Chapter 60
Nathaniel unlocked the ancient door with a soft click that seemed unnaturally loud in the confined space. The spiral staircase beyond was lit by traditional oil lamps, casting flickering shadows that danced across the stone walls as they ascended. With each step, Ioannis felt the weight of their mission pressing more heavily upon her shoulders. The dual pendants seemed to grow warmer against her skin, as if responding to their proximity to Forest Mountain's heart.
At the top of the stairs, Nathaniel paused, turning to face them with an expression of grave seriousness. "Once I announce you, there can be no retreat. Are you certain you wish to proceed?"
"We're certain," Ioannis replied without hesitation, the sealed pouch of documents hidden safely within her ceremonial garments. Through their bond, Nickolas's absolute conviction mirrored her own, his tactical mind already prepared for whatever awaited them beyond that door.
Nathaniel nodded once, drawing himself up to his full height before opening the heavy wooden door. Beyond lay Alpha Darkwood's private study, a vast circular chamber lined with ancient texts and illuminated by dozens of oil lamps. The Alpha himself sat at a massive desk of polished blackwood, his silver-streaked dark hair falling loose around powerful shoulders as he bent over yellowed scrolls with his historian.
Both wolves looked up sharply as Nathaniel entered, their conversation cutting off mid-sentence.
"Beta Nathaniel," Alpha Darkwood greeted, his deep voice carrying both authority and confusion. "This is unexpected. I gave orders not to be disturbed while Marcus attends to the ceremonial sealing."
"Forgive the interruption, Alpha," Nathaniel replied with a formal bow. "A matter of grave urgency requires your immediate attention. I present Alpha Heir Nickolas Harvey of Storm Striders Pack and Luna Ioannis Harvey, mate of Alpha Heir Nickolas, daughter of Eternal Eclipse Pack’s Alpha, here under ancient protocol to bring formal accusation."
Alpha Darkwood's eyes narrowed, his powerful frame tensing as he rose from his seat. Unlike Marcus, whose physical presence was deliberately intimidating, Alpha Darkwood carried his authority with quiet dignity. His dark eyes, shrewd and assessing, moved from Nathaniel to the unexpected visitors.
"Formal accusation?" he repeated, his tone carefully neutral. "Against whom?"
"Against your enforcer, Marcus Thorne," Nickolas stated clearly, stepping forward with Ioannis beside him. "For conspiracy against all nine major packs, secret collusion with human military forces, and treason against werewolf kind."
A heavy silence fell over the study. The historian—an elderly wolf with white-streaked grey hair, let out a soft gasp before Alpha Darkwood silenced him with a slight gesture.
"These are extraordinary claims," the Alpha said finally, his expression unreadable. "I assume you bring extraordinary evidence to support them."
"We do," Ioannis replied, stepping forward with the sealed pouch. "Documents written in Marcus's own hand, in the pre-unification Forest Mountain dialect. Detailed records of his communications with human military officials, his plans for werewolf subjugation, and the names of his informants within all nine packs."
Alpha Darkwood's eyes flashed with something, surprise, anger, or disbelief, Ioannis couldn't tell. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's heightened alertness, his body subtly shifting to a more protective stance beside her.
"The pre-unification dialect," the Alpha repeated, his gaze shifting to his historian. "Few outside our most ancient bloodlines can read it."
"We brought a verified translation," Nickolas added, producing a second document from within his ceremonial garments. "Though we know you can read them for yourself as an Alpha of your line, you should have a required understanding of languages passed down through the Alpha bloodline.”
Alpha Darkwood studied them for a long moment, his weathered face revealing nothing. Through their bond, Ioannis could feel Nickolas's tension, a coiled readiness beneath his calm exterior. The study remained deathly quiet save for the soft crackling of oil lamps.
"You understand what you're doing," Alpha Darkwood said finally, his voice low and measured. "Coming here, to my territory, accusing my enforcer, my blood kin, of treason."
"We do," Nickolas replied, standing firm beside Ioannis. "We would not bring these accusations without irrefutable evidence."
Alpha Darkwood gestured to the elderly historian. "Leave us, Elder. What follows must be witnessed only by those directly involved."
The historian bowed deeply before shuffling toward a side door, his curious gaze lingering on Ioannis and Nickolas until he disappeared from view. The Alpha waited until the door closed behind him before speaking again.
"Present your evidence," he commanded, extending a hand.
Ioannis stepped forward, offering the sealed pouch with the formal gesture of accusation, right arm extended, left hand at her heart. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's approval of her perfect adherence to ancient protocol.
Alpha Darkwood accepted the documents with equal formality before breaking the seal. His expression remained impassive as he unfolded the first page, his eyes moving rapidly across the intricate script. Only a slight tightening around his mouth betrayed any reaction.
"This is indeed Marcus's hand," he acknowledged after examining several pages. "And the dialect is one few outside our bloodline can read, much less write."
He looked up, his dark eyes boring into them. "You claim he conspires with human military. For what purpose?"
"Control," Nickolas answered. "He's promised them access to werewolf genetics, abilities, and pack territories in exchange for power and protection for himself and chosen followers."
"The documents detail plans for containment facilities," Ioannis added, the memory of Sera's words sending a chill through her. "Specialised restraints designed for our kind. Testing programs. Breeding protocols."
Alpha Darkwood's nostrils flared, the first visible sign of his anger. He returned to the documents, turning pages with increasing speed, his breathing growing more controlled with each revelation.
"These names," he said eventually, his finger resting on a particular page. "He claims these pack members have agreed to serve as informants after the... transition."
"Traitors in every pack," Nickolas confirmed. "Including yours."
Alpha Darkwood's eyes flashed dangerously. "Including my own Beta Council."
Nathaniel stepped forward, his posture formal but resolute. "Not all of us, Alpha. Some of us remained loyal to you and the pack law, which is why we facilitated this meeting."
The Alpha studied his Beta with new awareness. "How long have you known of this, Nathaniel?"
