The confusion
The confusion
"That's the point," Marcus said from the doorway. He'd followed them. "The Moon Goddess is forcing Elena to confront her doubts, to work through them, to come out the other side with absolute certainty. Because anything less than certainty will fail."
"But I'm not certain," Elena said desperately. "I'm more confused now than when this started."
"Then get certain," Isabella said, her voice hard. "You have twenty-seven days left. Figure out what you really want, Elena, because all our lives depend on it."
Elena looked at the faces surrounding her. Marcus, protective and worried. Morgana, calculating the magical angles. Isabella, whose loyalties were still unclear. And Lucas, her son, unconscious in her arms because he'd been turned into a vessel for ancient magic and prophecy.
None of them could help her. This decision was hers alone.
"Everyone out," Elena said quietly. "I need to be alone with Lucas."
They filed out reluctantly, leaving Elena in the darkened room with her sleeping son. She laid him back in bed and pulled a chair close, watching him breathe.
"What have we gotten ourselves into, baby?" she whispered.
Lucas didn't answer, but in her mind, Elena heard an echo of his prophecy. The seal is cracking. The old one wakes. Three bonds broken. The debt must be paid.
And she realized with sudden, terrible clarity that everyone had been lying. David, Isabella, even Marcus. They all had their own agendas, their own interpretations of the truth.
But Lucas's visions didn't lie. The magic didn't lie.
Something ancient was waking up, and it was hungry for revenge.
Elena must have dozed off in the chair because she woke to Lucas shaking her shoulder. Morning light was streaming through the window, and her son looked normal again, no golden glow, no possessed voice.
"Mama, Grandpa says Daddy has to go to a meeting," Lucas said. "He says I need to stay with you."
Elena stretched, her neck aching from the awkward position. "What meeting?"
"The Council," Lucas said. "All the Alphas. They want to talk about what happened with the Moon Goddess."
Right. The Council of Alphas. Harrison had mentioned it yesterday, though it felt like a lifetime ago.
"Where's your father now?" Elena asked.
"In his office. He's been there all night."
Elena felt a pang of guilt. She should have gone to him, should have at least checked if he was okay. But the revelations from David and Marcus had left her too confused to face Harrison.
"Go get dressed," Elena told Lucas. "I'll make breakfast."
She made her way to the kitchen, surprised to find it empty. Usually pack members were coming and going, grabbing food, socializing. But this morning the whole house felt deserted.
She was pulling eggs from the refrigerator when Harrison appeared in the doorway. He looked terrible, dark circles under his eyes, his clothes rumpled like he'd slept in them.
"Elena," he said. "I was hoping I'd run into you."
"I was with Lucas all night," Elena said, busying herself with cooking so she wouldn't have to meet his eyes. "He had more visions."
"I know. Marcus told me." Harrison moved closer, and Elena fought the urge to step back. "Elena, we need to talk. About us. About the test."
"I know," Elena said. "But you have that Council meeting."
"I'm not going," Harrison said flatly.
Elena looked up in surprise. "You have to. You said they invoked Council Law."
"I don't care," Harrison said. "Let them find me in contempt. You're more important than pack politics."
"No, I'm not," Elena said quietly. She set down the spatula. "Harrison, you're the Alpha. Your pack is watching you. The supernatural world is watching you. You can't afford to show weakness by skipping a mandatory Council meeting just to have a conversation with me."
"You're not just a conversation," Harrison protested. "You're my mate."
"Am I?" Elena challenged. "The bond is gone, Harrison. What am I to you without it?"
Harrison looked stricken. "You're everything. Elena, how can you even ask that?"
"Because I don't know anymore," Elena admitted. She forced herself to meet his eyes. "Do you love me? Really love me? Or did you just love the bond?"
"That's not fair," Harrison said.
"Nothing about this is fair," Elena shot back. "But we need to be honest with each other. For the first time since we met, we need to be brutally, completely honest."
Harrison was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "I don't know if I can be. Honest, I mean. Because I don't know what the truth is anymore."
It was the most vulnerable Elena had ever heard him sound.
"Then we're both lost," she said softly.
They stood there in the kitchen, five feet apart, and the distance between them felt insurmountable.
Lucas's voice broke the moment. "Mama, I'm hungry!"
Elena turned back to the stove, cracking eggs into the pan. Harrison moved to help, and they worked in silence, creating a breakfast neither of them would eat.
"I should go," Harrison finally said. "To the meeting. You're right, I can't show weakness."
"Harrison," Elena said as he turned to leave. "Be careful. If the Council is gathering this quickly, they have an agenda beyond just discussing the Moon Goddess."
"I know," Harrison said. "Thomas, Sarah, and David have all been whispering to other packs. I think they're building a coalition against me."
"Why?"
"Because an Alpha who can't feel his pack bond is a vulnerable Alpha," Harrison said grimly. "And vulnerable Alphas get replaced."
He left before Elena could respond. She served breakfast to Lucas, forcing herself to eat and act normal while her mind raced.
If Harrison was overthrown, what happened to her? To Lucas? Would the new Alpha honor the Moon Goddess's test, or would they simply banish Elena and claim Lucas for the pack?
She needed more information. She needed to understand what was really happening.
After Lucas finished eating, she sent him to play in his room under Marcus's supervision. Then she went looking for Morgana.
She found the witch in the pack's library, surrounded by old texts and grimoires, the silver runes on her skin glowing faintly as she worked.
"Learning anything useful?" Elena asked.
"Too much and not enough," Morgana replied without looking up. "The seal Lucas mentioned, I think I've found references to it. The First Luna's prison. It was created by the Original Pack after she went mad with grief."
"Mad with grief over what?"
