The council summons
The council summons
"Her mate's death," Morgana said. "According to these texts, the First Luna was bonded to the First Alpha, the original wolf blessed by the Moon Goddess. They were meant to lead the packs together, to create a dynasty. But the First Alpha was killed in a territorial dispute with another supernatural faction. The First Luna blamed the Moon Goddess for not protecting him, for not intervening. She tried to destroy the mate bond system in revenge, to prevent any other wolf from experiencing the pain of losing their fated mate."
"The Moon Goddess stopped her," Elena guessed.
"Not just stopped her. Sealed her away in a pocket dimension, trapped with her grief and rage for a thousand years," Morgana said. "And she's been there ever since, waiting for a crack in the seal. Waiting for her chance at revenge."
"And severed mate bonds create those cracks," Elena said.
"Specifically, bonds that were broken by divine intervention," Morgana corrected. "Natural bond breaks, through death or rejection, those don't affect the seal. But when the Moon Goddess herself severs a bond, it weakens the magic that holds the First Luna captive."
"Why would she risk that?" Elena asked. "Why sever bonds at all if it threatens the seal?"
"Because she's arrogant," Morgana said bluntly. "She thinks she can control the situation. Three severed bonds, three tests. If all three couples pass, the seal actually strengthens. But if even one fails..." She trailed off significantly.
"The seal breaks and the First Luna escapes," Elena finished. "What happened to the other two couples? The ones who were tested before us?"
Morgana hesitated. "One couple passed. Their bond was restored, they're living happily under the Moon Goddess's watchful eye. The other couple failed."
"And they died," Elena said, remembering what Morgana had said before.
"Not immediately," Morgana corrected. "They failed the test, the bond dissolved permanently, and they went their separate ways. She took a new lover within weeks. He spiraled into depression. And then, three months after the dissolution, they both died on the same night. Different locations, different methods. But unmistakably connected."
"The Moon Goddess killed them," Elena said.
"Or the First Luna did," Morgana suggested. "Maybe she's already reaching through small cracks in the seal. Testing her power. Punishing those who weaken her prison."
Elena felt cold. "So if Harrison and I fail the test, we die. But if we pass under false pretenses, the seal cracks anyway and everyone dies."
"Unless you find a third option," Morgana said, finally looking up. "Elena, there's something I haven't told you. Something the Moon Goddess showed me through this mark."
She touched the silver runes on her skin.
"What?"
"The artificial bonds," Morgana said. "They're real. David was telling the truth about that. But he was wrong about the motivation. The Moon Goddess doesn't create artificial bonds to control wolves. She creates them to strengthen the seal."
"I don't understand," Elena said.
"Natural mate bonds are powerful but unstable," Morgana explained. "They can break under pressure. But artificial bonds, bonds created through deliberate magical manipulation, those are nearly unbreakable. They're designed to withstand anything, even divine intervention. That's why the Moon Goddess has been manufacturing bonds for the last century. She's creating a network of unbreakable connections that reinforce the First Luna's prison."
"But our bond broke," Elena pointed out.
"Because the Moon Goddess deliberately severed it," Morgana said. "To test if the underlying connection was strong enough to survive without the magical reinforcement. If you and Harrison can rebuild your bond through pure choice, through genuine love, it becomes something even more powerful than an artificial bond. It becomes proof that the mate bond system works, that wolves can choose each other freely and create unbreakable connections."
"And if we can't?" Elena asked.
"Then the whole system is revealed as a lie," Morgana said quietly. "And the First Luna wins."
Elena sat down heavily. "This is too much. The pressure, the stakes, the manipulation. How am I supposed to make a genuine choice when everything is designed to force my hand?"
"You can't," Morgana admitted. "That's the trap. The Moon Goddess has set up a test that's impossible to pass authentically. Because the moment you know the stakes, the moment you understand what happens if you fail, your choice is no longer free. You're choosing out of fear, not love."
"So we're doomed," Elena said flatly.
"Maybe," Morgana said. "Or maybe there's something the Moon Goddess doesn't know. Something even the First Luna doesn't know."
"What?"
"Lucas," Morgana said simply. "Your son is an anomaly. He shouldn't exist, and yet he does. He's accessing magic that was supposed to be lost. He's having visions that bypass the Moon Goddess's control. He's the wild card in this whole situation."
"You think Lucas can stop the First Luna?" Elena asked.
"I think Lucas might be the key to breaking this cycle entirely," Morgana said. "But not in the way anyone expects."
Before Elena could ask what she meant, alarms blared throughout the pack house. Elena and Morgana ran to the window and saw smoke rising from the direction of the pack's main gate.
"Not again," Elena breathed.
They ran outside to find chaos. The gates were blown open, protesters were flooding in, some carrying signs about mate bond freedom, others carrying weapons. Pack security was trying to hold them back, but they were overwhelmed.
"Where's Marcus?" Elena shouted at a passing pack member.
"With Lucas, in the safe room!" the wolf shouted back.
At least her son was protected. Elena looked around for Harrison and remembered he was gone, at the Council meeting. She was the highest-ranking pack member present.
She had to take control.
"Morgana, can you create a barrier?" Elena asked.
"Not with this many people," Morgana said. "My magic isn't that strong."
"What about your enhanced magic? The gift from the Moon Goddess?"
Morgana's eyes widened. "That might work. But Elena, if I use that much power, I'll pass out. You'll be on your own to contain the situation."
"Do it," Elena commanded.
Morgana nodded and began chanting. The silver runes on her skin blazed with light, and a shimmering barrier began forming across the gate, cutting off the flow of protesters. Those already inside were trapped, but no more could enter.
The witch collapsed, and Elena caught her, lowering her gently to the ground. Then she turned to face the trapped protesters.
"I am Elena Steele, Luna of this pack!" she shouted, projecting her voice with all the authority she could muster. "You are trespassing on pack lands. Leave now or face consequences."
"You're not a real Luna!" someone shouted from the crowd. "Your bond is broken! You have no authority!"
Elena felt the words like a physical blow, but she forced herself to stand tall. "My bond status doesn't change the law. You're on private property. You're endangering pack members. I'm giving you one chance to leave peacefully."
"We're not leaving until the Alpha faces us!" another voice called. "Until he answers for the Moon Goddess's tyranny!"
"The Alpha is occupied," Elena said. "You'll deal with me."
The crowd surged forward, and Elena realized with sinking dread that she'd just made herself a target. Without the mate bond, her connection to pack authority was tenuous at best. These people sensed weakness.
And they were going to exploit it.
A rock flew from the crowd, striking Elena in the shoulder. She stumbled but didn't fall. More projectiles followed. Pack security tried to intervene, but they were outnumbered.
Elena was about to call for a full retreat when she heard it. A howl. But not from any wolf present.
The howl was coming from inside her own chest.
She felt her bones shift, her muscles tear and reform. She was transforming, but not into her normal wolf form. Something else was happening. Something primal and ancient.
Golden light, the same color as Lucas's visions, poured from her skin. The protesters backed away, fear replacing anger on their faces.
Elena looked down at her hands and saw they were glowing with Original Pack magic.
"That's impossible," someone whispered.
But it wasn't impossible. It was happening. And Elena suddenly understood what Marcus had meant about her bloodline.
She wasn't just human-born. She was Original Pack. And the magic that had been dormant in her blood all her life was finally waking up.
The golden light expanded, washing over the trapped protesters. It didn't harm them, but it compelled them. Elena felt her will extending through the magic, and without conscious thought, she commanded them.
"Leave. Now. And don't come back."
The protesters turned as one and walked calmly toward the broken gates. They filed out in orderly rows, their anger and violence drained away, replaced by docile obedience.
Within minutes, the pack grounds were clear.
Elena stood alone, the golden light still emanating from her skin, and felt a presence brush against her consciousness.
Well done, granddaughter.
The voice was ancient, female, and utterly unfamiliar.
Who are you? Elena thought back.
I am the First Luna. And you, child, are my descendant. My blood runs in your veins. Did you truly think the Moon Goddess could keep us apart forever?
Elena's blood ran cold. You're supposed to be sealed away.
I am. For now. But the seal weakens with every broken bond. And when it finally shatters, I will be free. And you, granddaughter, will help me take my revenge.
The presence withdrew, and Elena collapsed. The golden light faded, leaving her drained and shaking on the ground.
Pack members surrounded her, questions flying, but Elena couldn't process any of it. Her mind was reeling from the revelation.
She wasn't just connected to the Original Pack. She was descended from the First Luna herself.
And the ancient wolf who'd been imprisoned for a thousand years had just claimed her as family.
