Chapter 32 Some People Are Actually Rich
Matilda nodded.
"Then I'll go back and ask my dad, and have him sell the equipment to your hospital."
Adalyn quickly said, "Little girl, I'm the daughter of the director of Harmony Health Center. Add me on Messenger, and we can chat there if anything comes up."
Zoey rolled her eyes at her. "Even if my dad agrees to sell, he'd be contacting Matilda. What does it have to do with you?"
Adalyn was left speechless.
……
Around nine in the evening, Matilda returned to Wentworth's place.
She looked exhausted as soon as she walked in.
She changed her shoes in the entryway, hung her bag on the hook above the shoe cabinet, then walked to the living room and collapsed onto the leather sofa.
She'd been living here for a while now, and had grown to really love this sofa—soft, spacious, so much more comfortable than the hard wooden sofa in her old rental place. It let both her body and mind settle down.
Wentworth heard the noise and quickly came out of his study.
"You're back?" he asked, walking over.
"Yes, I'm back," Matilda replied flatly.
Wentworth could tell something was off with her mood. He sat down beside her and asked, "You seem like you have something on your mind."
Matilda pressed her temples with her hands, staring at him blankly, as if trying to see right through him.
Wentworth was a bit puzzled. She looked like she'd discovered some secret.
Actually, Matilda didn't know any secret. She was just struggling with whether or not to tell him about what happened today.
In the end, she decided not to.
So she brought up Zoey instead. "Wentworth, some rich people—if you don't really get to know them, you'd never know they come from that kind of super wealthy family."
Wentworth paused.
Had she found out about Charles's identity? Or learned about his specific position?
He stammered a bit, "Maybe... these people think money is just material stuff, not important. What matters most is how people get along, so they don't tell you right away."
To his surprise, Matilda agreed with him. "Yeah, that stuff isn't important. What's important is that everyone's happy together."
Hearing this, Wentworth felt relieved.
She didn't mind his identity or the fact that he'd kept it hidden.
He was about to take her hand and talk about his family situation, but Matilda spoke again. "That Zoey Turner from the escape room the other day—turns out she's the heir to Kensington BioTech Company."
"Zoey Turner?" Wentworth was stunned for a moment.
So she wasn't talking about him?
"That girl who kept clinging to me. She grabbed my arm so hard she left bruises. I ran into her tonight."
"Oh, that girl."
"Our hospital wants to buy that light therapy equipment made by Kensington BioTech Company, right? Zoey said if they're going to sell equipment, they'll sell it to me. I wonder if her father will agree." Matilda said.
"Sounds like she really trusts you."
"Yeah, she only met me once and already trusts me quite a bit."
Wentworth suddenly thought of something and asked, "So you went out tonight to talk about the equipment?"
"I..." Matilda felt guilty.
Seeing her reaction, Wentworth sensed something wasn't right.
After spending so much time together, he knew she was a simple girl who wouldn't speak up when wronged, just bottle it up inside. Besides, equipment procurement should be handled by hospital management—how would it be a doctor's job?
Wentworth didn't press further, deliberately changing the subject. "You probably didn't go to talk about equipment, but just ran into Zoey on the street, right? Did she buy you bubble tea? I remember she said she wanted to treat you last time."
Seeing he'd dropped the equipment topic, Matilda breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Yes, she did."
"Which place? Was it good?"
"Just a shop at Silvergate Mall."
"Oh, you went to Silvergate Mall?" Wentworth said.
"Yeah."
"Did you have a good dinner? If you didn't eat enough, there's food I saved for you in the fridge."
"No need, I don't have much appetite," Matilda said.
She sat up from the sofa, suddenly remembering she hadn't completed today's "hug mission" yet.
What excuse should she use to hug him today? She didn't want to make up another boxing training story, she'd already used low blood sugar, and pretending to faint—she'd used that too.
"Wentworth, what were you busy with today?" Matilda asked.
"Working on my brother's project, providing some technical guidance for them."
"So... is the guidance done?"
"Done. I just sent the materials over before you got back."
Matilda suddenly got excited. "Oh, that's great! Congratulations!"
With that, she went and hugged him.
Wentworth didn't move.
Matilda had been in low spirits just a moment ago, then the next second she was excitedly hugging him. He couldn't help but feel suspicious.
Matilda felt awkward too. This kind of sudden hug worked when both people were excited, but one-sided enthusiasm just seemed weird.
But she'd completed her mission anyway, so whatever.
"Wentworth, I'm going to shower and sleep. Good night."
Matilda ran off like she was escaping.
Wentworth stood alone in the living room, her scent still lingering on him—not just her perfume, but also the smell of barbecue sauce.
His expression darkened.
He picked up his phone and called Charles's assistant, Kai.
"Kai, help me check my wife's records at Silvergate Mall tonight. I need surveillance footage."
Kai not only answered to Charles, but to any shareholder of the Gonzaga Group.
After receiving the order, he immediately went to investigate.
Half an hour later, Kai sent the surveillance footage to Wentworth's phone.
The more Wentworth watched, the darker his expression became.
……
The next day.
Matilda had just arrived at the hospital when Wesley called out to her. "Dr. Spencer, why are you still here? Isn't the director waiting for you in the parking lot?"
"Waiting for me?" Matilda was confused.
"I sent you a message and called you. Didn't you hear?"
She quickly pulled out her phone and realized she'd put it on silent last night and had kept it in her bag all day, so she hadn't heard anything.
"You should go quickly, don't keep the director waiting," Wesley said.
But Matilda still asked, "Why is the director waiting for me?"
"It's about that equipment. Kensington BioTech Company specifically requested that you come along for the discussion."
Matilda paused. Thinking of Ray, she asked, "Why do they want me to go?"
"Aren't you acquainted with the boss's daughter over there? His daughter is setting up the connection for you."
"Oh, then I'll go right away." Hearing it was Zoey, Matilda felt relieved.
After she left, several doctors in the office started gossiping.
Wanda was curious. "How does Dr. Spencer know the boss's daughter over there?"
Wesley sighed. "Hard to say. Some people just have good luck. Of course, it could also be from doing good deeds—finally getting rewarded."
