Chapter 81 Why Did He Help Me?
Chapter 81 Why Did He Help Me?
Ethan
When we got deep into the woods, tracking Hazel's location and still searching for her.
Maverick heard sounds coming from a distant place and halted my movement with his voice.
“I think I can hear something,” he muttered.
We both stopped, and the rustling sounds of leaves also ceased.
We listened attentively to the sounds coming from anywhere, but all I heard was the wind blowing by.
I strained my ears, trying to hear the sounds Maverick had talked about, and only after a few seconds passed did I hear the clashing sounds of swords.
My face lit up, and my gaze snapped towards where the sound came from.
“Here!” Maverick said, pointing his hand towards our right-hand side.
He led the way, and I followed.
Together, we walked to where the clashing sounds came from, and I was quite surprised to see a fight going on.
Hazel was on the ground, her lips trembling as she looked up at the two people fighting. A man held her by the neck, holding her from trying to run.
Alpha Kimberly's beta and his son stood a few feet away from her, some people armed with knives and axes stationed at their backs.
I could tell those people who had attacked them were rogues.
The man fighting with one of the rogues made him land on the floor, but two others appeared around him, pointing their knives at him and pinning him down.
While all this was going on, none of them noticed the presence of Maverick and me, not even Hazel.
My gaze snapped to Bestat and his son again, and I could see them exchange signals. At the same time, they pushed the men at their backs off them with their elbows, then kicked them to land them on the floor.
Before the other rogues could take action, they sped towards Hazel, pushed the one holding her away from her, and picked her up.
Herald held her hand as they attempted to run, but the rogue, who had fallen to the floor, quickly picked up his sword and slashed Hazel on her thighs.
Hazel fell to the floor, wincing in pain.
That made my eyes widen. With speed, I rushed over to them, making everyone aware of my presence.
The rogues shifted back with a gasp, except the one who had slashed Hazel and was on the floor.
“He's a vampire,” one muttered, still moving backwards.
Not just a vampire, but the vampire lord.
I bent over the one on the floor, choking him so hard, all my movements invincible.
He coughed hard, trying to get my hands off him, but before he was able to, I pressed my hand into his core and turned his neck, taking his life instantly.
He dared to hurt her.
I snapped my gaze to the back to face Hazel, who was still on the ground, staring at me in shock.
She didn't say a word but just stared with her teary eyes.
“Are you alright?” I asked. My gaze was fixed on her, eyes staring deep into her soul.
Once again, I tried to figure out what's going on in her mind, but couldn't.
I can't read her, and that's pissing me off as fuck.
She didn't give a response, and I knew she wasn't going to.
I stood up, facing the rest of the rogues and the beta’s comrades.
“Leave. If you had approached them for money or goods, then you must have seen that they have none. But if you want to fight me and die, then stay,” I said.
My voice was dark, and my gaze was darkened.
I expected the rogues to turn and leave, but none of them made a move, even though they shivered as they stood and their hands, which held their weapons, trembled.
Maverick was beside me, his sword already directed at anyone who dared to come at us.
But I didn't wait for them to come at me, I went for them. I already gave a warning, a choice for them to leave, but none of them took it.
With speed, I moved among the rogues with Maverick, taking them down one after the other without difficulty.
They are just people who have lived in the woods and tried to survive by taking anything they see; they are not skilled warriors who are trained to kill.
When the rogues were down, I breathed out in relief.
I snapped my gaze to where the Beta was and saw that he was already stepping backwards with his son, both of them waiting for the right time to run.
I ran towards them, but was blocked by the man cloaked in black. The one who looked like he was trained to die for them.
“Move out of the way,” I said to him with a glare, but held his sword out instead.
Before I moved to fight him, Beta Bestat and his son ran, their feet moving faster than their bodies.
“I'll follow them,” Maverick said hurriedly and ran after them.
I was left with the man who looked skilled and was able to block my attacks, even with how fast I was.
After a moment of fighting with him, I was able to slash his leg with his sword.
He groaned and held his leg before bringing his gaze to look at me with his eyes filled with venom.
When he stood up again, I thought he was going to attack, but was surprised to see him bolting away.
I wanted to follow him, but the sound of Hazel’s hardened breath suddenly became clearer to my ears.
I snapped my gaze back to her and realized she had been losing so much blood.
Again, I looked at the man staggering away, but knew I couldn't choose to follow him, over-taking care of Hazel.
I crouched down in front of her and placed my hand on her thigh to examine her.
Her thigh was badly hurt, but after my gaze cascaded over her, I realized she had been slashed in her stomach, too.
She was bleeding and breathing slowly and hardly.
“You are bleeding so much,” I tried to touch her stomach, but she slapped my hands away.
I didn't realize she still had so much energy inside her until she did.
“Don't touch me!” She glared.
I took my hands away from her like she had wanted.
“Why did you help me?” She asked. “Do you think that makes you a good person? Or does it make up for the crimes you had committed?” She scoffed.
I didn't say a word and only let her continue.
“Leave! I don’t need your help, and I don't appreciate you for saving me from those people,” she said, her voice laced with so much venom.
I sighed. “You are hurt badly. You can't make it out of here alone.”
“And that has no business with you,” she said.
She stood up with a groan. I could tell her stomach and leg hurt so much, especially when she had to put her whole weight on the leg.
But she took a step forward. “Don't follow me, I can find my way,” she said.
I stood up, watching as she tried. But it didn't last long as she collapsed to the ground right before she could take her third step.
“Hazel!” I yelled her name, but she already fallen unconscious.
