"Chairman, madam, let me explain the situation to both of you," he said.
He then actively took the elders aside and stopped disturbing Deanna.
Xavier briefly explained the whole situation.
It was about how Lance had been attacked and injured some time ago, had a relapse, but fortunately, Deanna brought him back from the brink of death.
"So that's how it is..."
Meanwhile, Deanna was fully focused on treating him, holding her breath in concentration.
At such a critical moment, she dared not relax at all.
After a round of treatment, retrieving the needles inserted into Lance's body, Deanna was already drenched in sweat.
After explaining everything to the elders, they finally understood the dangerous incident that had happened to Lance.
Seeing that Deanna was finished, the elders quickly thanked her.
Samantha was particularly urgent, "Dr. Deanna, we were unaware of the situation just now, thank you for your assistance during this period!"
"Thank you so much!"
Deanna chuckled, shaking her head, "Madam, this is all part of my job, no thanks are needed. Mr. Mercer pays me for medical treatment, so naturally, I should treat him properly."
The elders nodded, "Even so, we should still thank Dr. Deanna."
Due to worries about Lance, Samantha still felt somewhat unsettled.
Typically, doctors with such credentials were well over fifty years old.
So young, could she really be reliable?
Thinking of this, Samantha blurted out,
"Dr. Deanna seems so young, yet so capable, may I ask from which university did you graduate?"
Though the question was intended as a compliment, it was more of a probe.
As sharp as Deanna, she certainly caught the undertone.
Her face still wore a smile as she replied, "Madam, I studied abroad and have obtained my medical practitioner's license, rest assured about that."
This completely alleviated Samantha's concerns.
She chuckled, masking her embarrassment, "Dr. Deanna, I didn't mean it that way."
Samantha turned her head back, glanced at Lance, and continued, "This child has always been in poor health, we've consulted many doctors but the problem has never been cured. I've heard a lot about your treatment methods, so I was just wondering if you really have a way to cure him?"
The most worrying thing in the world is being a parent, and Samantha's statement was a vivid demonstration of her concern for Lance.
This matter had long been a heavy stone on her heart.
Hearing this, Deanna immediately looked at Lance involuntarily.
His condition was not just 'a little bad'.
It seemed that Lance had concealed from his parents the fact that he might not have long to live.
While Deanna was pondering how to respond, Lance's eyes were already looking towards her.
Understanding the cue, she responded, "Madam, rest assured, I will do my best. I can't predict the final outcome, but at least Mr. Mercer is slowly improving now."
Hearing this, Samantha visibly relaxed.
Her look towards Deanna was even more grateful.
She excitedly grabbed Deanna's hand, repeatedly saying, "Dr. Deanna, then I ask you to take great care!"
"Yes," Deanna nodded, "Madam, I need to handle some medicine that Mr. Mercer will need soon."
Due to her unfamiliarity with the elders, rather than staying in an awkward situation, she preferred to handle something else.
Samantha nodded briskly, quickly releasing her hand, "Alright, Dr. Deanna, go ahead then."
...
About half an hour later, Deanna had finished preparing the medicine and returned to the room.
She removed the last silver needle from Lance's body, marking the end of the treatment.
"How are you feeling now?"
Lance sat up and replied, "My joints feel like they've been opened up, but I'm particularly exhausted."
Deanna nodded, "That's normal, I've already put the medicine in the bath, take a bath and you'll feel much better."
After standing bedside, collecting the silver needles and calmly instructing him on further precautions, she prepared to leave.
Lance looked up, "Let Xavier drive you home."
Deanna didn't refuse this.
Getting a cab home from here really wasn't convenient.
After a moment of thought, she nodded in agreement, "Okay."
After Deanna left, the elders didn't come to disturb Lance.
Having learned so much today, the couple was also taken aback, now letting the child rest properly.
...
On the way back.
Recalling Samantha's reaction and her words today, Deanna couldn't help but ask, "Xavier, why does Mr. Mercer need to hide it..."
This was something she couldn't quite understand.
Xavier replied, "Mr. Mercer certainly doesn't want to make the lady and others sad, that's why he has always kept it a secret."
"Which parent can be happy knowing their child won't live long?"
Deanna hesitated, "But they'll have to be sad eventually, right?"
"It's better than being sad too early."
Xavier's words left Deanna in silence.
She hadn't expected Lance, who usually seemed so cold, to have such a delicate side.
Suddenly, a different kind of emotion swept through her heart.
