Deanna nodded and sat back on the bed.
The two little ones politely greeted Lance.
"Good afternoon, Uncle Lance."
"Good afternoon to you too," Lance responded with a smile, but there was a hint of helplessness in his eyes.
The reason was simple: although the two little ones greeted him, their tone and interaction were not as enthusiastic as before.
However, he wasn't worried for now.
He planned to show them through his actions that he wouldn't distance himself from them.
Deanna also noticed the unusual attitude of the two little ones towards Lance and looked over with curiosity and confusion.
Could something have happened between them while she was away?
She wanted to ask but knew it wasn't the right time.
Thinking of this, she looked up at Lance and asked, "Mr. Mercer, is there something you need?"
"Yes, there's something I need to ask you."
Lance glanced at the two little ones, hesitating slightly.
It wasn't a pleasant topic, and he didn't want to expose the children to it.
Seeing this, Deanna thought Lance had something important to say and considerately spoke up, "Gregory and Chloe, why don't you go keep Great-grandma company for a while?"
Chloe and Gregory pouted a bit in dissatisfaction but obediently nodded and left.
Soon, only Deanna and Lance were left in the room.
Deanna looked at the handsome man before her and smiled slightly. "Mr. Mercer, you can speak now."
"It's like this. Regarding your recent incident, I found out that someone was plotting against you. However, when I traced it further, I only found a foreign email address with no other information. So I wanted to ask if you have any enemies abroad."
Lance explained his purpose.
Deanna was quite surprised.
She had initially thought the incident was due to Ricky's greed for money. She hadn't expected there to be more to it.
She frowned and thought for a moment but couldn't think of anyone she had offended, especially abroad.
Lance noticed her hesitation and handed her a piece of paper with the email address on it. "Take a look at this email address and see if it reminds you of anything."
Deanna took the paper and saw an unfamiliar email address.
After a moment, she shook her head lightly. "I've never seen this email address before. Besides, I haven't been abroad for a long time. I can't think of anyone I might have offended there."
Lance wasn't surprised by her response.
"In that case, I'll have someone continue investigating this matter. If the person behind it targets you again, we'll eventually catch them."
"Thank you, Mr. Mercer."
Deanna didn't refuse Lance's help.
After all, she knew she couldn't investigate this on her own.
Moreover, she wanted to find out who was behind this as soon as possible to secure her and her family's safety.
Lance felt inexplicably pleased that Deanna didn't stand on ceremony with him regarding this matter.
Did this mean Deanna was gradually considering him one of her own?
Thinking of this, he noticed Deanna's still pale face and asked with concern, "By the way, how are you feeling? You don't look well. Do you need to see a doctor?"
"No need, I'm fine. I'll be better in a few days."
Deanna shook her head in refusal.
She knew her condition was due to the shock and emotional strain she had experienced, which had taken a toll on her body.
But Lance was still a bit worried.
Before he could say anything else, Deanna spoke again with a smile. "Did you forget? I'm a doctor myself."
Hearing this, Lance smiled but didn't insist further.
"Alright, I'll listen to you for now. But if your condition doesn't improve, you must go to the hospital."
"I know."
Deanna nodded with a smile, appreciating his concern.
Lance didn't stay much longer as he had some urgent matters at the company and left shortly after.
On his way back, he instructed Xavier, "Arrange for someone to continue investigating the email. We must find out who is behind Dr. Deanna's troubles!"
"Yes!"
Xavier nodded in agreement.
After seeing Lance off, Deanna thought about the sudden distance the two little ones had shown towards him and couldn't help but call them over to ask, "Gregory and Chloe, did you have a conflict with Mr. Mercer while I was away? Why do I feel like you don't seem to like him as much anymore?"
"Mommy, we didn't have a conflict with Uncle Lance. We just thought being too close to him might bother him. We're the most well-behaved kids; we wouldn't do such things."
Gregory answered in his childish voice while winking at his sister, signaling her not to tell their mommy.
Deanna didn't notice and asked doubtfully, "Really?"
"Of course it's true! Mommy doesn't believe us?"
Chloe hugged Deanna and acted cute.
Facing her soft and adorable daughter, Deanna couldn't think of anything else and hugged the little girl tightly.
