Chapter 45 The Freeloading, Shameless Fellows
Chapter 45 The Freeloading, Shameless Fellows
Evelyn's voice dripped with sarcasm. Gabriel's classmates immediately jumped up, angrily pointing at Evelyn, "You fat pig, what did you say?"
Before he could finish, Gabriel and Christopher slammed the table and stood up, blocking Evelyn and shouting, "What did YOU say?"
Owen was a step too late and couldn't get close to Evelyn, so he could only point at the leader and shout, "Who are you calling a fat pig?"
The leader said without hesitation, "I'm calling her a fat pig."
"Oh~~" Owen sneered, "So the fat pig is insulting my boss. Fat pig, I suggest you get lost, or you won't even know how you died."
"You!"
Gabriel's classmate was too angry to speak, and the commotion attracted not only other diners in the restaurant but also others from their group.
"What's going on here?" A vigorous middle-aged man walked over.
Gabriel immediately spoke respectfully when he saw him, "Coach Woods?"
Coach Woods was startled and smiled awkwardly, "Gabriel, you're here too. I thought you had something going on today and couldn't make it to our gathering."
Evelyn glanced at the several boys following behind him, plus the four troublemakers and Gabriel - exactly the number for a football team.
Her face darkened. She was now pretty sure Jenny hadn't deliberately lied to her - Gabriel really was being isolated, and the perpetrators weren't just his teammates, but this coach too.
Evelyn could tell Owen quickly figured it out too, and immediately spoke up, "What are you talking about? Gabriel had nothing going on today, otherwise why would we come to this restaurant for lunch? You didn't invite him to your team dinner?"
After he finished, most of the football team members, including Coach Woods, looked embarrassed, while the rest showed disdain, "Someone with his background doesn't deserve to eat here."
"Hey, you fat pig—" Owen was about to explode, but Coach Woods awkwardly interrupted with a laugh, "Misunderstanding, it's all a misunderstanding."
He held back the equally defiant team member while smiling at Gabriel and the others, "Max said today he wanted to treat everyone to a meal, and also said Gabriel wasn't coming, which led to this misunderstanding. Now that it's cleared up, that's good. Since Gabriel is here, come join us at our table. I'll have the waiter add a few chairs. You're Gabriel's friends, right? Come join us too."
After speaking, he put his arm around the leader named Max, whispering something in his ear while leading him to the private room.
Owen wanted to say "who cares," but when he turned around and saw Evelyn had already gotten up and walked over, he quickly followed.
With the four of them added, the table suddenly became crowded, especially since Evelyn was large and took up almost two seats by herself.
The group led by Max Davis was already unhappy about sharing a table with them, and now they became even more sarcastic: "That's Gabriel for you - crashing someone else's free party and bringing four extra mouths to feed."
"Max, it's not easy for him. His parents are servants, and normally he can only eat the leftovers from his employers. How could he afford the fancy food you're treating us to?"
"Tsk, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him. Look, he even brought all his poor relatives and poor friends along."
"Bang!" Owen slammed the table hard, about to lose his temper, but Christopher beside him held him down.
"Little Owen." Christopher leaned close to Owen's ear and said meaningfully, "We rarely get to eat this kind of free fancy food. Shouldn't we take the chance to eat more?"
Owen paused, then smiled coldly.
Next, these two acted like they had motors in their mouths. As soon as the waiter brought out dishes, they swooped in like leeches with their forks and cleared everything.
At this gathering, besides the individual steak or pasta each person ordered, other shared dishes like salads and bacon were barely tasted by anyone except Evelyn's group of four.
Even so, Owen and Christopher still slammed the table and complained loudly: "How is this so little food? Who can this even feed? Hey, fat pig, you're too cheap. Who treats people and only orders this much food?"
"I'm not a fat pig!" Max clenched his fists, furious but unable to make a scene because of his pride. He could only say through gritted teeth, "Order then! Order whatever you want!"
As soon as he said this, Owen immediately waved his arms and called the waiter: "Waiter, waiter, quick, bring us one of everything on the menu."
"Bang!" Max almost fainted from anger.
His classmate beside him steadied him, having the waiter clean up the broken glass on the floor while consoling him: "Max, these poor people have never had good food. Just consider it bad luck."
Others chimed in, "I'd say they haven't just never had good food - it's like they've never eaten at all. I can't believe I have to eat at the same table with them. How embarrassing."
"They probably do eat, but it all probably goes to Gabriel's fat sister. Otherwise how could she have so much meat on her? Haha—"
Owen and the other two didn't react no matter how much they mocked them, but mentioning Evelyn was crossing the line.
The three immediately slammed the table and stood up again, and the coach once more tried to smooth things over.
Just then, a waiter carrying a bottle of red wine walked up to Owen: "Mr. Owen, the dishes you requested have been arranged. This is the oldest wine in our restaurant, nearly a hundred years old. Normally only VIP guests can order it. Would you like me to open it now?"
"Yeah, open it." Owen replied casually.
But as soon as the words left his mouth, Max jumped out of his chair in alarm, "Are you crazy?"
He glared at Owen, then noticing everyone's eyes on him, tried hard to control his emotions and said to the waiter: "I didn't order this wine. You brought it to the wrong person."
"But—"
"I don't care. I didn't order it anyway. Even if you open it, I won't pay for it!"
Although this restaurant was located near the school, it was actually a global chain of high-end Michelin restaurants with extremely expensive prices. Max could only afford to treat everyone here and show off because he had received a large allowance as a new student. The dishes Owen ordered today had already exceeded his budget - how could he possibly afford wine?
Moreover, what did the waiter just say - a hundred-year-old wine, the best wine in the restaurant that only VIPs could order? Forget about him - even his father might not be able to afford it.
Face was certainly important, but at this moment he could only bite the bullet and refuse. Surely his classmates would understand - no matter how embarrassing this was, it couldn't be more shameful than Gabriel and his four friends freeloading and being so shameless.
But who would have thought that as soon as he finished speaking, Owen burst out laughing.
"What are you afraid of?" He lazily leaned back in his chair and pulled out a black card from his pocket. "Open this bottle of wine. Today's meal is on me."
