Chapter 60 060
Chapter 60 060
Leo came back early the next morning. As he walked into the ward, he clutched a beautiful stuffed animal and two handheld game consoles. When Rue saw him, she behaved like a warrior and stood in front of Mona, saying, "Why are you here again, you big bad guy?"
When he heard her speech, he grimaced. "Is this how you teach your kids? To say I'm a bad guy?”
Mona didn't think Rue would be so rude to Leo, and Leo’s attitude made her laugh. "I've never taught the kids like this before. They are their own thoughts.”
Leo didn't agree. He took two paper bags from Nate and gave them to Rue, adding, "These are for you."
Rue didn't even look at it and turned her head away, saying, "I don't want your gift."
Leo’s face changed right away. "Is this what your mom teaches you?"
"That's enough," Mona said angrily to him. "My kids don't need your help. Please leave, Mr. Cox.”
"Yes! We don't want to talk to you.” Rue spoke very loudly, but Mona stopped her. "Ru! You have to be nice.”
Rue’s eyes sparkled as she ran up to Leo with a bright, phony smile. "Goodbye, Mr. Cox. You must be busy with work, so focus on that. Don't come back here next time.”
Leo looked at her in silence for a time before leaving with a frown.
Mona frowned as she watched him go. She knows Leo wasn’t the kind of person to give up.
"Don't leave this room okay? Stay with your brother.” Mona considered for a moment and then chose to go after Leo. "Mommy will be back in a bit." She had to see him leave with her own eyes.
Leo made a huge circuit around the hospital before finally departing, as if he knew someone was following him. Mona couldn't help but frown when she saw this. As she saw him get into the car, he suddenly turned to her and smiled a little.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she was immediately very attentive. She quickly turned and ran for the ward, out of breath as she pushed the door open.
Luke was sitting on the bed at that time and telling Rue a story. Luke was shocked at how messy Mona looked and yelled, "Mom, what happened to you?"
Mona breathed out a big sigh of relief when she saw that both of them were okay. "I'm okay. I was only scared that you two would be in danger in this ward.”
Luke and Rue looked at each other and then burst out laughing. "We're safe here! The nurse even assisted me with my hair just now.”
Mona was going to nod her head in agreement, but then she stopped. She looked at them with a serious face and inquired, "Did a nurse just come by?"
Rue nodded and happily showed Mona her braided hair. "Look, Mom! The nurse helped me do this braid.”
After a time, Mona pursed her lips and smiled. "Your hair is very pretty!" She clearly remembered that the head nurse had said earlier today that the nurses' rounds would happen less often and with fewer people because of a staff meeting at the hospital. They were told to let them know ahead of time if they had any specific needs.
Mona asked in a casual way, "Did the nurse do any other tests for you?" She was trying to hide her growing sense of worry.
Luke had a strong feeling that something was wrong. "Did something happen?"
Mona wouldn't tell the kids anything that would make them worried. She shook her head to calm Luke down and said, "Nothing happened. I only wanted to ask the nurse how to style Rue’s hair better.”
Luke sighed with relief and said, "The nurse also took some blood from my fingertip."
Mona’s face changed right away. She clearly remembered that Luke didn't need to take any tests today, not even blood work. It's not surprising that Leo left so quickly. There was a plan on what to do next. She was now sure that Leo’s team had gotten DNA samples from the kids. She was lucky that she had planned ahead and didn't fall for his trap.
••••
"The samples have been obtained." Nate told Leo in the car, "Our people have successfully gotten the samples from the two kids."
Leo nodded. He had understood all along that he wouldn't be able to get the samples if he got involved himself. That was why he had used diversion tactics and used misdirection to his advantage.
"The DNA test will take three days, and I will make sure that the doctor tells you the results as soon as they are ready." Nate said.
Leo grunted in agreement. When he got home, Sydney welcomed him with open arms. "Hey Leo, another ad company called me today to ask about prices! It shows that my work during this time wasn't for nothing.” She knew that people who used the Internet didn't remember things for long. Her own incident had been obscured for a long time by the constant flow of gossip and entertainment news. As long as she had different news outlets write articles that falsely cleared things up for her every day, people online could fast forget about them.
Leo nodded. "That's okay."
Sydney’s smile turned into a frown, "Are you not in a good mood?"
Leo rubbed his head. He then remembered how Rue had acted toward him in the hospital, which made him even more angry. He had very mixed thoughts about Rue. He never thought that one day he would wonder if Mona had surreptitiously retained his kids. He had never liked kids. He usually stayed away from kids that were loud and annoying. But when he saw Luke and Rue, he had a peculiar sense of familiarity. He started to believe that it might not be that horrible if they really were his kids.
Even if things had gone wrong between him and Mona in the past, he was determined not to let his kids be away from him.
Sydney softly chewed her lip as she saw him stand in front of her and look a little distracted. "You can go ahead and eat."
Leo stroked his temple again after writing a quick note and then turned and went into his study.
Sydney’s eyes grew sad as she watched him walk away. She called a paparazzo she knew. She had secretly set up for someone to follow him, but he didn't know.
Three days later, Nate sent him the results of the paternity test. When he saw the big "mismatch" on the test result, his face darkened again.
"Are you sure the test results are correct?"
Everything seemed to fit so perfectly; how could those two not be his kids
