Chapter 29 Jealous of Her to the Point of Madness
Chapter 29 Jealous of Her to the Point of Madness
Christopher had nightmares all night, dreaming that his computer was hacked. He desperately tried to pull out the power cord, but the screen never changed.
He woke up with his sheets soaked in sweat.
After taking a shower, he slowly walked toward the duty room with a can of beer, but all the colleagues he passed on the way looked at him strangely.
"Did I not rinse off all the soap?" Christopher muttered, rubbing his hair. Just as he stepped into the duty room, Nicholas rushed up to him with a panicked expression. Watching him open his mouth, but unable to say anything in the end, Nicholas sighed and said, "You'd better go take a look."
Christopher's heart tightened. He quickly scanned the duty room and finally walked toward the computer surrounded by a crowd.
"Excuse me, excuse me." He pushed through the crowd to get to the computer. Only when he saw what was on the screen did the beer in his hand instantly drop to the floor.
The beer bottle shattered on the ground. The people around immediately cried out and moved away, muttering complaints. Only Christopher stood motionless, staring blankly at the screen, as if his whole body had frozen.
On the screen was a nude photo of him.
"This morning all the computers at the base were hacked, showing this photo of you. The other computers could close the photo, and nothing else was found wrong with them. But the one you used yesterday—no matter what we do, we can't close it." Nicholas patted Christopher's shoulder sympathetically and briefly explained the morning's situation.
A colleague nearby mocked, "We tried Christopher's method of pulling the power cord too. When we turned it back on, it was still like this."
Christopher didn't bother with him. After taking a deep breath, he started typing on the keyboard.
Unfortunately, the result was exactly as Nicholas said. No matter what code he entered, the nude photo on the screen remained unmoved.
"Forget it, let's request support from headquarters' technical center." Nicholas patted Christopher's shoulder.
Christopher also slumped back in his chair in defeat. After a few seconds, a thought suddenly flashed through his mind.
He quickly lunged at the screen and typed in the string of code he had entered yesterday when trying to hack into Evelyn's phone.
He hit enter, and the screen actually flickered. Then a line of bright red text appeared:
"Final warning."
The next second, the red text disappeared and the computer returned to normal, as if nothing had happened.
Christopher's forehead was covered in cold sweat, and his fingers trembled slightly beyond his control.
"I told you not to mess around—" Nicholas couldn't help but speak when he saw his reaction, but before he could finish, Christopher had already rushed out.
The news that the Department of Defense computers had been collectively hacked quickly spread throughout the entire department. Christopher, who had been called a genius since joining and had always been so arrogant as to be somewhat dismissive of others, once again became the department's laughingstock.
This news had long reached Edward's ears, but as the department head, and with Christopher being his capable subordinate, it was really difficult to handle.
At this moment, he looked at the application on his desk, then at Christopher standing in front of his desk with a stubborn expression, and sighed helplessly, "You really must go?"
Christopher nodded seriously, "If I don't go to California to meet whoever's behind this, I'll never rest in peace."
He was completely determined. Edward couldn't persuade him further and raised his hand to approve his leave request.
But before handing it to him, he warned him once more with a serious expression, "I still have to remind you, be careful with your words and actions, and don't do anything out of line. Don't ruin your own future over this—you'll regret it deeply."
At the Ashford family villa in California, the lights stayed on all night.
Jenny had fallen into the water and developed a high fever. She was waiting for her father to come home so she could complain to him and have him properly deal with Evelyn's family. But Victor never returned.
It wasn't until morning, when her mother was on the phone, that she heard the news that Victor had been detained.
"How could father not be able to come home?" Jenny anxiously circled around her mother, but her mother had no time for her right now. She frantically hung up the phone, stuffed all the documents and cash into her bag, and hurried out to pull strings for Victor.
Before leaving, she only had time to leave Austin and his sister one sentence, "Stay home quietly for a while and don't go out causing trouble."
Jenny cried and chased after her mother, wanting to ask more, but could only watch her get in the car and leave in a hurry.
The next second, her phone rang.
"Jenny, why has your card been frozen?" Her friend Summer asked urgently on the other end.
To win over her friends and show off her family's wealth, Jenny would often give them designer bags and jewelry, and even give credit cards to those she was close with. Her friends were therefore very obedient to her.
"How could my card be frozen? Obviously that store's machine is broken, you idiot!" Jenny was already irritated and hung up after speaking.
But the phone immediately rang again.
Jenny answered without looking and yelled at the person on the phone, "If it won't work at that store, just try another one. Did a pig eat your brain?"
The other end was silent for a few seconds, then came the voice of her other friend, "Okay, okay, I'll try another store right now, but Jenny, how did you know the card wouldn't work?"
Jenny froze, and then calls and messages came flooding in.
All from friends she had given credit cards to.
"All our cards have been frozen. There must be a problem with father's account. Turn off your phone for now." Austin passed by her, sighed, and returned to his room looking dejected.
Jenny stared blankly at her phone, tears falling in big drops. Just then, an arrogant sports car roar sounded outside the door.
Owen stopped a high-end sports car outside the villa.
Jenny quickly ran downstairs, only to see Owen personally get out of the car to open the door for Evelyn, with a flattering smile on his face.
"Vroom~~" The sports car roared again and quickly disappeared from their view.
Jenny only managed to breathe in a mouthful of exhaust fumes, choking until tears streamed down her face.
"Evelyn!" She was jealous to the point of madness, but could only watch the sports car through gritted teeth, helpless.
After a long while, she suddenly turned to look toward the garage, a hint of madness showing in her eyes.
California High School had been very lively recently, with almost everyone discussing Evelyn. Not to mention all the rumors circulating online and the news of her winning the Molly Cup competition championship—just the fact that she came to school this morning in Owen's sports car was enough to make everyone jealous.
Moreover, many wealthy students at school hadn't been coming recently. There were rumors that their parents seemed to have gotten into trouble, apparently related to Evelyn's disruption at the governor's office that day. It was unclear whether it was tax issues or related to bribing officials.
So not only Evelyn's grade, but even Gabriel's class was discussing this recent celebrity figure. Quite a few who were close to Gabriel couldn't help but ask him about his sister and the rumors at school.
Gabriel focused intently on his textbook and ignored them.
He had always been quite aloof toward people he wasn't familiar with. The others weren't offended and were even somewhat eager to curry favor with him.
However, some people didn't like him. Seeing their classmates being so nice to this poor guy they used to look down on, they felt very uncomfortable.
A boy who had a crush on Jenny couldn't hold back and mocked loudly, "I heard some high officials have perverted tastes. His sister is so fat and ugly, who knows what kind of deals she made with those old men in private—"
Before he could finish, Gabriel's fist had already landed on his face.
