Chapter 50

Chapter 50
Damon’s POV

I had always known the kind of person Morgan and his family was, and I knew that dinner with him was going to be nothing but a test of patience. He was not one to hide his emotions for so long, he and his wife, but what I didn’t expect was for things to escalate so quickly, nor for them to blatantly target my mate.

My hands balled into fists of rage as soon as I heard the derogatory that his Luna said. My jaw clenched when she flashed me a smile.

“Do not misunderstand Alpha, it’s just that Eve here used to be as a daughter to me, I just hope she is happy.” She said, turning back to Evelyn with that smile.

I scoffed angrily, “A daughter to you? Really?” I could tell she understood the meaning behind my question, because her face fell and she turned away instantly.

The atmosphere suddenly became very stiff, and even their deceptively polite smiles now seemed forced, and the only noise was the sound of our breathing, because everyone had stopped eating, while my cold hard gaze was still fixed on the Luna’s face, forcing her into submission.

It was only after I felt Evelyn’s hand brush quietly against mine under the table, that I looked at her, and as soon as I saw the soft smile on her face, I instantly relaxed a bit. I took her hand in mind, stroking it with my thumb while she gave me a reassuring smile. I couldn’t help but commend how calm she was in the middle of all this.

But the calm barely lasted. Morgan of course could never help himself. He spoke up almost immediately after, as though he was trying to smoothen the issue, but I knew deep down that he was furious.

I had always tried my best to make sure I didn’t involve his mate, Julie in whatever battle we had, but she had it coming on, she had first thrown insulting words at my mate, there was no way I wasn’t going to shut her down.

She had been just a beta’s daughter before she married my brother, and there was no way her power could compare to mine, and that was why she instantly fell silent when I let out my Alpha Aura, and that must have annoyed my brother.

Morgan, desperate to get a comeback kept throwing little jabs at us, and of course subtle insults that were laced with fake compliments. He kept poking at Evelyn’s inability, questioning whether she could carry the task ahead, and fully take up the role of being a Luna with her disability.

My jaw tightened as soon as I heard his words. ‘Disability?’ how dare him?

“Evelyn darling, don’t get me wrong. I know you are strong and all, but it must be hard for you to adjust, right?” He asked, his face spread with a slow and deliberate smile, as he took a bit of his food. “I mean, its obviously no a small task to be a Luna, and it is nothing compared to when you are serving as a servant, it is much bigger.”

My hands balled into fists, and my jaw ticked in rage. He was deliberately saying those words, deliberately trying to bring up her past and embarrass her here. I bit my lower lip, the rage finding its way to my heart.

It took everything in me not to react harshly. That was what they wanted from me; it was obvious. I felt my wolf struggling to take over and come to the surface, and it took everything in me to stop myself from flipping this table, and putting an end to their disgusting charade. Taking a deep breath to calm my nerves, I tried a different approach instead.

“That’s very thoughtful of you to ask brother, I mean, for someone as brilliant as Evelyn, I have no doubt that she would do so well. I mean, if your wife could manage the role, despite her obvious shortcomings, then Evelyn would ace the role, unfailingly.”

The table suddenly went silent again, and I felt the air become tense again. It serves them right, I felt Evelyn’s hold on mine tighten.

Just then, Evelyn, my beautiful and fierce mate spoke up. I looked at her, to see her right smile, so sweet that it tugged at my heart and sent a wide feeling of happiness through me.

“Alpha Morgan,” she said politely, “I understand, and I am very glad for your help while I was with you. From serving, I have learnt a lot about how to do well as a leader, you do not have to worry. Plus, with my mate by my side, I am sure I wouldn’t have anything to worry about.” She kept smiling as she said this.

I felt a warm feeling spread through my heart, and I smiled inspite of myself. I could hear the trust and adoration in her voice, and my whole body arched to kiss her until we were both breathless.

My wolf instantly relaxed, almost turning with happiness that our mate trusted us so much. That was so satisfying.

Her words were enough to punch a hole through Morgan’s smugness, in a way that gladdened me. But Morgan wasn’t going to back down that easily.

They continued, subtly attacking her with graceful words, including Julie, who kept chipping in with those honeyed words that were laced with venom. Her claim was mostly to show that she didn’t see Evelyn as worthy for the title, as though it was any of her business.

Even though Evelyn kept her stand with graceful counters, it was obvious that those words were hurting her deeply, and it was breaking me. One more word from them, and I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from flipping this table.

“That’s enough.” I called out hardly, the anger flowing deep inside of me. I glared at them, hating the innocent look on their faces. “Say one more word about my mate, and I won’t regret what I would do tonight.”
