Chapter 61
"Suspicions began after the attack on the coming-of-age ceremony," Nathaniel replied, meeting his Alpha's gaze steadily. "Marcus's behaviour had been... concerning... for months before that. Secretive meetings, unexplained absences, changes to patrol schedules that made no tactical sense."
Alpha Darkwood's expression darkened as he continued examining the documents. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's cautious hope; the Alpha was taking the evidence seriously, not dismissing it outright as they had feared he might.
"These meeting locations," Alpha Darkwood said, tapping a particular page. "The human research facility to the west. I was told it was abandoned years ago."
"It was reactivated secretly," Nickolas explained. "We have surveillance confirmation of Forest Mountain warriors meeting with military personnel there tonight, while Marcus attended the ceremonial sealing."
The Alpha's head snapped up, his eyes flashing with genuine surprise. "Tonight? You have visual evidence of this?"
Ioannis nodded, withdrawing a small device from her ceremonial garments. "Encrypted images taken by our scouts less than two hours ago. Three of Marcus's elite enforcers are exchanging information with human military officials."
Alpha Darkwood accepted the device, his weathered fingers navigating the interface with unexpected deftness. His expression grew increasingly grim as he studied the images.
"I recognise them," he said finally, his voice low with controlled fury. "My own warriors, acting without sanction." He looked up, his dark eyes meeting theirs with new intensity. "How long until Marcus returns from the ceremonial sealing?"
"Less than an hour," Nathaniel replied. "Perhaps less if he senses something amiss."
The Alpha rose from his desk, his powerful frame suddenly radiating the authority that had maintained Forest Mountain's strength for decades. "Then we have little time. Nathaniel, summon the loyal members of my Beta Council immediately. Secure the perimeter against Marcus's return, but discreetly. I want him unaware until I confront him directly."
Nathaniel bowed deeply before departing, his movements swift and purposeful. Alpha Darkwood turned back to Ioannis and Nickolas, studying them with new consideration.
"You took an extraordinary risk coming here," he observed. "If I had dismissed your evidence, you would not have left this territory alive."
"The risk to all packs if we remained silent was greater," Nickolas replied simply.
Alpha Darkwood nodded slowly, something like respect flickering in his dark eyes. "Your fathers raised you well." He gestured to the documents spread across his desk. "This betrayal goes beyond anything I imagined possible. Marcus has been my enforcer for fifteen years, my blood kin for his entire life."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's sympathy mingling with strategic calculation. Alpha Darkwood's personal relationship with Marcus complicated matters, but his evident anger suggested he placed pack loyalty above personal relationships. This might be the leverage they needed to ensure Marcus faced proper justice.
"What will you do?" Ioannis asked carefully, maintaining the formal posture protocol demanded.
Alpha Darkwood gathered the documents with deliberate care, his weathered hands moving with surprising gentleness over the damning evidence. "What pack law requires," he replied, his voice carrying the weight of generations of leadership. "Marcus will face formal judgment before the pack council. If these documents prove authentic—and I have little doubt they will, the penalty for such betrayal is clear."
The unspoken sentence hung in the air between them. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's grim acknowledgment; death was the only punishment for treason of this magnitude.
"And the challenge?" Nickolas asked.
"Will be withdrawn," Alpha Darkwood stated firmly. "Forest Mountain does not sanction Marcus's actions. Once he is dealt with according to pack law, I will offer a formal apology to both your packs and the Council." His eyes hardened. "But first, I must secure my territory against those who have betrayed it."
A soft knock at the study door interrupted them. Nathaniel entered, his expression tense but controlled.
"The loyal Beta Council members have been summoned discreetly, Alpha. They await your command in the ceremonial chamber." He hesitated before adding, "We've received word that Marcus is concluding the sealing ceremony ahead of schedule. He appears...agitated."
Alpha Darkwood's expression darkened. "He suspects something." He turned to Ioannis and Nickolas. "You must leave immediately. Your presence here when Marcus returns would trigger confrontation before I'm prepared to address his betrayal formally."
"With respect, Alpha," Nickolas countered, his voice steady despite the tension Ioannis could feel flowing through their bond, "our departure now could alert him further. If he's already suspicious, seeing Storm Strider and Eternal Eclipse representatives leaving Forest Mountain territory would confirm his fears."
The Alpha studied Nickolas thoughtfully, reassessing the younger wolf. "A valid strategic point. What do you suggest?"
"Allow us to remain as formal witnesses," Ioannis proposed, the artistic patterns of protocol and ceremony clear in her mind. "Ancient law permits neighbouring territories to observe judgment when treason affects multiple packs."
Alpha Darkwood's eyebrows rose slightly. "You know our ancient laws well, Luna Harvey."
"My mother ensured I studied diplomatic protocols extensively," Ioannis replied with appropriate modesty. "Including those governing inter-pack accusations."
The Alpha nodded slowly, decision crystallising in his dark eyes. "You will remain as formal witnesses, but concealed until I have confronted Marcus directly. Once a formal accusation has been made before my Beta Council, you will be revealed as the bearers of evidence."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's tactical mind analysing this approach; it maintained protocol while reducing their immediate risk, though it would place them at the centre of Forest Mountain territory when confrontation occurred.
"Understood," Nickolas agreed, his hand finding Ioannis's in a brief gesture of solidarity. "Where would you have us wait?"
"The observation alcove," Nathaniel suggested, gesturing toward an ornately carved panel in the wall that Ioannis had assumed was merely decorative. "Ancient Alphas used it to witness council proceedings unseen when necessary."
Alpha Darkwood nodded his approval. "A fitting location. The ceremonial chamber was designed with such strategic considerations in mind." He turned to Nathaniel. "Ensure they are comfortably situated, then join me with the Beta Council. We must be prepared when Marcus arrives."
