Chapter 10 Ten
The sun had barely risen over New York when Sophie’s phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t an anonymous number. It was a formal email from Camille’s legal team, marked urgent. Sophie’s hands trembled as she opened the attachment. The letter accused her of attempting to interfere in Steele family affairs, insinuating her presence at the estate and the gala was part of a calculated plan to manipulate Dominic.
Her breath hitched. This wasn’t just threats anymore it was an official attempt to undermine her legally and socially.
Dominic arrived moments later, his expression unreadable as he scanned the letter. “Camille and Vivian have escalated faster than I expected,” he said, his jaw tightening. His wolf stirred, restless and fierce. “This… will not stand.”
Sophie’s eyes met his, the weight of both fear and resolve settling over her. “We need to respond wisely. We can’t let them dictate the narrative, but we also need to protect ourselves and Ethan.”
Dominic nodded. “We respond strategically. They want a reaction, so we don’t give them one. Instead, we counter in ways they won’t see coming.”
Sophie felt the surge of determination that had defined her past seven years. “Then we plan carefully. First, we secure Ethan. Then we gather evidence of their schemes.”
Dominic’s eyes softened for a moment as they landed on Ethan, who had come bounding into the room, oblivious to the tension. The boy’s face lit up when he saw Dominic. “Daddy!”
Dominic knelt, scooping him up. “Morning, champ. How did you sleep?”
“Good!” Ethan answered, hugging him tightly. “Mom, you don’t have to worry. Daddy is here.”
Sophie felt a warmth spread through her chest. Seeing her son and Dominic together finally was something she had longed for, a symbol of what her life could become despite the chaos surrounding them.
By midday, Sophie had arranged a private meeting with Mrs. Chen, her mentor and guide. Mrs. Chen’s expression was sharp as she looked over the email. “They’ve moved from subtle intimidation to open manipulation,” she said. “This is dangerous, but it is also predictable. Women like Camille and Vivian always overreach. That’s their weakness.”
“How do we stop them?” Sophie asked, her voice calm but urgent.
Mrs. Chen tapped the table. “You build a record, Sophie. Every interaction, every email, every lie they attempt to spread collect it. Let the evidence speak louder than their gossip. And Dominic… he has to take the lead in showing the family and the board that your place is legitimate.”
Dominic arrived shortly afterward, ready for the next step. “We can’t wait. Camille and Vivian are trying to create doubt, but they miscalculate one thing: our unity. Sophie, you will present your side calmly, confidently, and factually. I will support you in every way.”
Sophie nodded, swallowing her fear. “We need to expose them without letting them know we see through their moves.”
The afternoon blurred with preparation. Sophie gathered her work records, past correspondences, and evidence of her integrity and independence. Dominic coordinated with the family’s legal advisors, ensuring every possible angle was covered. Ethan watched with fascination, occasionally asking questions about their “secret mission.”
By evening, the confrontation became inevitable. The family board had gathered at the Steele estate to discuss Camille’s accusations. The room was tense, the air thick with anticipation. Camille sat with her usual perfect posture, eyes flicking toward Sophie whenever she moved. Vivian leaned against the wall, observing silently, her hands clasped tightly.
Dominic stepped forward first. “Before we discuss anything, let me state this clearly: Sophie Hart is part of this family by both legal right and moral responsibility. Her intentions are not manipulative but protective. Any insinuation otherwise is false.”
Whispers rippled through the board. Camille’s expression tightened. “Dominic, surely you don’t mean to dismiss the concerns of the family board so casually?”
“I do,” Dominic said, his voice calm but unyielding. “I have reviewed the allegations. They are baseless. Sophie has acted in the best interests of the family, the company, and her child. Any attempt to tarnish her reputation will be met with the full legal weight of the Steele family.”
Sophie felt a surge of pride. Dominic was not just defending her; he was actively reclaiming the power Camille and Vivian were trying to steal.
Camille stood abruptly, attempting to force the narrative. “Dominic, surely you cannot ignore the optics! Sophie’s presence, combined with her sudden appearance in the city, raises questions. People will assume…”
Dominic cut her off, voice firm. “People will assume what is true. Sophie’s loyalty and integrity are beyond question. You, Camille, and Vivian, have repeatedly attempted to manipulate perception. This board and the family will not be fooled.”
Vivian’s expression darkened. “Dominic, you are being naive. This is bigger than just perception. Legally, Sophie could be restricted from certain affairs if we pursue…”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed, a quiet storm gathering behind them. “And you think I would allow that? I will not. Sophie and Ethan’s rights are non-negotiable. Any attempt to intimidate or harm them will be met with consequences. I suggest you reconsider your approach.”
Sophie remained calm, though her heart raced. She spoke for the first time, her voice steady and deliberate. “I am not here to challenge anyone, nor am I here to take advantage of the Steele family. I have worked hard to build my life, and I will continue to do so. My only concern is the safety and future of my son and myself. That is not negotiable, nor is it a threat. It is fact.”
The room fell silent. Dominic’s hand rested lightly on hers, a subtle anchor of support. Camille’s confidence faltered slightly, Vivian’s smirk vanished, replaced by cold calculation. They realized that their first coordinated attack had been met not just with resistance, but with strength and unity.
Later that night, Sophie and Dominic sat in the study, reviewing what had just happened. Ethan was asleep in Sophie’s arms, and the quiet of the estate offered a rare sense of peace.
“They won’t stop,” Sophie said softly, her voice a whisper against the night. “Camille and Vivian… they will escalate.”
Dominic nodded, his hand brushing her hair from her face. “I know. But neither will we. They may try threats, manipulation, or legal action, but we have something they don’t: truth, unity, and our family.”
Sophie sighed, leaning against him. “I’ve spent so many years protecting myself and Ethan. I thought I was ready for anything, but this… it’s bigger than I imagined.”
Dominic tightened his arm around her. “You are stronger than you know. You raised a brilliant, kind, resilient son. You faced the world alone and succeeded. Camille and Vivian are clever, but they lack our bond, our clarity, and our will. We will meet their schemes head-on. Together.”
Sophie felt the weight of his words, the promise behind them. “Then we prepare. And when they strike again, we will be ready.”
Outside, the night was dark, but the estate remained lit with warmth and determination. Camille and Vivian continued to plot, unaware that the very unity they sought to disrupt had only grown stronger under pressure.
As the first hints of dawn touched the city skyline, Sophie allowed herself a brief moment of hope. The road ahead was dangerous, full of intrigue, and fraught with the possibility of betrayal but she was no longer alone. She had Dominic by her side, and together, they would protect their family.
The battle had begun in earnest, but so had the counterattack. Every move Camille and Vivian made would be met with strategy, courage, and an unbreakable bond that had survived years of separation, lies, and loss.
Sophie closed her eyes, Ethan resting against her chest, Dominic beside her. For the first time in a long time, she felt ready not just to survive but to fight for her family and her future, no matter the cost.
The stage was set. The players were in place. And Sophie Hart, with Dominic Steele at her side, was no longer a pawn in someone else’s game. She was a force to be reckoned with.
