Deanna didn't know what Matteo was thinking.
She smiled gently and nodded, "We were lucky to recruit a few skilled employees."
"That's good, but our system contains important company information. It's not suitable for outsiders to check. If Miss Jones has any questions, she can ask our technical staff," Matteo politely declined Deanna's request.
Deanna was taken aback, not expecting his refusal, and didn't know how to respond. Lacking experience in this area, she looked to Lance for help.
Lance noticed her gaze and gave her a reassuring look before addressing Matteo indifferently, "It's just a security check; it won't involve your company's data. If you're concerned, you can have someone supervise."
"Well... alright," Matteo couldn't refuse Lance and had to compromise.
Hearing this, Lance signaled to the technical staff nearby.
The technician understood and stood up, asking, "Where is your company's tech department? Could Mr. Bryant arrange for someone to take me there?"
"Rudy, take him to the security department," Matteo instructed his secretary.
Just as he finished speaking, Lance's voice rang out again, "Remember to bring your head of security."
Matteo hesitated but nodded to his secretary, indicating to follow Lance's instructions.
A few minutes later, the secretary returned with a slightly overweight man.
"Mr. Bryant," the man greeted Matteo respectfully but couldn't help glancing around.
The reason was simple; the appearances of these two people were stunning, especially the man in a black suit exuding an extraordinary aura.
Matteo pretended not to notice his small actions and introduced, "This is Mr. Mercer from Mercer Group and Miss Jones from Vortex Technology. They have some questions about the system attack."
"Hello, Mr. Mercer. Hello, Miss Jones," the man greeted quickly after his initial surprise at seeing Lance and Deanna.
Deanna nodded and then looked at Lance as if asking if it was time to ask questions.
Lance responded with a look that said anytime was fine.
Seeing this, Deanna took the initiative to ask, "I want to know if the system's built-in alarm went off when it was attacked?"
"It didn't. If the alarm had gone off, we would have known immediately and could have stopped the hacker, preventing data leaks," the man answered truthfully.
Deanna frowned, "Logically, the system alarm should have gone off unless it was manually turned off."
"Miss Jones, are you suggesting our company deliberately turned off the alarm to frame you?" Matteo couldn't help but show displeasure despite fearing Lance's reaction.
Deanna hesitated and explained, "I didn't mean that. I'm just stating possible causes without drawing conclusions. We can only conclude after my staff finishes checking."
"I see. I must have misunderstood Miss Jones. I hope you don't mind," Matteo apologized with a smile but was far from calm inside.
He knew that any inspection would reveal irregularities. His eyes darkened as he thought of ways to extricate himself. Otherwise, his small company couldn't withstand Lance's wrath. Mia had really caused him trouble this time. Once this was over, he would demand compensation from her!
Half an hour later, the technician returned with a grim expression.
Deanna quickly asked, "How did the inspection go?"
"The system alarm was manually turned off. That's why it didn't react during the attack," the technician reported.
Deanna and Lance exchanged glances and then looked at Matteo.
Facing their questioning eyes, Matteo felt a sinking heart but maintained his composure as he explained, "I didn't know about this. I thought it was a system issue. Since Vortex Technology had no technical staff recently, I calculated the losses immediately after the incident and contacted Vortex Technology."
His explanation seemed reasonable but was full of flaws to Lance.
"Even if Vortex Technology had no technical staff at that time, didn't your company have any?" Lance questioned coldly.
Matteo was stumped. He paused for a few seconds before replying dryly, "I didn't think of that at the time."
Lance gave him a cold look, clearly not believing him but chose not to pursue it further. Instead, he said sternly, "Now that the truth is out, you know what to do next, right?"
