Chapter 102 Daughters of Darkness
“I still can’t believe Father let us step into the human world,” Nyx muttered. Her fingers tightened around the blood-filled glass until the veins in her hand glowed faintly blue. “Even convincing him that little bit felt impossible.”
Ravenna lounged on the velvet chaise as though she owned the hotel, tilting her glass so the crimson liquid caught the light. “Father will always choose his throne over anything,” she said with a slow, cutting smile. “If he could trade his beloved wife for power, what are we? Two shadows he pretends to care for.” Her voice dropped into a purr. “Besides… we’re only here for that Selena girl.”
A faint hum pulsed through the vampire hotel the quiet murmur of immortal beings behind closed doors, the clink of crystal glasses, the soft thump of heartbeat-like music somewhere below. The chandeliers overhead dripped ruby crystals, casting rippling blood-red patterns across the marble floor.
Ravenna rose and moved toward the floor-to-ceiling window. The night wrapped around her like a lover: cold, glittering, dangerous. The human city glowed beneath her feet, unaware of the monsters watching from above. Cars streaked past like veins of light, and skyscrapers pierced the sky like steel fangs.
Nyx crossed her legs, her stilettos dangling lazily as she watched her sister. “What do you think we should do with Selena before we take her to Dad?” she asked, voice low, almost eager.
Ravenna set her glass on the nearest table, the soft clink echoing louder than it should. The air seemed to tighten around them. She turned slowly, her hair gliding like a curtain of ink, her eyes glinting with cold delight.
“Simple,” she said. “She’s a half-blood. Our sister, yes… but that only makes her more dangerous. More precious.” She stepped closer, shadows curling around her feet as though bowing to her. “Mother and Father whispered about her strength like she was a forbidden secret. Hemilune blood… rare. Sacred.” Her lips curled. “With her blood, we could walk in the sun. We could claim the one thing our race has feared for centuries.”
A dark laugh broke from her throat. “Destroying her stops the prophecy. And if the world must bleed so we survive, then so be it.”
The chandelier lights flickered, as if something unseen shuddered in response.
Nyx leaned forward, tracing a finger around the rim of her glass. Her smile grew slow and wicked. “But sister… before we destroy her, I had a thought.” She dragged her tongue over a droplet of blood on her lip, savoring it. “What if we take her form and sleep with Lucifer himself?”
Her eyes glowed with a dangerous thrill. “Imagine carrying the offspring of Lucifer Morningstar the King of Hell.”
The air stilled. Even the distant hum of the hotel seemed to bow in silence.
Ravenna’s brows lifted, curiosity slicing through her usual calm. “A great honor… if he doesn’t discover we’re not truly Selena.”
Nyx shrugged, her smile widening. “How would he? We share her blood. We can shift into her perfectly. And once he believes she’s his…” She chuckled darkly, a sound dripping with wicked promise. “He’ll take us all night long if he wishes.”
Their laughter sharp, cruel, hungry filled the room like a curse.
“Selena won’t know what’s coming,” Nyx finished, lifting her glass and draining it to the last drop.
“Who are you?!” Selena’s voice tore into the fog, sharp and frightened. “Why do I keep seeing you? Why do you appear then vanish without saying anything?”
Her words echoed, swallowed by the vast, dreamlike silence around her.
The landscape stretched endlessly an ocean of luminescent white flowers swaying without wind. Mist rose from the ground like restless ghosts, curling around her legs. Every petal glowed faintly, casting soft silver light on her trembling hands. The air smelled of rain and old magic.
Across the field, the woman stood motionless. Her presence didn’t disturb the mist or the flowers. She looked as though she had stepped out of the night sky itself dark hair lifting gently, kissed by a breeze that didn’t exist. Her gown shimmered like woven constellations.
Slowly, she turned.
“Hello, Selena,” she said, her voice calm, soothing yet carrying something older than time.
Selena’s breath caught. Fear and curiosity tangled in her chest like vines tightening. “Who are you?” she demanded, taking a shaky step back. “Why do you keep appearing to me?”
“My name is Dorcas,” the woman replied, her eyes warm but impossibly deep. “Some call me Nature. Others call me the Universe. Some call me Peace.” Her gaze softened further. “I am Lucifer’s sister. And you see me because this” she lifted a hand, the mist swirling around her fingers “is the only place my brother cannot forbid me from coming.”
A tremor ran through Selena. There was no malice in Dorcas’s face, yet her presence pressed against Selena’s senses, heavy with power as if the world itself leaned in to listen to her.
“Don’t be afraid, child,” Nature said gently. “I mean you no harm.”
She began to walk toward her. The glowing flowers bowed beneath her feet, lighting her path like worshippers acknowledging their queen. Each step came with the faint whisper of wind, though the air remained still.
Selena’s instinct begged her to run. But something warm wrapped around her heart comforting, familiar, like the feeling of being held as a child. She didn’t move.
“So… I’m dreaming?” Selena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Yes, child,” Nature replied. “You are dreaming.”
“But why do you want to see me?”
Nature stopped just inches away, close enough that Selena could feel the faint warmth radiating from her. She lifted her hand slowly, giving Selena time to pull away.
“May I?” she asked softly.
Selena hesitated, then nodded.
Nature’s fingertips touched hers warm, tender, like sunlight filtered through cloth. The moment their skin met, a soft vibration rippled through the dreamscape; the mist swirled, the flowers brightened, and Selena felt something ancient brushing against her consciousness.
“I needed to know,” Nature whispered, closing her eyes, her voice quieter than breath. “I needed to see the child who is weakening my power.”
Selena flinched, instinctively trying to pull away, but Nature held her not with force, but with steady calm, like someone preventing a frightened bird from hurting itself.
“I will not harm you,” she said. “I am Peace. I do not bring harm.”
The glowing field dimmed around them, as though the dream itself inhaled.
Nature’s breathing stopped.
Her eyes flew open.
Confusion. Shock. Then fear a raw, cold fear that didn’t belong on a face like hers.
“This can’t be…” she whispered, stepping back. “Your power it’s fully awakened.”
The wind rose suddenly, stirring the mist into frantic swirls.
Nature’s gaze locked onto Selena, wide and shimmering with dread.
“The havoc is about to start.”
