The Fire between us
The Fire between us
Reyna’s POV
The afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows of the palace, casting a warm golden glow on everything. I stood by the garden’s entrance, my fingers gripping the cold metal of the doorframe as I stared outside. The world seemed so far away, so out of reach. The flowers in the garden were swaying in the gentle breeze, but I felt like I was frozen, caught in the thick tension between Draven and me.
I had just had enough of the silence. Enough of the hurt. Enough of the doubt. Every time I tried to be close to him, Lucian's words echoed in my mind, telling me I didn’t belong. And no matter how much Draven tried to convince me otherwise, I still wasn’t sure.
I turned and walked into the hallway, my heels clicking softly against the stone floor. The sound was sharp, and it made me feel more alone than ever. I didn’t even know where I was going—just away. I needed to clear my head, but the weight on my chest wouldn’t let me.
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him.
Draven was standing there, tall and strong, like a storm waiting to break. His black hair fell around his sharp face, a few strands loose from the tie. His jaw was set, and his eyes, the color of dark, stormy skies, were locked onto me. There was something about his presence that both calmed and ignited a fire inside me, but today it only made my heart race in frustration.
I didn’t want to talk to him, but I couldn’t ignore the pull I felt when I looked at him. My lips parted, and I almost said something, but he spoke first.
“Reyna, we need to talk,” he said, his voice deep, almost a growl, but his eyes softened as he took a step closer.
I didn’t move. I wasn’t ready for another round of “everything’s going to be fine.” Not today. Not when Lucian’s words were still fresh in my mind, cutting deeper every time I thought about them.
“I don’t know if I can believe you,” I whispered before I could stop myself. My words felt like a confession—like I was betraying something I wanted to believe in.
Draven’s brows furrowed, his eyes flashing with something between anger and concern. “What are you talking about? What’s going on in that head of yours?”
I could feel the heat rising in my chest, the frustration that had been building for days spilling over. “You don’t understand,” I said, my voice trembling but strong. “I’m not like you, Draven. I don’t belong here. I’m just… I’m just a human, and Lucian’s right. You’re only protecting me because you feel like you have to. Because I’m weak.”
Draven’s expression shifted, his lips tightening into a firm line. He took a step forward, closing the space between us. “You’re not weak,” he said, his voice low and rough. “And I’m not protecting you because I have to. I’m doing it because I want to. Because I care about you, Reyna.”
I shook my head, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall. “But I’m not one of you. I can’t just fit into this world, Draven. I’m always going to be different.”
The words I said stung, even as I said them. But I couldn’t help it. The doubt was too loud, too real.
Draven’s eyes darkened, his jaw clenching. He stepped even closer, his chest nearly touching mine now. The air between us felt thick, crackling with energy. “Don’t you dare say that,” he said, his voice low and intense. “You are everything I want. Don’t you see that? I don’t care if you’re human. I don’t care about the differences between us. All I care about is you.”
My breath caught in my throat. His words hit me like a wave, and for a moment, I felt a flicker of hope, of something real. But it was quickly smothered by the ache of my own insecurities.
“I don’t know if I can believe that,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Before I could pull away, Draven’s hand shot out, cupping my cheek with a tenderness I wasn’t expecting. His touch was warm, like fire against my skin, but I didn’t pull away. I couldn’t. His thumb stroked my cheek gently, sending a shiver through me.
“Reyna,” he murmured, his voice soft but powerful. “You’re not just some human. You’re everything to me. You’re my choice. And I’m not letting you go.”
I didn’t know what came over me then. The words we were saying, the pain, the hope—it all mixed together and burst inside me like a wildfire. Without thinking, I stepped closer to him, my hands finding his chest, pushing against the firm muscle there.
“Don’t lie to me,” I said, my voice shaking with emotion. “Don’t tell me that you love me when you don’t even understand who I really am.”
I was close to breaking. Close to running away. But he didn’t let me. His hands gripped my waist, pulling me to him in an instant. And then, before I could even process what was happening, his lips were on mine.
It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t slow. It was all fire and need, a storm crashing against my resolve. His mouth was fierce, demanding, and I melted into him. All the doubt, all the fear—it disappeared in that kiss, swallowed by the force of everything we had built, everything we could be.
His lips moved against mine with desperation, as if he couldn’t bear another second without touching me. And I responded with equal passion, my hands fisting the fabric of his shirt, pulling him even closer. My heart raced, my breath shallow, and the world around us disappeared. All I could feel was him—his warmth, his strength, his intensity.
When we finally pulled away, I was breathless, my cheeks flushed. His eyes locked onto mine, his expression filled with something I couldn’t quite name.
“Do you believe me now?” he whispered, his forehead resting against mine.
I didn’t answer right away. I couldn’t. But the kiss had said everything I needed to know.
