Chapter 28 "Confrontation"
**Damon narrating:**
Elena was mad at me. She even set up a row of pillows to avoid touching me at night. But I pulled her closer to me, and I'm almost sure she liked it.
I was still angry and suspicious of her, but I needed to know for sure. I had to confirm whether she was lying to me and betraying me all this time. Elena didn't seem like that kind of person; she was angelic, loving, and patient - well, at least sometimes. But she was a good person, you could tell from her aura that she cared about others.
I went to her room after she left with the driver. Her notebook was tucked away among her things. Well, I'm not a technology expert, but I studied it for a while and learned how to hack and handle everything with relative ease.
Her notebook was relatively easy to hack. It took me a while to get in, I confess I was having some difficulty, but I finally managed to break into it.
Now, where would she hide something if I were her? Where could I find valuable information? I had a brilliant idea to check her emails, and there I found something that surprised me a lot. In an unread email, there was an attachment with the subject line: "Perfect Cooperation. Information Received. The reward has been transferred to your bank account."
I could hardly believe what I was seeing, my heart ached as if someone had stabbed it. I couldn't believe Elena could be so low and do this to me. Or at least I didn't want to believe it, but the email left no doubts.
I was speechless.
I leaned over the notebook, trying to process everything. My mind was confused, my anger mixed with sadness and disappointment. I needed to confront her and find out the whole truth, no matter how painful it might be. Elena had a lot of explaining to do.
My world collapsed in an instant after reading that damn email. I honestly couldn't believe Elena would be capable of lying to me from the beginning. Passing on information and making money out of it. It couldn't be that she would do such a thing. I wouldn't accuse her like this.
I investigated her, how come.
I wouldn't have proposed this marriage by contract without investigating Elena's life first. I found out that she lived most of her life in an orphanage, and everything she told me made sense; it was hard to believe.
How did she get involved in all this? In the gang, in the mafia. I don't believe she would betray me. Elena is not like that, or rather, that's what I want to believe. Fooling myself. Was my uncle right all this time?
I dropped the damn notebook.
I took a cold shower; I needed to think. I grabbed a bottle of whiskey and a glass, placed them on the edge of the bathtub, and sat there thinking. What would I do? Kill her? I wouldn't have the courage.
I needed to give Elena at least one more chance to explain herself. Or investigate her. The worst blind person is the one who doesn't believe what they see. In my case, it's me.
I had serious trust issues, but when it came to Elena... I felt like we could conquer the world together, and I didn't want to believe that this sweet girl could harm a fly.
I took a sip of pure whiskey; it burned my throat as it went down. When I was angry, the drink helped me release that before I went on a killing spree in front of me.
I got out of the bathtub, put on dress pants, a black dress shirt, and a suit over it. That was how the bosses dressed; I didn't walk around anyway. Rarely, when I felt bad, I relaxed and dressed more casually. My wounds were healing; I was feeling better, and my arm no longer hurt. I had to thank her; I was better thanks to her taking care of me, I couldn't deny that.
I didn't know what to do, so I lay back on the bed and thought about what I would do with Elena if she really was betraying me. There was no forgiveness.
I kept that to myself; I didn't tell anyone about it, not even Gael, who is my best friend and adviser. I was going to investigate her first; I was getting ready; I had some business to take care of at the house of one of the gang leaders who distributed weapons for me. Then I would go to the clinic to see Elena. I needed to test her a little more before I drew my conclusion because when I made a decision, I never went back. At least I couldn't.
I felt safe with her by my side, when we slept side by side, when we had dinner, and when we talked. I never felt like that with anyone else. Just the thought of all this going down the drain made me feel very bad.
I grabbed my car key, and I left the house. I got into the car and drove to the clinic, intending to test her again. Who knows, maybe discover something and find out she's innocent. At least I wanted to believe in that possibility. I stepped on the accelerator; I wanted to get to Elena as fast as possible; the anxiety consumed me in a way that even hurt my chest.
The journey to the clinic seemed to last an eternity, and I was lost in my thoughts the whole way. The image of Elena, with her sweet gaze and charming smile, contrasted with the suspicion that now hung over her. It was as if two worlds were colliding within me.
When I arrived at the clinic, I got out of the car with determined steps. I wasn't sure how I would approach Elena, but I knew I couldn't postpone the conversation any longer. With a serious expression on my face, I entered the building and made my way to the reception area.
****
I was dedicated to confronting Elena.
