FIFTY SIX
FIFTY SIX
Lyra
He needed me. They both did. As much as I wanted to be around whenever Kade woke up, I needed to have a word with Lyra. I glanced at Kael’s sleeping form. His head lay on my lap as he slept soundly. Took him a while to give in to sleep, but I believe I had a hand in helping him
Finally fell asleep.
I signaled for one of the fox guards who stood in front of the clinic door. He jogged towards me with what seemed to be an arrow or a spear. I wasn’t so sure what it was, but he had a weapon on him.
“Help me get him to one of the beds inside the clinic. Preferably, the one next to his brother”
He looked scared but said nothing. He just nodded his head, dropped his weapon on the ground, and placed his hand underneath Kael’s head. It all happened so fast. The guard was groaning, holding his head on the ground. Kael was awake and had already shifted as he growled down on the injured guard. More guards had gathered and were pointing their spears. Let’s call them spears. They were pointing it at Kael's vicious state.
“Whoa whoa, relax, you’re safe,” I said, putting myself between Kael and the guards.
He looked like he was ready to snap their heads off, but the moment I stepped into his line of vision, the feral look in his wolf’s eye calmed. The wolf came closer to me, smelling me before giving Kael a chance to come out.
He looked alert but not feral. Good, that meant he trusted me.
“Hey, hey,” I pulled his face to mine and stared into his eyes.
“Breathe. It’s okay. You’re safe.” He nodded his head, breathing hard against my face. I smiled. I had never had anyone trust or listen to me like this before.
“What was he trying to do?” He managed to mutter, still trying to have a look at the guard who was on the floor.
“Take him to see the nurse,” I said to the other two guards who glanced at me warily. They didn’t trust Kael as much as they didn’t trust me. I didn’t blame them, it’s not like I have done anything worth trusting. They only listened to me because I was Anna’s sister.
I didn’t pay them any attention again and focused on Kael. His breathing slowly returned to normal.
“I just wanted him to help me move you. I obviously can’t carry you by myself”
His lips formed the word oh. “I-I didn’t know I-i just th-“
I grabbed his hand and gave it a light squeeze. “I know what you were thinking, and it’s alright. I just wanted to excuse myself for a bit and didn’t want to leave you out here”
“Oh. Sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep”
“Don’t be silly. I wanted you to sleep. Who knows how long you and Kade have been running through the forest”
“He still hasn’t woken up yet?”
“No, not yet. But the nurse says that before the fourth night, he should be healed fully.” I assured him, and he nodded.
“You can excuse yourself now, Lyra,” he said, smiling.
“I won’t be long. I just want to have a word with Anna. I’d be back before you miss me,” that somehow eased his spirit as he broke out into a smile.
“I already miss you,” he said, looking deep into my eyes. My heart did a little flip. I kept experiencing strange things when I was around Kael and Kade.
“Well, don’t miss me too much. I don’t plan to be gone for a long time”
I wanted to say more. I wanted to tell him to remain on alert and fight. I was scared that the only reason neither he nor Kade had been attacked in the clinic was that I was there, but I believe Kael can hold his own. After what happened today, I can never doubt the strength of his wolf.
“I shall be waiting,” he kissed my forehead, and I smiled.
I turned to leave and catch a glimpse of another guard right by the corridor. “If so much as a hair on his head gets attacked. I’d kill you myself “
The guard's eyes grew wide, but I didn’t wait for anything as I walked away. Since I finally felt wanted by Kade and Kael, I have been extremely violent. Even with my words. And I wasn’t just making threats I couldn’t fulfill. I was ready to carry out my words. I knew all these were mostly driven by how possessive Ria is.
People were wary of me. I didn’t care. In their eyes, I betrayed them by not letting Anna carry out their revenge by ending the last bloodline of the people who supposedly killed off all of ours. I still believe there’s more to that story. And once Kade is awake, we shall get to the bottom of this.
I couldn’t find Anna for a few minutes, but soon I found her in the middle of the council meeting.
I had never been here, but it didn’t take me long to find her. She was yelling loudly enough that everyone around, a few miles could hear. Without knocking, I barged inside the chambers. Four people sat on what looked like thrones. Two elderly women and two young men. Then ishada who stood by the corner of the room with his arms folded across his chest.
Anna stood in the middle, waving her hands everywhere as she spoke angrily. Once my presence got noticed, she quieted down and angrily turned to face me. “You shouldn’t have done that, Delyria”
“Done what? Saved my MATES from getting killed by my sister, whom I would hate with all my life after that happens?”
She blinked so fast, taken aback by my words. “Surely you didn’t think I’d thank you f-“
“They killed our parents! They killed Ishada’s mate and family. Look at Athena. They killed all her bloodline.” I looked up at one of the elderly women who had a frown on her face. It wasn’t directed to me, so I didn’t bother.
“Their parents did. They are as innocent as any innocent person. Just because their parents did something, which I sincerely don’t believe by the way, that doesn’t mean we blame them for it. Did you blame Mom for leaving you behind and saving only me?” That stunned not just her but every other person in the room.
“Don’t you dare,” she walked up to me, crowding my space. Her finger poked the soft spot of my chest.
“Did you or did you not? You should be mad at me for being the only one she picked, but you don’t seem like it. Why?”
“That’s different. I hated you. Did you know how long I hated you for? I watched you suffer at Dark Pine and thought you were receiving your karma. I thought I liked it, but watching you cry and be alone killed me. It’s not your fault. Mom made a mistake. I couldn’t hold it over you.”
“Good. That’s all I want to hear. It wasn’t my fault!”
