Although Lance said he would be back soon, almost an hour had passed.
When he arrived, he saw Eula sitting on the hospital bed, one hand receiving an IV drip and the other holding a phone, engrossed in something.
Deanna sat beside her, reading a medical book.
Both of them looked up as they heard the door open.
"Lance, you're back."
"Lance, you're here."
Two different voices spoke simultaneously.
But Lance first responded to Deanna, his voice gentle, "Thank you for your hard work."
"I'm not tired. Have you eaten?"
Deanna shook her head lightly, looking at him with concern.
It was already close to two o'clock. If Lance had been busy with work, he probably hadn't had lunch.
In fact, that was exactly the case.
Lance said somewhat sheepishly, "I came back right after the meeting."
Hearing this, Deanna couldn't help but glare at him, ready to scold him.
But before she could speak, Eula's displeased voice interrupted.
"Miss Jones, Lance said he hasn't eaten. As his fiancée, why are you just standing there instead of preparing food?"
After speaking, Eula didn't care about Deanna's reaction and turned to Lance with a dejected expression. "It seems our previous jokes might come true. I might have to rely on you for support in the future."
She looked at Lance pitifully after finishing her sentence.
Deanna watched this woman's quick change of expression with an unreadable look.
However, she didn't say anything further and turned to go downstairs.
She left so decisively because she trusted Lance's feelings for her.
As for Lance, he didn't think much of Eula's words.
They had once agreed during a dangerous encounter that if either of them faced problems in the future, they would take care of each other.
Now that Eula had lost the ability to be a mother to save him, Lance naturally felt responsible.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of you."
"How do you plan to take care of me?"
Eula joked, but if one looked closely, they could see the anticipation in her eyes.
Unfortunately, Lance didn't notice and seriously considered the question.
A few seconds later, as if making a decision, he voiced his thoughts. "I'm very sorry that you can't have a baby. But if you like children, I can have my kids recognize you as their godmother. When you're old, I'll ensure they take care of you. Of course, this isn't enough to make up for your loss, so within my abilities, I can grant you three wishes."
"Any wish? Even if I ask you to marry me?"
Eula boldly tested him, her eyes fixed on Lance, not wanting to miss any change in his expression.
Equally tense was Deanna, standing around the corner outside the door.
She also wanted to know how Lance would respond.
Lance was unaware of this.
Upon hearing Eula's words, he frowned deeply and looked at her seriously. "You know that's impossible."
"I do know that. But I'm still curious. After all, I can't have children anymore. Even getting married will be difficult. Because of this, no one might want to marry me. Isn't it pitiful? I've lost the ability to be a mother and the chance to be loved. People in our circle might even mock me as an unwanted woman."
Eula's reasoning was strong enough to dispel Lance's doubts.
He looked at the despondent woman in front of him and was momentarily stunned.
It was his first time seeing the usually strong Eula show vulnerability.
He frowned and comforted her. "With your abilities, no one would dare mock you. As for love, if it's true love, it won't care about such flaws."
Speaking of love, Lance felt he had a lot to say.
So he used himself as an example for Eula.
"You know I have two children. But before meeting Deanna, I didn't know they were mine. When I met her, I thought their father was unknown. Even so, I fell for her and wanted to be good to her children."
As Lance recounted his love story, Eula's smile became increasingly forced.
She had been testing Lance's attitude but ended up being shown his affection for someone else.
Outside the door, Deanna struggled to hold back her laughter.
She never expected Lance to be so straightforward and stubborn.
The reason she said this was because she knew Lance always saw Eula as a buddy and never as a woman.
This was one reason she trusted Lance so much.
After composing herself, Deanna entered the room with a light smile on her face.
As she walked in, she saw Eula's bitter face and Lance's unusually gentle expression. She asked knowingly, "What are you two talking about?"
