Chapter 41
"Damn it Olivia, is nothing easy with you? If he loved you that much why didn't he come all this way to rescue you? I bet he was already with Hannah and forgot the mess he made of your life."
I felt the tears streaming down my face. I was totally stunned still by the new news.
Was I really expecting a son or daughter from Josh? What did this really mean? Was love enough for that?
"I will stop them from getting to you, and I will give you three days! Do you understand?"
"Petros take off those handcuffs! For God's sake!"
"Don't ask me to treat you with some leniency, you want what? A pregnant woman's treatment now? Listen, if this baby was mine... You'd have everything! But you insisted on the wrong thing... Again! Take the time to think! I guarantee that no one will come here to fill you up."
He left, slamming the door behind him. That warm feeling all over my skin invaded me, invaded my thoughts and my heart. I felt it coursing through my veins. I wondered if my mother felt this way too, if she was as afraid as I was. If she waited our last moments for Adam to show up to rescue her, or if she died thinking that she had never really been loved.
I pretended over that soft heart of mine that I didn't care, but all I wanted was to call Josh. To tell him the truth, that this was the time he would prove his love to me! Now I would know exactly how he really felt about me! Would he abandon me when he heard about this child? What did this child mean from that moment on?
Would we be the first hybrid kingdom in the whole world?
Many things were confused in my mind, in many different ways, I felt something like fever all the time. My body ached, and I felt that something was killing me from the inside out.
Was something like this unnatural? Was my son sensing my ancestry trying to finish me off?
I couldn't define anything at that moment.
I just put my head under the pillows trying to imagine how long it would take for Petros to come back here and kick my belly hard so that Josh's seed would never come to life.
What would Josh say? Would he be happy? Would he ignore this fact? Would he be angry? I blamed myself, even though I knew none of it was my fault!
If only he knew!
I thought about my mother's letter, I felt the same way she did, the same way she felt when she was writing that to Adam. Fear, hopelessness, unbearable pain and a heat that made me sweat.
And for a person who never knew what that feeling was, it was a real living death.
I just hope that God has some purpose in all of this, after all, I hope I am not just a side effect of fate!
I was cooped up for two days, no one even bothered to check on me. I felt the fever running through my whole body, and taking me by storm. I had insights from scenes with Josh, as we kissed passionately.
I could feel his touches on my skin, some scenes were running through my mind in an endless loop.
The guard I had seen on the reservation entered the room, urgently he placed his icy hand on my arm.
"I knew it! Damn it! We need to get out of here as soon as possible!"
"What? What are you talking about, are you crazy?"
"I'll warn Josh about your situation, or you'll end up dying here."
I couldn't understand what he was talking about, because my body was burning with intense heat.
"You'll feel better when you're out of here okay?"
He calmed me down, left the room again, and I thought for a few times that this was a good dream! Just a daydream in my head to justify it.
The coming and going in my room did not happen, I bet Petros was behind absolutely everything! He did not want anyone to know that I was carrying the child of his enemy inside me.
As the days went by, despite the intense hunger that I felt, I felt a little smaller. The fever had gone down, and my skin wasn't so hot anymore. But it didn't return to its normal temperature. I felt even a little human on this occasion.
When Petros entered my room I knew well what he was doing there, I knew that he would try to convince me by any means to get rid of the fetus still growing in my body. And I, of course, was undeterred.
"So, have you made your decision? I can't keep you hidden away here forever, Olivia! One hour your father will know about this monster inside you, and then what will I tell him?"
"You won't say anything, because that's not your problem."
"It is my problem yes, considering I am your fiancé! Hi, did you forget about our engagement?"
"I have no commitment to you! Petros what is your problem?"
"Besides the fact that you are... Waiting for this... Thing... I guess none."
I couldn't sketch any reaction other than extreme disgust.
I remembered the words of the man I didn't even know the name of, saying that he would warn Josh about my situation. And that gave me a certain kind of hope. And as Petros spewed out a bunch of facts that I didn't give a damn about, I thought about Josh.
I felt like crying a few times, because in that situation I needed to be saved. I needed him there at that moment, but I realized that I should hold back my tears. My suffering was not yet beginning, at least that's what I told myself so I wouldn't be disappointed.
As Petros walked out the door, I counted the hours and every moment to be in Josh's arms again. I stared at the ceiling in an attempt to make the time pass more quickly.
And when finally the day darkened, three days after those events, someone opened my door.
I looked around desperately, but it wasn't Josh.
Another day went by after that, and I looked there in despair, but it wasn't Josh.
And when I had simply given up looking and settled my gaze on the ceiling I heard the sound of the door, it opened softly, and closed slowly. Tears streamed down my disappointed face. Some nanny to toast me.
And when I felt the warm touch of hands against my face, I stared into the eyes of the love of my life. And I swore to myself that this was a mirage, one of my daydreams, one of my mental reveries. So I just smiled, without despair. So that the fantasy wouldn't go away.
"Hi, my love, I've come to get you. Let's go home!"
he said against my face still in shock, and I didn't realize it was really Josh until I felt his warm breath against my cheek. It was either him, or I had honed the ability to tell lies inside my head.
The cuffs were released from my hand, and as he kissed me, he brushed his lips against mine so hard, as if I was going to disappear. And it was not possible that that was not in fact real.
"Josh..."
I said widening my eyes, trying to take in the reality that was too beautiful.
"Just hold on to me, I'll take you to safety."
