Chapter 42: Moving
Harper stared at the ring on her ring finger—it was her wedding ring from Logan. She didn’t know how much it cost, but she was certain it was very expensive. If she sold it, it would cover their living expenses for several months.
“Are you sure you want to leave?” Liam asked, wanting to be certain before they actually left the house. He could read the expression on his daughter’s face; Harper seemed very reluctant to leave.
Harper gave a faint smile, then nodded gently.
Liam and Lisa could do nothing more. They quickly made their way to the taxi waiting for them out front.
“Sir, Ma’am, let me drive you there. Let me help.” Robin insisted a little. He felt terribly heartbroken because the Salim family was leaving without him. He wanted to go with them, but his employment contract with Logan couldn’t just be terminated. He also didn’t want to be a burden to them.
“Robin, we’ll come back to pick you and the others up once all my business is settled. Just be patient a little longer. I promise, as long as the Salim family remains in power, you can work with us for as long as you want," Liam said firmly.
Robin could no longer argue. He could only watch as the taxi drove them away from there.
“Maybe I should tell Mrs. Harper that Mr. Thompson was the one who saved her back then, not the man who nearly killed her. Maybe that would change her mind about getting a divorce,” Robin muttered softly.
Meanwhile, Harper remained silent the entire ride. Her head was bowed. She stared at her wedding ring for a long time. She stroked the diamond on the ring very gently. Liam and Lisa, who had been watching her the whole time, looked very worried about their daughter’s condition. Harper who was with them now seemed very different from Harper they knew before.
Harper sighed heavily.
“Please stop for a moment; I have something to take care of.” Harper said quickly as the taxi passed a jewelry store.
The taxi stopped abruptly.
Harper quickly got out, carrying her handbag. She ran toward the jewelry store while reaching into her handbag. She took out a jewelry box from it.
Finding a job on short notice wasn’t easy. She needed money just in case. Plus, she had to find a place for them to live.
“I want to sell all of this.” Harper handed her jewelry box to the jewelry store clerk.
The shop clerk looked surprised at the luxury items Harper showed her. She quickly went to fetch the manager.
It didn’t take long before the store manager approached Harper. The manager recognized Harper as a long-time customer. Every piece of jewelry she had bought there was custom-made, and custom items are rather difficult to resell.
“Ma’am, why do you want to sell all of this? ” the man asked, seeking clarification.
“I’m tired of the designs.”
“Well, Ma’am—”
“I don’t mind a low price.” Harper replied immediately before the man could finish speaking.
The manager smiled broadly. He knew full well that Harper was a loyal customer who was easy to please. So, he would help Harper this time. After all, he was certain that Harper would return to buy new jewelry there.
“I can give you the regular price.” The manager quickly calculated the total cost of all the items in the jewelry box.
Harper looked at her wedding ring for the umpteenth time. She took it off and placed it on the table.
“How much do you think this ring is worth?” Harper asked, just to be sure.
The manager looked at her with a furrowed brow.
“This isn’t from this store, is it? It looks like it was custom-ordered from overseas. I don’t know the exact price,” the man replied hesitantly.
Once again, Harper let out a heavy sigh. She picked up the ring and held it in her hand. She was thinking very hard about whether to sell it or keep it.
“Ma’am, this looks like a wedding ring. You shouldn’t sell it because it will bring bad luck,” the manager advised.
Harper didn’t answer. She put the ring in her bag, then asked the manager to transfer the money for the jewelry to her account. After finishing her business, she returned to the taxi.
“Where were you? Why did it take so long?” Lisa asked worriedly.
“I was in the restroom; my stomach was hurting a little," Harper lied. She didn’t want to upset her parents if she told them she’d sold her jewelry.
“We should go to the doctor,” Liam suggested.
“We don’t have any money,” Lisa said, frustrated. They, who were usually flush with cash, now had none at all.
“Sean called me this morning. We can stay at his apartment. We can borrow money from him to take Harper to the doctor.” Liam said anxiously.
“Dad, Sean and his family are also affected by the Salim Group’s closure. We can’t make their lives harder.” Harper objected.
“Sean is your cousin. Ever since he was a child, his family has always been helped by your father. Even the Salim Group, which he founded with such hard work, is now a family business. It’s only fair that they help us,” Lisa said firmly.
“I have money, so there’s no need to worry about that,” Harper tried to reassure her.
“Don’t take on everything by yourself. Let’s go to Sean’s apartment now," Liam said firmly.
Harper could no longer argue.
The taxi sped toward Sean’s luxurious apartment. Since Sean’s assets were in his personal name and he didn’t work under the Salim Group, his assets were off-limits to investigation.
“Uncle.” Sean greeted them warmly when Harper and her parents arrived.
Sean’s parents also welcomed them. Although the apartment was luxurious and spacious, it didn’t seem very roomy with six people living there.
“Sorry for the trouble, Auntie. I’ve told Mom and Dad to look for a cheap apartment to rent. But they want to stay here.” Harper felt bad.
“It’s okay. You can stay here as long as you like. I’m sorry I can’t help much since our finances are also tight after all our assets were frozen. We can only rely on Sean. You can stay here; we’ll stay at another relative’s house.” Sean’s mother replied kindly.
Harper felt grateful; it turned out her uncle’s wife wasn’t as bad as she’d thought. They weren’t particularly close, so she didn’t really understand her personality.
“Where’s your husband? Didn’t he come along?” Sean asked, just to be sure. He glanced back, thinking Logan would catch up.
“Oh right, I forgot to tell you. Harper’s getting a divorce, so please don’t ask about that jerk again.” Liam said irritably.
