Chapter 27 The Unattainable One

Xavier was choking on his words. She was asking for an exorbitant price.

Just two packs of medicine for fifty thousand dollars? That was outrageous!

"There's no way traditional medicines cost fifty thousand dollars. Besides, didn't we agree to offset the car accident compensation? Why are we still transferring money?"

Xavier frowned at her, finding it unreasonable.

He suspected she saw Mr. Mercer's wealth and was trying to take advantage of them.

Deanna looked back at him confidently. "Ordinary herbs aren't worth much, but one of the ingredients in these is a rare medicinal herb. I only have three plants, and it's priceless! This herb is the key to curing Mr. Mercer's illness."

The herb she cultivated was indeed expensive.

Even when dealing with Old Hughes, it was priced the same.

She prided herself on being fair and honest, yet she was being doubted?

Recalling their previous agreement, she added, "The car accident compensation covers the treatment fee, but the medicine cost is extra. We agreed on this from the start."

She felt justified; they hadn't objected to the medicine cost at the time.

Xavier was about to accuse her of extortion when Lance's calm voice interrupted, "Pay her."

Since Mr. Mercer had no objections, Xavier resignedly took out his phone and transferred the money.

He couldn't resist mocking Deanna, "With the way you charge, you shouldn't be short of money. You must be quite wealthy."

Deanna didn't care about being called greedy and shrugged.

"Do you think I don't want to be? This is a rare herb. Do you know how hard it is to cultivate? If I had more, I wouldn't need to use the treatment fee to offset that one hundred thousand dollars."

She had spent a long time cultivating just these three plants.

She looked at Xavier displeasedly. "If you don't believe me, you can ask Old Hughes if my price is reasonable!"

Xavier wanted to say more but stopped when he saw Lance's signal.

Calmly pocketing the money, Deanna began to usher them out.

"Alright, that's all for today. You can leave now. And next time, please call before you come. Don't make such a big scene; you'll scare my family and neighbors. They might think I'm dealing with loan sharks."

She rolled her eyes. Lance wasn't angry; instead, he found her somewhat endearing.

"Goodbye," Lance said as he left with his men.

Before leaving, he gently bid farewell to Gregory and Chloe, "See you next time, little ones."

"Goodbye, Uncle," they replied politely.

Chloe's eyes sparkled with joy; she liked this uncle very much.

She told herself they would meet again.

Deanna collapsed tiredly on the sofa. This treatment had drained her energy; she was exhausted.

Gregory thoughtfully poured her a glass of water and handed it to her, reminding her, "Mommy, rest for a while. I'll make lunch."

Chloe also came over to massage her legs.

With her children being so considerate, Deanna felt much better.

"Good kids," she said, patting their heads.

However, she couldn't rest just yet; she needed to tend to the herb garden.

"Chloe, Mommy needs to go to the herb garden. Don't run around."

She bent down to instruct her daughter.

Chloe looked at her with innocent and obedient eyes and nodded lightly.

Deanna then called out to Gregory, who was putting on a small apron, ready to prepare lunch in the kitchen.

"Gregory, wait a moment. Be careful when using the gas stove; don't hurt yourself!"

She reminded him for the umpteenth time. Although her son was reliable and premature, he was still young.

"Don't worry, Mommy," Gregory responded obediently. It wasn't his first time cooking.

But Mommy always reminded him carefully each time.

He knew she was just concerned about their safety.

He would take good care of himself and his sister so that Mommy wouldn't worry.

Lance left Deanna's house and headed straight for the airport.

He had a lot of work to do and no time to rest.

"Mr. Mercer, please take care of your health and don't overwork yourself," Xavier said worriedly, recalling Miss Jones's advice.

He feared that if Mr. Mercer overexerted himself, his old illness might relapse.

Although Miss Jones's medicine was effective, Mr. Mercer could not receive timely treatment when being abroad.

"I'm fine. Miss Jones's treatment is very effective! After she administered the acupuncture, my chest pain disappeared immediately."

He was pleased that his body seemed to respond well to the treatment and might fully recover.

Xavier was excited upon hearing this. "It seems she really knows her stuff."

He had once doubted her medical skills but now realized he had underestimated her.

Lance chuckled, not surprised.

"If she weren't skilled, she wouldn't be so confident."

Thinking about their first encounter and her usual demeanor, he spoke with interest while looking back at the old residential area.

"It's intriguing that such a place hides someone we've searched for so long but couldn't find."
