Chapter 127: Debby is gone
Chapter 127: Debby is gone
Cara pov
The moment I entered the battle, everything changed. I let loose my force, allowing it to burn around me, some rogues who mindlessly jumped on me were burned to crisp. Then, those that didn't burn were met with my claws. My claws slashed through the rogues with deadly precision, my body moving on instinct. Each strike was swift and brutal, my strength far surpassing theirs.
My entrance relieved Gareth and the people a little. The first wave of rogues were either burnt or were missing their organs. After the first wave was over, everybody stared in utter disbelief. Garreth, had an unreadable expression, but the surprise and relief didn't pass my heightened senses.
Emily had a look of utter shock on her young, hardened face. She was standing beside Garreth, and with Aiden, her mate glued to her side. I found out a long time ago.
“She is a monster, the feral rogue's leader” one person in the crowd shouted ,but nobody paid heed to the shout. I didn’t know if it was fear, but they all stared at me with a dumbfounded expression.
“Caras!!” Emma screamed, breaking the tension, causing me to look over at where she stood, garbed in her warriors outfit. She wasn't the little lovesick girl anymore, but rather a veteran young warrior supporting her sister.
I know I looked menacing and demonic with my almost 15-inch sword and blood dribbling from it. But I didn’t care whatever they saw me as. This was me in my natural self, the pureblood, God of the battlefield, lover of war.
But this was the calm before the storm. A shout rang out as the second wave of rogues appeared at the tree tops and surrounding hills. I smiled, welcoming them into the second phase of the day.
The rogues faltered, their confidence wavering as they realized they were no match for me. They stared at their incomplete fallen comrades and backed away in fear, but I won't let them.
“Cara!” Garreth’s voice rang out above the chaos. I turned to see him fighting off two rogues at once, his expression a mix of relief and disbelief.
I nodded at him, a silent acknowledgement that I wasn’t leaving this fight. But what he did next left me speechless.
“Everybody, listen to Cara, she is your Luna and your head commander from now on”
Garreth had handed me my position back, as the Luna of a pack. It was supposed to be my duty to lead the people to war when the aloha was not around. Bow, he had gone to his work of a beta. Supporting those that I'd In power.
By now, remaining rogues seeing that they were dying were retreating, but I won't let them.
“All units assemble, don't let the rogues get away, we will chase them down and reclaim our land” I shouted, my aura bursting out in waves as more of fire seeped out of the surrounding, giving me the boost I needed.
“For the alpha” my voice echoed throughout the battlefield
“For the alpha”. The people responded in a deafening agreement, and we chased the retreating rogues, killing them the way.
The battlefield was chaotic, snarls and growls filled the air, claws clashing against calw, but one thing was assured, we were done hiding. It's high time we reclaim our land and punish those that offended us.
The battle ended with our win and their defeat. The rogues had run away at first glance when they saw many of them lying on the ground dead. They didn’t care about helping their comrades. Just as typical rogues would do, they fled at the sight of danger.
Garreth and the whole surviving pack members that survived the council's attack were cleaning up the battlefield, collecting anything usable that was spoiled from war that the fleeing rogues and some warriors had left behind. The smile on their faces was like a beacon of hope to me,a flicker of happiness. But the happiness was short-lived.
But why did victory feel hollow.
My body ached with exhaustion, my claws dull from endless fighting, yet it was the weight in my chest that truly crushed me. My gaze had swept across the clearing, searching, hoping… but I already knew what happened, I just wouldn't accept it.
I quietly pulled away from the others, retreating to the edge of the clearing, I needed time alone.. My fingers dug into the bark of a tree as I stared blankly into the horizon. The forest stretched endlessly before me, but I wasn’t really seeing it. My mind was somewhere else, somewhere I didn’t want to be.
I heard her before she reached half a mile from me. It was Emily, and she was coming towards me.
“Congratulations on finally sealing it with Aiden” I said dryly, trying to cheer myself up. My sudden words stopped her in the tracks.
“You…you noticed”
Why won't I. My senses are all heightened, and it's not really hidden seeing the ring in my finger. Emily was already a blushing mess.
“You don't know how happy I am for you, I have been waiting for this for a long time now”. I said, causing Emily to blush even the more, before she regained herself.
“Cara, why are you here alone?”
“I’m fine,” I said quickly, forcing my voice to sound steady.
“You’re not,” she replied, her footsteps drawing closer.
I clenched my fists, willing her to leave. “Emily, I said I’m fine.”
I didn’t look at her. I couldn’t. If I did, the mask I was clinging to so desperately would shatter. You can call it denial, but I just didn't care.
She stood there for a moment, silent, her presence heavy with concern. Finally, with a soft sigh, I heard her walk away.
I exhaled slowly, relief and guilt warring within me. I didn’t mean to push her away, but the thought of facing my emotions, of acknowledging the gaping hole that was left in my heart, was too much to bear.
Minutes passed, or maybe hours. I didn’t know. Time felt meaningless as I stood there, staring into the abyss of my thoughts.
“Cara!”
This voice was different, deeper, and firmer. I didn’t need to turn again to know that it was Garreth.
“What do you want?” I muttered, my voice sharper than I intended.
He didn’t flinch. Instead, he stopped a few feet away, crossing his arms as he studied me. “I want to thank you,” he said. “For coming back. For not abandoning us.”
I shrugged, looking away again. “It was the right thing to do.”
“You always do the right thing, don’t you?” His tone was softer now, almost gentle.
I frowned, confused by his words. Before I could respond, he stepped closer, his voice dropping.
“Debby’s gone, Cara.”
The words hit me like a blow, even though I’d known it all along. I squeezed my eyes shut, my nails digging into my palms as I tried to hold back the wave of emotion threatening to overwhelm me.
“Stop,” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“No,” he said firmly. “You need to hear this. You need to accept it. Debby is gone, and pretending it doesn’t hurt won’t bring her back.”
My chest heaved as I struggled to keep my composure. “You don’t understand…”
“I do.”
His voice cut through my protest, raw and filled with emotion. I finally turned to look at him, and the grief in his eyes mirrored my own.
“She meant the world to all of us, to me was more than a friend, she was like my second mother.” he paused, getting his bearings, before he continued. “But especially to you. You don’t have to pretend you’re not grieving, Cara. You don’t have to carry this alone.”
I shook my head, tears blurring my vision. “If I let myself feel it… if I let it, I don’t know if I’ll come back from it.”
“You will,” he said firmly, stepping closer until he was right in front of me. “Because you’re strong. Stronger than any of us. But strength doesn’t mean shutting everyone out. It doesn’t mean pretending you’re fine when you’re not.”
I looked away, my throat tightening.
“Debby wouldn’t want this for you,” he said softly. “She wouldn’t want you to bury your pain and let it eat you alive. She’d want you to grieve, to feel it, and then to move forward.”
A single tear slipped down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it away, but it was too late. The dam had cracked, and the flood was inevitable.
“I miss her,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “I miss her so much.”
“I know,” Garreth said, his tone filled with understanding. “We all do.”
For the first time since the battle, I let the pain in. I let myself feel the crushing weight of Debby’s absence, the hole she’d left in my heart. Tears streamed down my face as the grief consumed me, I let it all out, sobbing and crying hard, and Garreth stood there, silent and steady, his presence a firm support in the storm
Debby was gone. She is dead.
