Chapter 121 Strategy
Chapter 121 Strategy
Cassandra POV.
I spread new maps across the table. "We fortify the fortress as primary position. But we create three fallback positions—here at the eastern ridge, here at the river crossing, here at the forest boundary."
"Why fallback positions?" Theron asks. "Sounds like planning for defeat."
"Sounds like planning for reality." Garrick counters. "You never rely on single defensive line. When—not if—the first position is breached, you need organized retreat to prepared position."
"Silverclaw has fought dark magic users before. We've learned from their experience. Multiple defensive layers. Communication networks. Coordinated retreat protocols."
"Communication how?" Another Elder asks. "Viktor can intercept magical signals."
Rhea finally speaks. Voice carrying Oracle resonance. "I've prepared communication crystals. Linked through Oracle magic, not standard pack bonds. Viktor can't intercept what he doesn't understand."
She produces small crystals from her pouch. Each one glowing faintly silver.
"Each position commander gets one. Direct communication between all positions simultaneously. Instant coordination."
"What about weapons?" Caden asks. "Normal blades won't affect enslaved werewolves controlled by blood magic."
"Silver weapons blessed by Oracle blood." Garrick gestures to stockpiles against the wall. "Disruption crystals that interfere with magical control. We've been forging them all week. Silverclaw's smiths worked with your Oracle to create hybrid weapons—physical and magical combined."
I watch Logan watch Rune. She's been working with Rhea daily. Providing Oracle blood for the blessings. Pushing herself to exhaustion.
"My rogues will harry Viktor's forces during approach." Kane's voice echoes from the scrying mirror. "Hit and run attacks along the northern route. Reduce numbers. Delay arrival. Create chaos before they even reach your fortress."
"Coordinated with our scouts." I add. Point to map markers. "We'll have advance warning of their movements. Position ambushes. Force them to travel slowly. Cautiously."
But Theron still doesn't look convinced. "What about civilians? Elders? Children? We can't ask them to fight."
"We're not." Rune says. "Evacuation to Silverclaw territory. Garrick has agreed to shelter our non-combatants during the battle."
Garrick nods. "Our fortress can accommodate two hundred easily. They'll be safe there. Protected by Silverclaw warriors who remain behind."
"You'd trust them with our families?" Theron challenges.
"I trust Garrick with my life." Logan says. Flat. "Which means I trust him with our families. The alliance is solid."
Theron subsides.
"What if we lose?" A younger warrior asks. Female. Barely twenty. Eyes wide. "What if Viktor breaks through all our defenses?"
Silence falls.
Rune meets the young warrior's eyes. "Then we make sure he pays such a high price that the ritual fails anyway. We fight to the last. We protect what matters. We don't surrender."
"Even if it means dying?"
"Especially if it means dying. Because if Viktor succeeds, we all become his slaves anyway. Death is preferable to that."
The truth settles over the room.
"Resource allocation." I break the silence. Pull out supply ledgers. "Every warrior needs combat training. Every family needs evacuation supplies. Every defensive position needs fortification. We're spread thin."
"Prioritization?" Logan asks.
"Warriors first. Combat readiness is primary. Evacuation second—families need to be gone before Viktor arrives. Fortification third, using whatever resources remain."
"Training schedule?" Garrick asks.
"Daily combat drills starting tomorrow. Morning for physical conditioning, afternoon for tactical practice, evening for magical defense training with Rhea."
"That's brutal. Warriors will be exhausted."
"Better exhausted and skilled than rested and dead." I counter.
Under the table, Logan's hand moves. Finds Rune's thigh. She doesn't pause in watching the discussion.
"What about Viktor's specific capabilities?" Marcus asks. "My intel focused on his army. But he himself is dangerous."
"Elaborate." Logan commands.
Marcus shifts. "I only saw him twice. But both times... his magic is different from normal pack magic. Darker. Older. He can compel werewolves to shift against their will. Force them to attack each other. One rogue tried to resist his command—Viktor made him tear out his own throat."
Gasps around the table.
"So we avoid direct confrontation with Viktor himself." Rune says. "Focus on delaying his forces. Disrupting the ritual. Let him waste energy controlling his army instead of attacking us directly."
