Chapter 9 Nine
The following morning, Sophie woke before dawn. The silence of her home was punctuated only by the faint ticking of the clock in the living room. Ethan was still asleep, curled against her chest like a small shadow of warmth. Sophie’s eyes drifted over him, heart heavy with worry. Camille and Vivian had already begun their moves, and she could feel the storm approaching.
Her phone vibrated sharply on the nightstand, pulling her from her thoughts. The screen flashed a name she did not recognize. Hesitating for a heartbeat, she answered.
“Hello?”
A calm, almost rehearsed voice spoke. “Miss Hart, consider this a courtesy call. Your presence in New York is being watched closely. Some people are concerned about the Steele family… and about you.”
Sophie’s grip on the phone tightened. “Who is this?” she demanded, her voice firmer than she felt.
There was a pause before the voice continued, smooth and threatening. “Just know that if you continue to interfere with certain arrangements, consequences will follow. This is your only warning.”
Before she could respond, the line went dead. Sophie’s pulse raced. Camille and Vivian were moving faster than she anticipated. She swallowed, forcing herself to breathe slowly.
When Dominic arrived later that morning, he immediately noticed her tension. “Something is wrong,” he stated, his gaze sharp. His wolf had already picked up the unease radiating from her.
Sophie handed him the phone. “They are already targeting me. Camille, Vivian… whoever it is, they are starting with threats.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened. “I should have anticipated this,” he muttered. “They always underestimated me, but now they are underestimating us both. No one threatens my family.”
Sophie felt a small spark of relief at his words. “Then we need a plan. We cannot wait for them to make the first real move. We need to be proactive.”
Dominic nodded. “Agreed. I will handle their sources of influence within the company. You focus on keeping Ethan safe and yourself out of any traps.”
The day passed in a tense blur. Sophie and Dominic moved carefully, checking security systems, reviewing schedules, and preparing for potential attacks on their credibility or personal safety. Despite the looming threat, they tried to maintain a sense of normalcy for Ethan. Watching him play in the garden with Dominic, Sophie felt her resolve harden.
Later, during a brief break in the office, Sophie noticed a stack of magazines left in the living room. Curiosity tugged at her, and she flipped through one, only to find her face in a glossy spread—an article about the Steele family with subtle insinuations about her intentions, her presence, and even her past. The headline implied she was scheming for attention, a threat to the family legacy.
Sophie’s eyes widened in anger and disbelief. Camille and Vivian had gone further than threats—they were publicly smearing her reputation, laying the groundwork for doubt in Dominic’s mind.
Dominic appeared behind her, his sharp blue eyes scanning the article. His hand gripped her shoulder firmly. “This ends now. I will not allow them to manipulate perception or twist the truth. They underestimate how far I will go to protect you and Ethan.”
Sophie swallowed hard, feeling both fear and determination. “Then we fight back. Not with anger, but with strategy. We make sure their lies are exposed before they can spread further.”
Dominic nodded, his wolf stirring with satisfaction. “We start with Camille. She will make a mistake soon, and when she does, we will have the leverage.”
By evening, the gala was in full swing. Sophie had donned a simple, elegant gown, her hair pulled back to emphasize her sharp features. She moved through the room with careful poise, observing the crowd. Camille was there, predictably smiling, her posture rigid, eyes darting to Sophie whenever she moved. Vivian lingered in the shadows, a faintly satisfied smirk on her lips as if she believed she was already winning.
Dominic stayed close, his hand lightly brushing hers when they walked together. Sophie felt the strength in his presence, and for a fleeting moment, she allowed herself to relax.
Suddenly, Camille stepped forward, her voice carrying through the hall. “Ladies and gentlemen, I have something to share regarding Sophie Hart.”
Sophie froze, her heart thundering. All eyes turned toward her. Dominic’s hand tightened around hers, a silent anchor.
Camille smiled, the kind of smile that promised ruin. “It has come to our attention that Sophie Hart has questionable intentions within the Steele family. We have reason to believe her presence here is less about family and more about personal gain. We should all remain cautious.”
Whispers spread through the room like wildfire. Sophie felt her face heat with embarrassment and anger. Dominic’s jaw tightened, and his wolf growled low in his mind. He stepped in front of her, his posture commanding.
“That is enough,” Dominic said, his voice cold and sharp, cutting through the murmur. “Sophie Hart is a valued member of this family. Her intentions are beyond reproach. Anyone who spreads lies about her will be held accountable. I suggest you consider your actions carefully.”
Camille’s smile faltered slightly, but she maintained her composure. “Of course, Dominic. I merely wanted to ensure everyone remained informed.”
Dominic’s gaze did not waver. “Information must be based on truth. Lies are dangerous. Remember that.”
The crowd shifted, sensing the tension. Camille’s confidence wavered under Dominic’s glare, and Vivian, realizing the first strike had been blocked, withdrew subtly.
Later that night, Sophie and Dominic sat in the quiet of the estate, reviewing the events. Sophie’s hands trembled slightly as she poured herself a glass of water. “They are bold,” she murmured. “They are not stopping.”
Dominic leaned close, his voice firm. “We expected boldness. That is why we are preparing. We anticipate, we plan, and we act before they have a chance to strike again. Sophie, you are not alone in this. I will protect you, Ethan, and our family no matter what.”
Sophie looked up, meeting his gaze. “I know. And we will not let them succeed. This time, we face them head-on.”
Dominic reached for her hand, entwining their fingers. “Together. Always together.”
Meanwhile, in a darkened corner of the city, Camille and Vivian convened with their remaining allies. “He is too strong,” Camille admitted, her eyes flashing with irritation. “Dominic’s loyalty to Sophie is dangerous. But we will not relent.”
Vivian’s voice was icy. “No. We continue. We manipulate, we lie, and we create distrust. If Sophie believes she is untouchable, we only have to wait for her to falter.”
Camille nodded. “It will take patience, but we will find the right moment. She cannot anticipate every move. We will exploit her one weakness.”
Back at the estate, Sophie finally allowed herself a moment of rest. Ethan slept soundly, Dominic watched over her with a quiet intensity. The storm was approaching, but for the first time in years, Sophie felt ready to meet it. She had strength, allies, and a family worth protecting.
As she drifted into sleep, Dominic’s hand rested over hers, a silent promise of protection and unity. The first strike had been deflected, but both knew it was only the beginning. Camille and Vivian would not stop, and Sophie, Dominic, and Ethan would need all their courage, intelligence, and trust to survive what was coming.
Outside, the night whispered secrets, carrying the promise of further conflict, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of power. But inside the Steele estate, a family had found its center, ready to face whatever the world threw at them.
And as the first hints of dawn colored the sky, Sophie’s heart filled with determination. She would not let fear control her. She would not let the lies dictate her life. She would fight for her child, her family, and her future—no matter the cost.
