Chapter Eighteen

Lorenzo POV

My room was silent.

Not the comfortable kind of silence that came after a long day, but the heavy, suffocating kind—the kind that settled over you when a storm was coming.

I stood there in the dimly lit study of my estate, while ignoring the walls lined with books and trophies from a lifetime of power and dominance. The weight of the decision I had to make pressed down on me like a mountain, crushing the air from my lungs and it made all those symbols and trophies of my reign feel hollow, meaningless.

All that mattered was her. Arielle.

My wolf stirred restlessly within me, a low growl rumbling in my chest.

It hated this—hated the idea of surrender, of submission. But the human side of me , the part of me that loved her more than anything, knew there was no other choice.

Vincenzo had her, and I would do whatever it took to get her back. Even if it meant giving up everything I had to do so.

The door creaked open behind me, and I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Rafe’s scent—warm and familiar, the hint of cedar and smoke—likely from the kitchen seeped into the room before he even spoke.

“Lorenzo,” he said, his voice low and cautious.

“You can’t be serious about this.”

I didn’t answer right away just kept my eyes fixed on the window, staring out at the city skyline that was mine to rule.

The lights glittering like stars, did nothing to make me feel better but I watched it anyway.

“I don’t have a choice,” I said finally, my voice rough with emotion.

“Vincenzo has her, Rafe. He has Arielle.”

" I promised her that I would get her out, I can't just let that go " I muttered

Rafe stepped closer, his presence a steady anchor in the storm raging inside me.

“I know,” he said, his tone softening.

“But this… this is madness, Lorenzo. You’re talking about giving up everything—your title, your pack, a legacy and the people who depend on you. For what? A woman?”

I turned to face him then my gut raging and he took a step back.

“She’s not just a woman,” I snarled, my wolf rising to the surface.

“She’s my omega. My mate. And I would burn this city to the ground if it meant keeping her safe.”

Rafe held my gaze, his expression a mixture of frustration and concern.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said, his voice rough.

“A big one.”

I walked into my chair and leaned back against it, swirling the whiskey in my glass, watching as the amber liquid caught the light.

“I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life, Rafe,” I murmured, taking a slow sip.

“But this isn’t one of them.”

Rafe let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head.

“You sound like a fucking idiot.”

I set my glass down with a sharp click.

“I sound like a man who knows what he wants.” he groaned frustrated with me

“I get it,” he said, his voice calm and firm.

“I do. But think about what you’re asking of the rest of us. The pack looks to you for leadership. If you step down, if you hand everything over to Vincenzo, what happens to them? What happens to the people who’ve sworn their loyalty to you?”

His words hit me like a punch to the gut, and I had to look away.

He was right, and I knew he was right.

My pack—my family—they trusted me to lead them, to protect them. And now, I was about to betray that trust for the sake of one person.

But Arielle wasn’t just one person. She was everything, she was the one thing I never thought I would have.

“I can’t lose her, Rafe,” I said, my voice breaking.

 “I can’t.”

For a long moment, Rafe didn’t say anything. He just stood there, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes searching mine. Finally, he sighed and ran a hand through his dark hair.

“Alright,” he said, his tone resigned.

"If this is what you’ve decided, then I’ll stand by you. But you need to know what you’re walking into."

" Vincenzo is a bastard and he isn’t going to play fair. He’ll take everything from you, and he’ll still come for her. You know that, right?”

I nodded, my jaw clenched tightly

“I know. But I’ll deal with that when the time comes. Right now, I just need to get her back.”

Rafe studied me for a moment longer, then nodded.

“Alright,” he said again.

“What do you need from me?”

“Call the council,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.

“Set up a meeting with Vicenzo for tonight. I’ll make the announcement then.”

Rafe hesitated, then nodded.

“I’ll take care of it,” he said.

“But Lorenzo… be careful. Vincenzo’s not going to let this go easily.”

“I know,” I said, my voice grim.

 “But neither will I.”

\---

Vincenzo was expecting me.

When I arrived at Hell’s Pit, his men didn’t stop me, didn’t question me they just let me through immediately , the warm welcome was baffling but then anything the man did was baffling.

I was another piece in his game.

And maybe I was for now anyway but I’d be damned if I let him know that.

I found him lounging in a leather chair, sipping from a glass of red wine like he was some kind of royalty.

“Lorenzo,” he greeted smoothly, his lips curling into a slow, knowing smile.

" Want a drink" he asked raising his glass and I shook my head

" I'll pass"

“Come to beg for your mate?”

I didn’t react because that would have made him happier

“I’ve come to accept your terms.”

His smile widened.

“Oh?” He set his glass down, tilting his head.

“So you’ve finally decided what she’s worth?”

" I don't think it matters to you though" I replied and something flickered in his eyes.

Interest. Calculation. Greed.

“And the South?” he pressed.

“It’s yours.”

He exhaled a dramatic breath, shaking his head.

“You know, I always knew you’d make a foolish decision someday. I just didn’t think it would be over a girl.”

I kept my expression blank.

“Are we done here?”

Vincenzo let out a slow, satisfied hum.

“Not quite.”

I tensed.

“The ceremony,” he said, leaning forward slightly.

"You’ll need to make it official. A meeting with the mafia underworld. The Council. A proper announcement.”

I clenched my jaw.

“That's already being done.” I muttered

His grin widened.

"Good. Then I look forward to it "

The meeting was set for midnight, in the council building grand hall, I would have to make the announcement formal so I needed the Mafia council and Hell's Pit council to all be present for this.

The room was packed with the most powerful figures in the mafia underworld—alphas and betas, alike, all watching me with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion.

They came because I called, that was as much influence as I had with them, most of them had received a favour from me once or twice and the few that hated tried not to show it.

The air was thick with tension, the scent of power and ambition was almost too cloying but I tried my best ignore it, Vicenzo stood at the edge of the room, his brow arched as he watched me walk into the room.

I walked to front of the room, my hands clenched into fists at my sides as I faced the crowd.

My wolf was restless, snarling and pacing within me, but I forced it down. Now wasn’t the time for dominance.

It was the time to make my sacrifice.

“Thank you all for coming,” I began, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.

“I’ve called this meeting to make an important announcement.”

The room fell silent, every eye fixed on me as I continued.

“As many of you know, the past few months have been… challenging. The balance of power in this city has shifted, and it’s become clear that new leadership is needed to guide us forward.” the room erupted into murmurs and I paused, my gaze sweeping over the crowd. I could see the confusion in their eyes, because they all knew this was bullshit.

They hadn’t expected this.

 None of them had.

“Effective immediately,” I said, my voice ringing out clear and strong

“I am stepping down as the King of the South and my successor will be Vincenzo from the Hell's Pit " I finished and the room erupted into chaos, the whispers turning into shouts of disbelief and outrage.

I could feel their eyes on me, their anger but I didn’t flinch.

I couldn’t afford to.

Vincenzo stepped forward then, his dark eyes gleaming with triumph as he addressed the crowd.

“Thank you, Lorenzo,” he said, his voice smooth and confident.

Sly bastard.

"Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. I promise to lead this city with the strength and vision it deserves.”

I forced myself to stand taller, and meet his gaze without flinching.

This wasn’t the end. It couldn’t be.

As the meeting continued, I felt a hand on my arm and I turned to see Rafe, his eyes filled with concern.

“Lorenzo,” he said, his voice low and urgent.

“Are you sure about this? Once it’s done, there’s no going back.”

I nodded, my heart heavy but resolute.

 “I’m sure,” I said.

" Besides it's already done" I muttering and he shot me a disgruntled glare, I looked away.

“Arielle is worth it. She’s worth everything.”

Rafe studied me for a moment, then nodded.

“Alright,” he said.

“Then we’ll get her back. No matter what it takes.”

I nodded, my jaw clenched tight. This wasn’t over. Not yet.

I caught Vincenzo’s eye across the room. He smirked at me, a silent reminder of his victory, but I didn’t look away.

He was wrong if he thought this was the end

This wasn’t the end. It was just the beginning.
