Shift in the Air

Shift in the Air
Reyna’s POV

I was walking through the palace gardens, trying to clear my head. The sun was setting, casting a soft orange glow over the flowers. The air smelled like fresh earth and roses. I wasn’t sure where I was going; I just needed to be somewhere quiet, away from everything.

As I rounded a corner, I froze.

Lucian.

He was standing by the stone bench, his arms crossed, looking at the ground. I had seen him like this before—always distant, always with that hard look in his eyes. I took a deep breath and tried to keep my calm, but it was hard. After the way we’d left things last time, I didn’t know what to expect.

Lucian didn’t seem to notice me right away. I thought about turning and walking away, but something made me stay. I was curious, or maybe just... tired of the distance.

He finally looked up when I was a few steps away. His eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, there was something there—something different. It wasn’t the usual coldness, not the usual anger. Just... quiet.

I opened my mouth, ready to say something, but Lucian beat me to it.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said, his voice low, but not harsh. It wasn’t an accusation. It was more like an observation. It felt strange to hear him speak without that sharp edge, almost like he was trying to talk to me like a normal person.

“I... I’ve been busy,” I said, trying to sound casual, but I could tell my voice was a little too shaky. I wasn’t used to this side of him. I didn’t know what to make of it.

He nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he was studying me. “I get it,” he said, almost to himself, as if the words were meant for him more than for me. “It’s not easy, being here.”

I frowned. I knew what he meant. It hadn’t been easy for me, either. But I wasn’t sure I wanted to talk about it with him. Not yet.

Instead of replying, I just took a few steps closer, trying to think of something else to say. Something that wouldn’t make this whole situation even more awkward. But when I looked up at him, I saw it—the softest shift in his face. A tiny crack in the armor he always wore.

“Look, Reyna,” Lucian started, and his voice was rough, like he wasn’t sure whether he should say it or not. “I know I’ve been... hard on you. It’s just... I don’t know how else to be.” He rubbed the back of his neck, looking away like he didn’t want to make eye contact.

I didn’t know what to say. I’d always seen Lucian as someone unapproachable, someone with walls so thick that nothing could get through. But now, he was opening up. Just a little. And it was... surprising.

“I get that it’s hard for you,” I said quietly. “You’ve got a lot on your shoulders. I can see that.”

Lucian’s eyes flicked to mine, his expression softening just a fraction. It was barely noticeable, but I saw it. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “But that doesn’t make it right. I don’t... I don’t know how to trust people anymore.”

I felt a small pang in my chest. His words were heavy, like they carried more weight than he was letting on. He was speaking about something deeper, something that went beyond just me.

“You don’t have to trust me,” I said, my voice gentle. “But maybe you can let me help. I’m not going to judge you, Lucian.”

For a moment, there was silence between us. The kind of silence that felt thick, like something was hanging in the air, waiting to be said. I wasn’t sure if it was my words that had made a difference or if he just needed someone to listen, but Lucian didn’t look away. He didn’t push me away. He just stood there, still, his jaw tight but not as tense as before.

“I... I’ll think about it,” he said, his voice quiet and almost uncertain. It wasn’t much, but it felt like a crack in his wall. I didn’t expect him to open up all the way, not yet. But this was something. It was a start.

I gave him a small nod, not knowing what else to say. I wasn’t sure if I could help him, but maybe this was the first step.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm the fluttering in my chest. “Well... I should go. Draven might be looking for me.”

Lucian gave a slight nod in return, his eyes following me as I started to walk away. I didn’t look back, but I could feel his gaze on me, and for the first time, I didn’t feel like I was just some outsider in his world.

As I walked back to the main palace, my heart felt a little lighter. Maybe it wasn’t much, but Lucian had said something real. He had let me in, just a little. And that was more than I’d ever expected from him.

The air felt a little warmer, the garden a little brighter. And I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the start of something different.

As I walked through the palace grounds, the sun was setting, casting a soft, golden glow over everything. The flowers in the garden seemed to come alive in the fading light, their colors rich and deep, as if they were holding secrets of their own. The air smelled faintly of jasmine and earth, a scent that was both comforting and grounding. But as much as I tried to focus on the beauty around me, my mind kept drifting back to Lucian. I wasn’t sure what to make of him anymore. One moment, he was distant, cold, and harsh; the next, he was almost... human. The way he had opened up to me, even just a little, had thrown me off. I didn’t know if he was trying to change or if he was just too tired of keeping up the walls. I didn’t expect him to become my friend, or to even trust me completely. But I couldn’t ignore the fact that something between us had shifted. Maybe it was just a crack in his armor, something small, but it was there. And for some reason, that made me want to be there for him more than I had before. I couldn’t explain it. Maybe it was the way he looked at me when he spoke, as if he wasn’t just seeing the outsider, the weak human. Maybe it was the vulnerability in his voice when he admitted he didn’t know how to trust anyone anymore. He wasn’t so different from me, after all. He had his own wounds, his own fears. And somehow, I couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, if I stayed, if I tried, I could help him heal, just like I was trying to heal myself. But as I walked past the grand arches of the palace and towards the familiar entrance, I realized that maybe I wasn’t the only one who needed to find a way to trust. Lucian had his own battles to face, just as I had mine. And while I didn’t know where it would lead, I knew that the path ahead would be different than I had expected. The uncertainty lingered in the air around me, but for once, it didn’t feel so heavy. It felt like a chance.
