Chapter 18

For the next few weeks, things were going extremely well with Logan. Almost too well, in fact. After our spectacle in the hallway, people had gotten used to seeing us together. It was weird how everyone immediately adjusted by getting used to Logan randomly kissing me at the cafeteria, in class, in the parking lot, even driving me to and from school. I could barely believe it sometimes.

Logan on the other hand, didn’t care. He took his pleasures whenever he could, stealing a kiss here and there, and when he could get me alone, indulged in a full make out session that didn’t fail to leave me breathless and begging for more.

His friends even became nicer to me. I was still a bit shaky about them because their newfound kindness felt fake and theatrical but I wasn’t complaining. At least, Cameroon got off by my back with his stupid comments and sneers, but I had a feeling that it was because Logan beat him up the last time and he was trying to avoid a repeat of that. As I said, I wasn’t complaining.

My friends were not surprised, especially Darren. According to him, he’d called it a long time ago and was convinced that I was blinder than a bat for not seeing it earlier. Aimee was calmer about the entire thing than I expected, her only issue being that she had to hear it from someone else that wasn’t me. I spent a whole week apologizing to her for it before she finally decided to accept my apology.

Though Darren wouldn’t shut up about how he knew Logan had the hots for me, it still bothered me that he’d never said the words. Sure, he had told me that I was pretty and smart and whispered so many sweet nothings in my ear during some of our make out sessions, I was always waiting for him to drop the ‘like’ bomb on me.

Maybe it was hypocritical because I hadn’t said it either. Not like I was waiting for him to say it first or anything. And it shouldn’t have mattered so much but it did. It bothered me that he never said he liked me, only that he was drawn to me. And don’t get me wrong, he’d had so many chances to say the words because we’d been spending an awful lot of time together planning the charity event to raise money for the shelter.

I expected the words to fall out of his mouth anytime soon but it just didn’t happen. He hadn’t even answered the question I’d asked him that day in the hallway. What were we? Color me archaic but usually when a boy likes a girl, he asked her to be his girlfriend, no? Logan hadn’t done that.

And the crazy thing was the entire school thought us to be dating but we weren’t.

We just… were.

I’d never been more torn in my entire life.

“Today was excruciatingly long,” Logan murmured as we pulled up in front of my house. He leaned towards me to grab my hand, intertwining our fingers and placing a kiss at the top of my wrist. “But you were there so I’m not complaining.”

I chuckle, blushing. It’d been almost a month since we started… whatever this was but he still managed to make me blush with only a few words and an act of affection. When he did and said things like this, it confused me even more because I didn’t know if I should be so comfortable liking it or if I should say something to clear up my confusion.

Because the truth was I liked him.

And I wanted him to like me too. I was flattered that he thought me pretty but I wanted more.

“Tell me about it,” I replied. Principal Donna made us present our plans for the charity event to her to be sure we weren’t doing anything outside of school rules. After that, we’d had to go to the shelter to talk to Patty about said plans to make sure she was alright with them. “I could sleep for an entire week.”

I yawned a little and he laughed. “I can see that.” Then his eyes left me for a moment to look at something beyond my shoulder. I followed the line of his sight, pursing my lips when I figured out what he was looking at.

“Logan—”

“It’s fine,” he said, meeting my eyes again. There was a tinge of disappointment and again it occurred to me how deeply Logan felt things. I’d never met a boy who wore his heart on his sleeve as he did and at the same time, could be so closed up. “I understand.”

I eyed him. “What exactly do you understand?”

“That you don’t want to invite me in because you don’t want me to meet your mom. Scared she wouldn’t like me?”

I heaved in a breath, wondering if how he didn’t get it. I couldn’t invite him in because I didn’t know what we were. If we had been friends, it would have been much easier. I would have been able to look my mom in the eye and say, ‘hey mom, this is Logan, my friend.” Same as if we had been enemies. But the problem was I wasn’t sure what we were and I didn’t want things to become awkward.

And he was wrong. Her mother would like him. She’d always teased me about how handsome he was and how she was sure he didn’t hate me back when we were enemies. So yes, I wanted to be sure before I took that step. There was only one other boy I had introduced to my mom and he’d broken my heart.

“That’s not it,” I told him, suddenly wanting to be done with this conversation. The last thing I wanted to do was make a fool out of myself. “It’s just not the best time.”

He nodded, though I could see he didn’t believe me. But knowing Logan, he wouldn’t bring it up unless he was sure I wanted to talk about it.

I sighed internally. We weren’t even dating and we were already arguing.

“I’m tired. I think I’ll go in now,” I said, grabbing my backpack and getting off from the passenger’s seat when he didn’t respond. I slammed the door harder than I wanted do, wincing. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He nodded again, and I stood there hoping he would say something as he fired up the engine and drove off. I shook my head. I was still figuring out this Logan. The Logan that liked to play pranks and crack stupid jokes, that one I knew. this one, not so much. This one was so in tune with his feelings. He didn’t hide things and I wasn’t sure if it was because he didn’t know how to or he just didn’t want to.

Everyone could tell he liked me, so why didn’t he just say it? Why did I have to assume on my own? He wasn’t shy to kiss me or tell me other sweet things that caused me to blush or my heart to skip a beat, so why was this one so hard?

Sighing, I turned around and walked to the house, my eyes on the ground. Maybe tomorrow I would talk to him about it. I mean, if he wasn’t going to bring it up, maybe I should.

“Lexi.”

I froze, raising my eyes. The last person I expected to see in my entire life stood on my front door porch, smiling down at me.

My ex-boyfriend.

“Trent?”
