Chapter 59 – Reunion
Chapter 59 – Reunion
Betina got into her car and drove as fast as she could to Mikaella's house. The whole way there, she was thinking about what she'd do to whoever had taken her friend. She wasn't going to let them get away with this.
She felt foolish imagining she could handle kidnapper mobsters, but she'd managed to handle her own biological parents, hadn't she? Facing down mobsters couldn't be that much harder.
She'd been at a small party when she got the call.
Actually, she'd been having her own private party in the host's bedroom, when suddenly she was interrupted by one of the maids. "What is it?" she asked, slightly irritated. The maid looked shaken, and that's when Betina noticed the other girls in the room were all huddled together, looking equally panicked. "What's going on?" she demanded. The maid hesitated before answering: "A young lady named Leona called, she was distressed, she said something terrible."
Betina stared at her, worried.
"What did she say, woman, spit it out!"
She sighed.
"It's your friend, Mikaella. She's been kidnapped and they're demanding a ransom. You need to get home as fast as possible."
Betina was stunned. She quickly gathered her things and left.
With her nerves on edge, Betina drove the whole way in a panic until she reached her house. She parked in the garage and ran to the front door, then noticed something was wrong: the door had been broken open. It was obvious the kidnappers had come in looking for Mikaella — but before they knew the two of them would be meeting up with Romeu.
When she went into the kitchen, she found a broken window: more evidence of the intruders. Betina quickly called 911 and then tried to reach Mikaella, but it kept going straight to voicemail... She called 911 and then tried to get in touch with Mikaella; she was frantic, and the police said they'd send someone to her house as soon as possible. Betina tried to remember the last time she'd seen Mikaella, but she'd been so drunk she couldn't even remember what she'd done the night before. She had to find her friend before it was too late.
She remembered the two of them had been in a fight.
Betina felt guilty — after all, they'd fought over something stupid, and instead of making up or talking it out, she'd simply left, she'd run away, like she always did.
Every time the two of them fought, she'd go off traveling and meet some guy who only wanted to take advantage of her.
David didn't know how to explain to his sister why his best friend and assistant was staying in the same house as him — or rather, why he was in her bed.
He'd always had a strict policy against sexual harassment at his office, and now what would he do, being caught up in this embarrassing situation himself.
He tried to imagine how the conversation with his sister would go. Despite being the youngest sister, Mikaella had always been very protective, and could end up hurting Leona even without meaning to, defending her brother — or hurting David to protect Leona.
But he needed to tell her the truth.
He pictured Mikaella getting angry, crying, hearing the truth about David and Leona. It was a painful conversation that would definitely hurt his sister, but he had no other choice. He needed to tell her.
Leona would get angry too, but she probably wouldn't cry. She was strong and could handle anything, as long as she knew the truth — after all, she'd known he had a fiancée.
David, on the other hand, was the uncertain one. He wouldn't know how to act, because he didn't want to hurt either Mikaella or Leona.
The situation was delicate, but it was the only way to put an end to it before someone got hurt worse than they already were.
He didn't know when it had all started, or who had started it — only that now the fights between the two best friends were bothering him, they were growing more and more distant, and it was all his and David's fault.
The fire between David and Leona was even bigger than the fire between Mikaella and Romeu; David couldn't deny he felt drawn to Leona. She was beautiful, and there was something about her that caught his attention. But he knew it would be wrong to act on those feelings, considering he had a fiancée, and a wedding already set.
Still, it was hard to ignore the fact that Leona slept in the room right next to his, and that his fiancée wasn't around. He felt guilty for not being at his sister's side in that moment.
He should have been there for her — maybe he could have stopped the kidnapping. It was his fault and he knew it. Leona couldn't forgive herself either. They both felt guilty for not having told Mikaella the truth sooner.
Fercondiny was the last person Silvia wanted to run into at the hideout.
Despite their shared past, she didn't know how to react to seeing her old flame again.
Silvia no longer knew how to feel around Fercondiny. He was the last person she wanted to run into at the hideout, but despite all the time that had passed since they were together, she couldn't help still loving him.
She still remembered the last time they'd seen each other.
He was still strikingly handsome.
When he'd been boarding for Montrisud, he was going to arrange the paperwork so the two of them could get married.
They'd been so excited, and Silvia had already been dreaming about her little wedding dress. Back then her mother was still lucid, and it would have been a dream come true to have her help prepare for the most important day of her life.
But the plane Fercondiny was supposed to be on had disappeared for months, and Silvia never saw him again, and eventually came to believe he was dead.
Until, suddenly, he reappeared in her life.
