Chapter 41 Do You Love Him?
Chapter 41 Do You Love Him?
Harper slammed the door rather roughly as she left Logan’s office. She strode out with a face contorted with anger. Several employees who passed her gave her questioning looks, but none of them dared to ask.
“Sir, what happened?” Christian asked, confused, upon noticing Harper’s strange behavior.
“I don’t know. Make sure she gets home safely.” Logan gave the order.
Christian nodded. The man quickly ran after and approached Harper. However, Harper ignored him. She preferred to go home by taxi.
Logan couldn’t rest easy until he knew what was going on, so he followed her home.
“Pack your things; we’re moving today.” Harper said firmly to her parents after arriving home.
Lisa and Liam were immediately confused and shocked. They didn’t have time to ask for an explanation, because Harper immediately rushed to her room to pack all her things.
“Where’s Harper?” Logan asked when he arrived home.
“In her room, sir. It seems the lady is angry.” One of the maids informed him.
Logan hurried toward the room. However, his steps halted as he was stopped by Liam.
“What have you done??” Liam demanded. The only thing he had left was Harper. No matter what, he had to protect his daughter.
“I didn’t do anything. I don’t know why her attitude suddenly changed either. She was fine this morning before leaving for work.” Logan explained what he knew. He also wanted an explanation for Harper’s behavior, which had surprised everyone.
“Don’t lie! Just tell me what you’ve done to my daughter!” Liam demanded. He roughly grabbed the man’s shirt, then raised his hand to land a punch.
“Dad!” Harper called from the bottom of the first flight of stairs. Both her hands were dragging a suitcase filled with her valuables.
The call stopped Liam’s punch. He turned to look at his daughter, who looked a complete mess. He released his grip on the man’s shirt collar, then ran toward Harper, who was holding back her tears.
“What’s really going on? What has that bastard done to you?” Liam demanded an answer.
Harper’s composure crumbled instantly. She cried and hugged her father tightly. Her sobs grew louder in his embrace.
Lisa approached, feeling extremely panicked. She had never heard her daughter cry this hysterically before.
Logan was at a loss for what to do. He felt completely at a loss. For the time being, he could only stand there and watch.
Harper cried for quite a while.
“Are you calm now? Do you want to talk about it?” Liam asked gently. He released his daughter from his embrace.
Harper roughly wiped her cheeks.
“The employees at Logan’s office humiliated me this morning. When I went to the restroom to calm down, I overheard their conversation. It turns out Logan asked them to insult me in front of all the employees to humiliate me. He invited me to the office today so I wouldn’t go to Ethan’s trial and cause a scene there. Ethan won the trial and was found not guilty.” Harper explained through her sobs.
Logan’s brow furrowed at the explanation. When did he do that? He loved Harper so much; there was no way he’d be capable of paying people to insult and humiliate his wife in his own office. As for Ethan’s trial, he didn’t even know it was scheduled for this morning.
“That man is a total scumbag!” Liam was furious. His fists were clenched.
“Why are you getting angry over such a small matter? Shouldn’t you have known this would happen? Ethan is his son; of course he’d do anything to defend his own son.” Lisa commented.
Harper fell silent. Her mother was right—why was she taking this so personally?
“It’s just a minor issue; don’t get so worked up,” Lisa insisted. “If we leave, where will we stay? Do you have the money to support us?”
Harper let out a deep sigh. “He said he loves me.”
“You can’t trust what men say.” Liam responded immediately.
“Don’t tell me you’re disappointed and heartbroken because you’ve fallen for him.” Lisa looked at her daughter intently. She really didn’t want that to happen.
“It’s not like that! I… I just…” Harper couldn’t find the words.
Logan clenched his fingers tightly. He also wanted to know Harper’s answer. Had she truly fallen in love with him? If that were true, he would fight for their love no matter how difficult it was.
“Don’t corner her. Harper is in a difficult position right now. As her mother, you should be defending her.” Liam scolded his wife.
Lisa looked deeply into her husband’s eyes. “I’m just trying to be realistic. If she has no hopes for Logan, she won’t be hurt over something so trivial. I don’t want her to fall in love with that old man.”
Liam fell silent. He felt that there was some truth to what Lisa had said. Harper wouldn’t have reacted so strongly if she didn’t have feelings for Logan.
“Be honest with me—you don’t like him, do you?” Liam asked, seeking confirmation.
Harper fell silent.
Logan swallowed hard. He even held his breath as he waited for Harper’s answer.
Harper looked down at Logan. She stared at him for a few moments. She did have a little hope. However, after everything that had happened so far, she felt that Logan wasn’t a good man. He was just pretending so she would stop meddling in Ethan’s life. Everyone knew how much he loved his son. Marrying Harper to save his son wasn’t impossible.
Harper gave a wry laugh. “There’s no way I could ever like an old man like him. I hate Ethan. But I hate him even more than I hate Ethan. He’s a hypocrite. If there were only one man left in the world, and it were him, I’d rather never have fallen in love at all.” She spoke with great emphasis. Every word she spoke turned into a dagger that stabbed her heart over and over again. Her eyes reddened, and she clenched her fingers so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. Her heart ached terribly as she uttered those words.
Logan gave a faint smile upon hearing Harper’s response. His lips curved into a smile, but his heart screamed in pain. He couldn’t bear to hear any more of the hate-filled words Harper was uttering. He turned around and looked at Christian with a gaze full of resolve.
“Take care of the divorce papers now; I don’t want to torment Harper any longer. You don’t need to hold her back if she wants to leave.” Logan spoke in a hoarse, trembling voice, then walked away, carrying a pain that felt like it was killing him.
