get involved."

With that, Mica ran off, ignoring Drey's angry shout.

"I'm a Rendro Pack wolf too, Mica! Don't do this! Let me out! Shit!"

Drey kicked the door before turning to the others.

"What the fuck do we do?"

Chris seemed deep in thought, while Oliver looked betrayed.

He sat in a corner with his knees drawn to his chest, not really understanding why Mica had done this to him.

"We need to get out of here and get Jeremy away from this place." Chris said making Drey roll his eyes, that was a repeat of what he already said

"I know that, but how do we get out of here?"

Chris reached into his collar and pulled out his special key which he unlocked the door with.

Instead of going out immediately, Drey gave him a strange, confused look.

"If you had the key all along, why didn't you open the door?"

"I was waiting for that little bitch to leave."

Oliver immediately dashed at him and shoved him.

"Don't call her that!"

Chris shook his head.

"I don't have time for this."

With that, he rushed out.

"Come on, man," Drey said.

Oliver nodded and followed.

The moment they stepped outside, they were met with total chaos.

Wolves clashed with wolves while bullets and bombs rained down like water.

They followed Jeremy's scent while fighting their way through the battlefield until they found him lying flat on his stomach on a watch tower, firing his sniper rifle with deadly accuracy, every shot hit its target and he wasn't allowing anyone to get close enough to aim at him.

He looked like an expert, his face so serious one would think he'd been doing it all his life.

Drey continued fighting, yet his eyes never left his mate and Chris was doing the same.

Oliver, meanwhile, quietly searched the battlefield for Mica.

Suddenly, Drey and Chris noticed Jeremy wasn't shooting anymore. He hadn't been shot yet he had simply frozen, staring at something in the distance.
Then, without hesitation, he sprang to his feet and began running across the battlefield. No weapon, no cover, only pure terror on his face.

When they looked ahead to see what had frightened him so badly, they saw little Jaden running on his tiny feet across the battlefield toward his mother while crying.

Drey sprinted after them, his heart pounding as he swatted away every wolf who tried to block his path, friend or foe.

Oliver took control of the sniper rifle Jeremy had been using and immediately began providing cover fire.

But, as was always the case in war, you never know where the enemy is hiding.
Just as Jeremy reached Jaden and wrapped him protectively in his arms...

A gunshot rang out.

And Jeremy fell.
