Chapter 85 Mirrors of the Mind
“You are not welcome here, brother.” Dreams’ voice cut through the silence, low and sharp, like ice scraping against stone. The air itself seemed to bend around his words, carrying a chill that made Lucifer’s skin prickle.
Lucifer’s lips curled into a slow, deliberate smirk. “Or do you think I won’t notice when the mighty Lucifer steps into your precious realm?” His voice was velvet over steel, smooth yet impossible to ignore.
Dreams’ eyes narrowed, the shadows of the realm shifting with his gaze. “You break our rules. I promised not to enter your domain. You promised not to enter mine.” The words struck like hammers, heavy with the weight of ancient authority.
Lucifer leaned forward, the darkness around him writhing like living smoke. “I did not break my promise. I came with the Nature Key. Nature… is connected to your dream world. I walk only where the rules allow.”
Dreams’ chest rose and fell with measured calm, though his eyes burned with quiet fury. “So you mean… using our younger sister’s tears as a key does not count as breaking a promise?” His gaze sharpened, slicing through Lucifer’s bravado. “You always find a way, don’t you?”
Lucifer’s smile deepened, a dangerous glint in his eyes, like sunlight reflecting off jagged obsidian.
A faint laugh escaped Dreams, low and cold. He had faced cunning before, but here, in his own realm, he was the predator. “And why, pray tell, are you here? What is it you hope to accomplish?”
Lucifer’s eyes flickered with molten light. “Do I owe you an explanation?”
“Yes,” Dreams said, each word a strike of authority. “You do. I am Dreams. I am the king of human slumber, the shepherd of their hidden sorrows. I pull them from the depths of despair, shelter them from grief, give them moments of peace… a reprieve from the chaos of life. This realm… this world of delicate balance… it is mine. You are merely a visitor. And you are not welcome here.”
Lucifer’s smirk remained, unwavering, as if mocking the very air around him. “I hold a key from nature,” he said softly, almost a whisper, yet the room trembled with its weight. “I may enter anytime I choose.”
Dreams’ lips curved into a smile that was sharp enough to draw blood. “That may be true, brother… but not welcome,” he said, his voice a blend of amusement and menace.
Lucifer’s gaze darkened, narrowing into two molten slits. “Then ask me your questions. If I pass, I leave unscathed.”
A low, echoing laugh rose from Dreams’ chest, filling the realm with vibrations that made shadows twist and shiver. “Then… let’s see if you can.”
Dreams raised a hand slowly, deliberately, and the air above them rippled like liquid glass. Mirrors emerged from the darkness, growing, stretching, and multiplying until infinity seemed to bend and fracture. In each reflection, figures twisted in impossible shapes, trapped mid-motion within their own dreams. Some screamed silently, mouths moving but no sound escaping. Some wept in frozen anguish. Others stared with hollow eyes, their faces pale and empty, as if all hope had been drained from them. Shadows clung to their forms like venomous snakes, writhing and coiling around their limbs.
“These,” Dreams’ voice was a low hum, both terrifying and tender, echoing in every corner, “are souls caught in their own dreams. Some have long since passed from the real world, their bodies buried beneath the earth. And yet… among all these…” He let the words hang, heavy as iron, “only one still breathes, trapped between sleep and waking. Can you find her?”
Lucifer’s jaw tightened. His eyes darted across the mirrors, searching. The reflections flickered and shimmered, the faces twisting into grotesque versions of themselves, whispering impossible words, murmuring things that made the stomach twist and the mind reel. Every mirror seemed alive, a separate world of despair, drawing at the edges of his patience.
He could feel the weight of Dreams’ power pressing against him, like the deep water of a black ocean, cold and unyielding. Every instinct screamed at him to flee but he could not. Not now.
The trickery was subtle, impossible to escape. Each mirror was threaded with Dreams’ cunning, strands of nightmare woven so tightly that even Lucifer, master of Hell, could not untangle them with a glance. Yet, his gaze was steady. His mind, razor-sharp, began to cut through the illusions, tracking the faintest trace of warmth the subtle flicker of life among the deathlike forms.
“This is the game,” Dreams continued, a cold grin tracing his face. “I have used it on two of our brothers, who vanished and have not been found. Fail, and you will never leave this realm. I am Dreams. I shape nightmares and delights alike. Here, I am hunter and host. And you…” He leaned forward, voice dropping, “you are my guest. Welcome to my world.”
Lucifer’s chest swelled. The air vibrated with his presence. “I am Lucifer Morningstar,” he roared. The dream realm trembled under his command. “King of Hell, father of all demons, I summon you! All humans in these dreams, awaken! Face the nightmares I bring!”
The mirrors quivered, then shattered one by one, shards spinning in slow motion. Only a single mirror remained.
Inside, a little girl played. Her laughter, fragile and real, echoed in the silence. At Lucifer’s command, the sound stilled. Her tiny figure dissolved, leaving only emptiness. Lucifer turned to Dreams, eyes burning.
“I have answered your challenge. The path is clear,” he said. “Now it is your turn to honor your promise.”
Dreams’ lips twitched, amused yet wary. “Do not think, brother, that I will make it easy,” he whispered.
Lucifer stepped closer, the ground beneath them trembling. “I never do,” he murmured, a dangerous calm settling in the space between them.
