Megan’s POV
Mom closed the door slowly, then sat beside me.
While touching my hand, she asked once again, “What’s wrong? Tell me. You don’t look like your usual self.”
“Jay,” I replied.
“What’s wrong with Jay? Did you guys fight?” Mom asked gently.
“It’s worse than that.”
“Tell me. But arguments between lovers are normal. It’s a common thing,” she said.
“If you think so, then leave me alone.”
“Megan. Can you be nice?” she asked. It looked like Mom was getting emotional.
Then, we were silent for a while. “We’ve broken up. He asked me to leave his mansion, and he preferred to be with Piper. You must not know that since a few months ago, Piper has been working as Jessie’s private tutor. And at some point, Jay found out that Jessie is Piper’s biological daughter. Everything has been revealed. Our actions have been exposed.”
“How so? You never told me that Piper was Jessie’s private tutor. Why didn’t you prevent it?” Mom asked with widened eyes.
“I don’t know where or how she got the private tutoring job. Maybe Jay put an ad in the newspaper or something. I don’t know, I can’t think. And of course, I couldn’t prevent it. I found out about it after Jay accepted her. And if I blurted something unkind about Piper, Jay would get suspicious of me. He’s not the guy who swallows information without checking the truth.”
“Then?” Mom asked, getting more curious.
“I don’t know when they’ve liked each other. With all the facts revealed, their relationship became even closer. The four of them took a vacation on a luxury cruise that I’d never been on. Jay did all that secretly. And to make matters even crazier, he spied on me. He knew I have a special relationship with Ethan and he took pictures of us while we were making love on the beach. I am finished. There was nothing I could do to defend myself. My affair with Ethan had been exposed. Jay had all the photos, documents, and everything. What can I do? I’m going baffling,” I replied.
My mind was in turmoil, and I felt like withdrawing from the world until no one knew about my existence. Questions kept popping up in my mind.
I used to have two sources of money. From now on, the money from Jay would stop. He would only give me a large sum of money once, and not every month, as usual. That meant I can’t live my luxurious lifestyle anymore like before.
And second, everyone knew I was Jay’s girlfriend, the number one richest man in Valdirra. If they heard the news that I had separated from Jay, my self-esteem would fall instantly. Pride and respect would never be earned again. They wouldn’t think of me as an important woman anymore.
Third, if Grandma heard about this, she would pepper me with questions. That would jeopardize my position as the rightful heir for now.
This was because of Piper. She has taken everything out of my hands. Then I would take everything that belonged to her.
Mom rose to her feet and walked over to my bedroom window. Her eyes stared out at the back garden. She seemed to be deep in thought.
“Mom. Help me. I don’t want to know, I just have to get Jay back,” I whined.
Mom let out a long breath. “You never change and you started this whole thing, so why should I help you finish it? You should have learned from Piper.”
“Piper, Piper. I don’t want to hear her name. You are my mother, the woman who brought me into this world. Then it’s only right that you help me. If you don’t help me, then who will?” I asked in a lofty tone.
I admit I was upset. I didn’t expect Mom to praise Piper in such a way. Mom should have known that I hated Piper for a long time.
“Lower your tone of voice! Where’s your respect for your parents? Accept the fact that Piper is better than you,” Mom exclaimed with wide eyes and hands clasped at her waist.
“Ok, ok. I am sorry, Mom. Now tell me what to do. Don’t let Grandma know about all the things I did to Piper. If she finds out, then we’re finished,” I pleaded. Thinking about all these things made my head spin.
Mom answered nothing. She sat on the couch across from me. Her eyes were staring at the window. She exhaled a few times and her eyebrows furrowed. That meant Mom was deep in thought again.
A few moments later, Mom finally started talking. “I don’t think Jay will tell your Grandma about your deeds to Piper. However, your relationship with Jay being over will be known soon. All you have to do now is make sure Jay doesn’t tell your Grandma about everything you’ve done. Second, if she asks about your relationship, you need to give her a good reason.”
“Then?” I asked. For now, Mom was the only one I could rely on.
“We had to separate Jay and Piper through their kids. Then we’ll target those kids. But, do nothing soon because you’ll be suspected. We’ll let them feel like things have calmed down. When they let their guard down, then we act. We have to organize this plan well and not let anyone know about it. Do you understand?” Mom asked.
“Yes. So, what should I do next while I wait for things to calm down?” I asked.
“Give the impression that you’re fine and happy. Don’t show them you’re suffering. You should get engaged to Ethan right away. We need to be held a lavish party in this house and invite them. The point is to catch them off guard and make them think that you’ve accepted everything and are living your life well. Do you understand?” Mom asked.
“Yes. You’re the best, Mom,” I said as I hugged her.
“Don’t let your dad and Grandma know. Okay?” Mom asked.
“Of course. Today’s conversation is known only to the two of us.”
“Mom, I know someone we can work with. I heard that he often receives orders from many rich people,” I said.
“Orders? What do you mean by orders?” Mom asked curiously.
“They’re hitmen. I heard they’re sadistic and have no mercy,” I replied.
“D-don’t get in touch with people like that. It’s too dangerous,” she said. Mom’s face took on an unhappy look. She let go of my hug and hurried to sit on the sofa.
“You’d better find someone else to carry out our plan. Someone we trust. Oh, Mom will talk to Freddy, your grandma’s assistant,” Mom replied.
“I see you’re close with Freddy. Are you guys just friends from college?” I asked curiously while looking at Mom’s face, which looked troubled.
