Chapter 439: The Narcissistic Mr. Mercer

Thinking of this, Samantha smiled at Gregory.

"Grannie didn't lie to you. It was indeed your mommy and Uncle Lance who asked me to take care of you. If you don't believe me, you can call your mommy."

After saying this, she didn't add anything more but couldn't help praising the little guy in front of her.

He truly was a Mercer family child, just as clever as his father was when he was young.

Gregory looked at Samantha's sincere expression and hesitated a bit. Could it be that he was overthinking?

Even so, he still wanted to ask his mommy.

"Then I'll call and ask."

He said this while taking out his smartwatch from his backpack.

The call connected quickly, but the voice on the other end wasn't his mommy's; it was Uncle Lance's.

"Uncle, why are you answering? Where's my mommy?"

"Your mommy is resting. What's up?"

Lance lowered his voice to ask. Perhaps she had hurt her head; shortly after lunch, Deanna had fallen asleep again.

Gregory pouted and said, "You and Mommy didn't come back last night. Usually, if Mommy goes out for something, she tells us. This time she didn't say anything, so I was worried and called to ask."

After saying this, he paused for a moment.

Without waiting for Lance to respond, he continued, "Uncle Lance, don't lie to me. Are you really with my mommy?"

"Of course, I'm with your mommy. If you don't believe me, I'll wake her up."

Saying this, Lance indeed called Deanna twice.

Deanna responded groggily and then fell back asleep.

Although the voice wasn't loud, Gregory heard it and finally felt relieved. He quickly said, "Okay, Uncle, don't wake Mommy. Let her rest well."

Lance agreed and then gave him a few reminders.

"Your mommy and I will be back in a couple of days. In the meantime, be good with Grannie, okay?"

"I understand."

Gregory nodded in agreement and then hung up the phone.

Seeing this, Samantha smiled warmly at him. "See? Grannie didn't lie to you."

Hearing this, Gregory felt a bit embarrassed for a moment.

But he was brave enough to admit his mistake.

"I'm sorry, Grannie. I shouldn't have doubted you."

"You silly child, there's no need to apologize. Grannie didn't blame you."

Looking at the little guy admitting his mistake in front of her, Samantha couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time.

She ruffled Gregory's hair and said with a smile, "Besides, being cautious is right."

Gregory nodded and then followed Samantha into the car.

Meanwhile, Lance had just hung up the phone when he saw Deanna rubbing her eyes and sitting up from the bed.

"Why are you awake?"

"You woke me up; now I can't sleep."

Deanna said this while recalling the voice she had just heard. She frowned slightly. "I think I heard Gregory's voice just now."

Seeing this, Lance nodded and smiled. "The little guy is sharp. I asked my mother to pick him up. He guessed that something might have happened to you and refused to go with her until he called to confirm your situation."

Hearing this made Deanna laugh with affection.

She shook her head and said, "He has been smart since he was little. I always wondered how I could have such an exceptionally clever child when I'm not that smart myself."

"That's definitely because of me."

Lance boasted without any humility. Deanna was taken aback by his narcissism.

After all, such self-praising words were not something she expected from Lance.

Seeing her reaction, Lance raised an eyebrow and asked teasingly, "What? Do you think I'm wrong?"

"... No, you're right."

Deanna shook her head but then suddenly remembered something that made her laugh uncontrollably.

Lance looked at her in confusion. "What are you laughing about?"

"It's nothing; it's just that what you said reminded me of Chloe."

As she spoke, the smile on Deanna's face grew even wider.

Lance looked even more puzzled. "What about Chloe?"

Hearing this question, Deanna stared at Lance for a few seconds.

Just as Lance was about to ask again in bewilderment, Deanna slowly said, "Chloe has been narcissistic since she was little. Now I finally know who she takes after-it's you."

Lance was left speechless.

Seeing this made Deanna laugh even harder.

But in the next second, her laughter turned into pain.

The reason was simple: she laughed too hard and pulled at her injuries, causing tears of pain to well up in her eyes.

Watching her gasp in pain made Lance feel both angry and amused.

After a while, Deanna felt better and remembered waking up once earlier in the morning and seeing Xavier.

Although last night's events were something she didn't want to think about, she couldn't ignore them either.

"So what happened to those people yesterday?" she turned to look at Lance as she asked.
