Jay Lee’s POV
“Sir, may I come in?” Nick called from behind the door. He rarely came this early. In just an hour, I would be in the office. Why did he decide to see me here?
“Come in,” I replied, closing the document I was reading.
“Sit down, Nick. What are you doing here so early? We can talk in the office,” I asked as I stood up and walked toward the table where I put the wine, champagne, ice cubes, and some empty glasses.
“Thank you, sir,” he replied as he took off his jacket and sat down.
“Would you like a drink?” I asked.
“Yes, sir.”
I poured a glass of red wine into two empty glasses, then gave one to Nick.
“Drink up.”
“Thank you,” he replied, finishing half the glass of wine in no time.
“What are you in such a hurry for?” I asked curiously.
“I found out a few things. Do you still remember the case you asked me to continue investigating?” he asked. Both eyebrows shot up.
“Yes. About Jessie being switched by Megan.”
“Not only that, sir. But also about what happened seven years ago. When I went to Doctor Kevin’s nurse, I received news that Doctor Kevin drowned in a river close to his home area. The police had ruled it a suicide because of a lack of evidence, witnesses, and CCTV. However, Doctor Kevin’s nurse was convinced that it was not a suicide, but a premeditated murder. I wasn’t too sure what she was saying at first. After all, the police had been investigating for almost a year with no results. There were no footprints, no fingerprints, and no witnesses around the scene. This is strange,” Nick said as he inhaled and exhaled quickly.
“Then what did you find?” I asked, getting more curious.
“I asked Ken to accompany me to visit the crime scene every few days. I also worked with Tom to interrogate the people who live around Doctor Kevin’s house and the people whose houses are near to the river area. They all had alibis and claimed not to know Doctor Kevin well because it turned out that the doctor was a quiet person and rarely socialized with the neighbors. This made the investigation difficult. Because of the absence of CCTV around the housing and river area, I also had the idea of checking every car owned by residents that had CCTV installed on the dashboard. And my guess was right. God helped my hard work. Two houses close to the river area have dashboard cameras installed and the cameras are pointed right at the river area,” he said excitedly.
“Have a drink first. Tell me slowly. Would you like some more wine?” I asked as I reached for the wine bottle in front of me.
“No, thank you. Then, I went to the two houses and asked the car owners for permission to let me see the contents of their dashboard camera footage. Luckily, they wanted to cooperate, even though they were quite secretive at first and shooed me away several times. Their attitude surprised me, and I was sure there was something they were trying to cover up. And this was the climax. The key to Doctor Kevin’s death is indeed in that camera,” Nick said.
“So, what did you see?” I asked.
“Two men came up to Doctor Kevin while he was jogging in the morning. The camera showed 5.30 am, and it was still silent. Not long after, the two men grabbed Doctor Kevin’s body and forcibly drowned his face in the river until he didn’t move anymore, then threw the doctor’s body into the river to make it look like it was a suicide and not a murder,” Nick replied.
“Baffling. Who did this? And what was the motive?” I asked. This was completely out of the blue.
“Megan. She paid those two men to kill Doctor Kevin because he held two important secrets related to her. So, perhaps Megan thought it best to eliminate him as soon as possible to keep her secrets safe,” Nick replied.
“Two important secrets?” I asked curiously.
“The first secret is about Jessie being switched. The hospital director was suspicious when he found a dead baby in Jessie’s bed. He conducted a series of investigations, and all the evidence pointed to Doctor Kevin. According to his nurse, the doctor intended to confess, and then he called Megan and conveyed his intentions. And that was the first reason she killed him. Then, the second reason has to do with Mrs. Piper’s father.”
“What?”
“Mrs. Piper’s father’s accident was the work of Erin, Megan’s mother. Her motive was that she wanted all of Mrs. Helen’s treasure to go to John, her husband. She cut the brake line of Mrs. Piper’s father’s car, causing the accident. And the doctor handling the forensics was Doctor Kevin. He told Megan everything he knew that led to the murder. I got the forensic evidence and the police investigation from Tom and this is the copy file,” Nick replied as he handed me a copy file.
My God. I never thought Megan and her mother would be so cruel just for money and possessions. They will eliminate others to further their plans. How selfish and cruel. Soon, I would see them languishing in the coldest and creepiest prison.
“Good job, Nick. Tell Tom to prepare everything and then we’ll take this case to court. So, how is the kidnapping of my children progressing?” I asked.
“Tom has got the details of where Zac and his gang live. The police have also checked Megan’s apartment, but she’s not there. It’s empty. But, there is good news. Tom and his team have arrested Erin and Freddy,” Nick replied as he walked towards the door and called for Lily to get some mineral water.
Finally, one by one, the cases were coming to light. However, there’s something still nagging at my heart, but I didn’t know what it was. With Megan and Erin in jail, would my family be safe from any harm? Were there other bad guys out there?
Zac’s POV
Shit! The cops were standing in front of the entrance. What was I supposed to do? From who they knew about this place? Someone must have given them the information. Ah, I remembered Tia and Andy. Two traitors who deserved to die. They must have leaked everything to the police.
“Sir, get out of here. The police have surrounded this place,” one of my men pleaded with a panicked look on his face.
“But where to? All the doors have been closed by them,” I replied.
We were confused and didn’t know where to escape to. Maybe it was time for me to fight at the last second.
“Where’s Megan?” I asked them.
“In the next room,” he replied.
I ran to the room next to mine. I saw Megan staring out the window with a panicked look on her face. She was approaching nine months pregnant and would soon be in labor. I couldn’t let the police take her away.
