Chapter 48 48
Chapter 48 48
KNOX’S POV
We had our eyes out for Lucius.
Everything happening in his pack has been reported back to us. Though not in close range, because of how tightly secured everything was and our informant could not risk their lives, but they still managed to get us what was necessary. The last we had from them was when some anonymous person had successfully attacked the palace in Lucius' absence and tried to kidnap the girl. Now that wouldn't be news to us mainly because he does have enemies who would try in every possible way to get back at him. What is the easiest way to do that than getting their hand on what he cherished most at the moment?
But the whole thing quickly piqued our interest when it was told that he let the attacker go scot-free and even inquired about an injury from the encounter. Now that sure as heck doesn't sound like what our dear uncle would do. Not unless there is a backstory. A very interesting one at that. The final nail in the coffin? He caught the mole who had been aiding the attacker and imprisoned her. But he doesn't do the same to the attacker. Definitely something going on around there. Something I would love to find out because it might be useful to our own operation.
“Is this even about the girl again?” Ryan mumbled beside me. He was sharpening his sword, going real hard on the job that could use a minimal amount of energy, which only meant one thing. He was in a state of conflict and confusion. Always take it out on things physically.
“What girl?” I couldn't remember us conversing about any girl for the past two hours that we sat side by side.
“The girl…” He sighed. “Valeria or whatever her name is. Are we really waging this war just to get back to him back for stealing her from us? Is that still the purpose of our bitterness?”
“Bitterness.” I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my throat. “Is that what you call it now?”
“Just answer my damn question man, I need to clear things up in my head.” He hissed with irritation. More confirmation that he was in a foul mood. The cause of it though, I have no idea.
“Hmm….I cannot answer that for you Ryan. I can only answer for myself. Left for you to decide what the actual motivation is for you.”
He shrugged and I took that as my hint to continue.
“Let’s be honest, even before the issue of the girl, you have always tried to find a way to step up to Lucius. He was just far above our reach then, to add to the fact that we were living under his roof. The incident with the girl, just a mere push in the right direction. A reason to pick a fight. At this point, the girl could go fuck herself, I want nothing to do with her, not after he had used every part of her.”
“So?”
“I am doing this for myself. To prove to myself that no one could step on my path and go away freely. He will regret.”
“If he is even alive to regret that is.” Ryan shrugged, dropping his now well-sharpened sword and picking up mine.
“So we are on the same track?” I flashed him a grin, nudging his shoulder in the process.
“You could say that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one with the feelings of complete detachment from the earlier case. I mean what the hell will I use a girl for? When I have my nasty reputation to fix.”
“Yeah right? We cannot forget the fact that he was humiliated in front of guards on his pack.”
“And news fucking spread fast around there.” Ryan groaned, as though the mere thought of the past brought him intense pain. “I cannot believe we have yet to take that out on him.” He kissed his teeth as he added.
“Patience brother, our first two attempts didn't yield us anything to write home about. We need time to train, plan before executing.” I tapped his shoulder with assurance.
“Right, it suck to just sit around and do nothing.” He handed my sword back to me, and I carefully placed it on the ground beside me, noticing how much it shone more in the rays of the sun now that it had been sharpened and well-polished.
“For a starter, we aren't just sitting around. We have a plan. A very brilliant plan and in order to execute it, we need to train. Which is exactly what we are doing now. Training to make sure we are sharp enough to achieve our goals. You shouldn't forget that even if we might be going at a slow pace, we are on the right track and eventually, we will definitely reach it. Our revenge.”
“If you ever want to let go of war affairs, you should consider a career in motivation, you are smooth at it.” He playfully nudged my shoulder before pulling himself up, stretching his hand forward, and helping me up too.
“Look who is talking.” I rolled my eyes dramatically. “You are just down today if not I am sure who would have been the one doing the most motivational speaking.”
“Yeah right, let’s get back to what really matters.” He raised his sword in a battle stance, I raised mine too and we continued to train after our much-needed rest.
“With the amount of time we dedicate to training, trust me when I say this, our dearest uncle will sure as heck not know what hit him when we come for him.”
“And I promise to destroy him, erase every bit of him from history, and tarnish every piece of reputation he built for himself. Bit by bit.”
“Now aren't you being too harsh? You ungrateful nephew.” I laughed.
“I heard Camilla is back.”
And just like that, our conversation turned toward the every outstanding female Lycan is history. The only one actually.
