Chapter 86 Into the Nightmare
“You’re using tricks, brother,” Dreams’ voice snapped, sharp and trembling, as if the air itself had caught his anger. “You should have answered the question. Why use your power?”
Lucifer’s laugh drifted through the dream realm, slow and cold, carrying a weight that made the shadows shiver. It wasn’t just a laugh it was a ripple, a warning, a shiver down the spine of reality. “Tricks?” His words cut through the tension like knives. “You never said I couldn’t use my power. Have you forgotten who I am?” His eyes glinted with a dark mischief, a hint of menace lurking behind the gleam. “I am Lucifer Morningstar the nightmare that haunts every dream world and you dare play games with me?”
He stepped closer, each movement deliberate, calculated, almost casual, but the energy around him twisted the very air. Their shoulders brushed, and the brush of his presence made Dreams flinch, as though heat had sparked across his skin. “Now,” he whispered, voice low and dangerous, “step aside. Let me enter Michael’s dream… or I will turn this world to ashes.”
Dreams stiffened, his hands curling into fists at his sides. The memory hit him like a strike to the chest: centuries ago, a fire that devoured everything, leaving only charred remnants of the dream realm. Dorcas, trapped in her own fears, her screams swallowed by the smoke, and Lucifer unflinching reducing the world to cinders just to save her. The echo of that destruction still lingered, a ghost in the back of Dreams’ mind, warning him of the chaos that could come again.
Slowly, reluctantly, he stepped aside. The air seemed to sigh as if it had been holding its breath. Lucifer’s smirk widened, sharp as a blade, and he slipped into Michael’s dream like smoke seeping through a lock. Shadows recoiled from his passage, twisting and writhing, the very fabric of the dream bending to his will.
The world around him distorted. The grass beneath his feet seemed to curl into black tendrils; trees stretched impossibly high, their leaves sharp as blades, brushing against a sky that pulsed with dark, restless energy. Lucifer’s smirk deepened as he surveyed the landscape, his eyes scanning every shadow. “Let’s see your greatest fear, brother,” he murmured, voice low and deliberate, “let’s see what truly haunts you.”
Far away, a mirror shimmered, dark and otherworldly, like liquid glass pooling on the horizon. It reflected not just shapes, but whispers, echoes, and twisted fragments of memory. Lucifer extended a hand, and the mirror began to move toward him as if drawn by an invisible thread, gliding over the warped terrain like a living, breathing entity. “This,” he whispered, almost reverently, “is what I’ve been looking for.”
But before he could reach it, a surge of recognition slammed into him like a thunderclap. Michael appeared, materializing from the shadows of the dream like a storm given form. His presence radiated authority, each step resonating with quiet power. Lightning arced and danced across his clenched fists, crackling with raw energy that lit the twisted landscape in jagged flashes.
“I can’t believe you would enter my dream,” Michael’s voice boomed, steady, commanding, yet threaded with disbelief like steel coiled beneath skin. The air trembled under his words, charged with a tension that made even the shadows recoil.
Lucifer didn’t flinch. He let the storm of energy crash against him, the force pressing into him like water against rock. Still, he moved forward, letting the push carry them both onto a field of impossibly green grass. Each blade quivered beneath their feet, as though the ground itself sensed the brewing clash and trembled in anticipation.
“You’ve bitten off more than you can chew, brother,” Michael said, his eyes burning, controlled fury coiling like a serpent ready to strike.
Lucifer’s lips curved into a smirk that was all sharp edges and teasing menace. “Seems Dreams informed you faster than I expected,” he said, voice low, silky, carrying a hint of amusement in the tension. “Surprised?”
Lightning arced between Michael’s fingers, converging into a sword that hummed with raw, electric power. He took a step forward, every movement radiating readiness and authority. “And what if I say no?”
Lucifer tilted his head, unbothered, his expression a mask of casual dominance. From the folds of his cloak, he produced Michael’s necklace. It glimmered, catching the storm-light, drawing the eye with a magnetic pull. Michael froze mid-step, his chest tightening as his gaze locked on it.
“How did you get that?” he demanded, voice taut, trembling with anger and disbelief. His hands twitched as if to snatch it from the air, yet something in him hesitated.
Lucifer’s tone dropped, soft, almost predatory. “You shouldn’t have given it to those in the Dark Realm. One day… it would find its way to me.” He paused, letting the words sink like venom. “And… what do you think Father will say?”
Michael’s jaw clenched until the muscles ached. His eyes darted, calculating, searching for a way to reclaim the necklace. “Give it to me!” he growled, raw and demanding, the word slicing through the tension like a blade.
Lucifer laughed, quiet, cold, letting the necklace dangle just beyond Michael’s reach. The sound crawled across the dreamscape like smoke, curling into every shadow, leaving a residue of unease. “Come and get it… if you can.”
Before Michael could move, before the storm could erupt, Lucifer was gone. Only a faint ripple lingered in the grass, a tremor of presence that whispered of power and danger. The air hung heavy, thick with unspoken threats, dark promises, and the weight of a war that had only just begun.
