As she walked out of the hotel, Emily adjusted the hat on her head, glancing around nervously before turning into a nearby alley.
Once inside, she saw a black sedan parked there.
She didn't approach immediately but stood still, clutching her handbag tightly. Her eyes, hidden behind sunglasses, were filled with hesitation and fear.
Half an hour earlier, she had received a text message from an unknown number, offering help against Deanna and asking her to come downstairs for details. The message ended with a note saying that Raphael had drunk spiked water and wouldn't wake up until dawn.
The thought that the person behind the message could drug Raphael without anyone noticing scared Emily into compliance. She didn't dare refuse.
Moreover, she harbored a secret hope. She wanted to see how this person planned to deal with Deanna. Especially after being jailed twice because of Deanna and having her marriage ruined by her, Emily felt less afraid of this mysterious person.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, she thought.
Gathering her courage, Emily approached the black sedan, opened the door, and got in.
Inside, she heard a voice altered by a voice changer, making it impossible to tell if it was male or female.
"I thought you wouldn't have the guts to get in."
"Why wouldn't I? Since your target is Deanna, we are friends," Emily replied, trying to sound calm. She looked around but couldn't discern the person's gender.
The person was very mysterious, wearing a hood and sitting in dim light, revealing nothing.
After sizing up the heavily disguised figure, Emily felt a pang of regret. This person clearly didn't want to reveal its identity, meaning she would be the one taking all the risks against Deanna. If things went south, she would bear all the blame without knowing who to turn to.
"Sir or Madam, since we're going to work together, shouldn't we be honest with each other? At least let me know who you are and whether you can help me," Emily probed.
Unbeknownst to her, the mysterious person had already seen through her intentions.
"Don't try to probe my identity; you're not qualified," the voice said, which felt like an insult to Emily.
Her face darkened instantly. She wanted to retort but felt an unprecedented sense of danger emanating from this person, making her hair stand on end as if death itself was watching her.
So, she swallowed her sarcastic remark and tightened her grip on her handbag.
"But since we're going to cooperate, I need to know if you can really handle Deanna. After all, Deanna has the Mercer family behind her!" She mentioned the Mercer family deliberately to provoke a reaction.
Unfortunately, while the plot played out as she expected, the dialogue did not.
"The Mercer family is nothing to fear," the mysterious person scoffed, showing no regard for the Mercers or Lance.
Emily was stunned. Before she could react, the mysterious person continued, "I know what you're worried about. Before coming to Espuenia, you must have investigated the international business conference. Do you think your husband had the qualifications to attend?"
No, Emily thought silently.
As if reading her mind, the mysterious person spoke again, "Your husband's invitation was sent by me. Now do you think I have the capability?"
Emily was speechless. The ability to get an invitation for such a prestigious event for someone from a third-rate family like the Howards was beyond doubt.
Realizing this, Emily stopped worrying about trivial matters. She looked at the mysterious person with burning eyes and asked, "So, what do I need to do?"
"Good. It seems you've accepted reality," the mysterious person said approvingly. "I've investigated your grudge with Deanna. I need you to use Deanna's mother's death to lure her into a room I specify. In return, I'll deal with the only witness to this matter."
Emily was shocked. She hadn't expected this person to have investigated her so thoroughly, even uncovering secrets she had tried hard to hide.
At that moment, she felt immensely relieved that this mysterious person was on her side.
