Bloody war
Bloody war
'I want to leave, find work elsewhere,' I said, knowing that working for them and being so close, seeing Amelia married to William , would kill me.
'I'm still deciding if you need a bullet between the eyes.' Kyle glared at me. 'I should rip your balls off for daring to touch my daughter.'
His threats brushed against me, too emotional to care if I carried them out. 'You can't force me to stay here.
Yes, I can. You're skilled with a knife, but you won't get far before my men come in here and file you down with lead. We've spent years to get you where you are. My boys have taken you under their wing lately, and this is how you're going to thank them? By screwing their sister and then abandoning them?
His words hurt. All I wanted was to be one of them. To be accepted by the close-knit family and feel like I belonged. Even when I tried to reject them, the child in me longed to cling to any shred of attention they could give me.
It wasn't like that.
What was it like, Edward? Did you think he loved you? Did you think you could come back here holding hands and William would turn around and leave her? He'll never stop trying until he gets what he wants."
Kyle lashed out and threw an ornament off his desk, the metal object splintering a chair leg as it hit. Logan flinched and looked at his father with wide eyes. You think I want this? I love her. She's my daughter and I don't want to see her given to him any more than you do. But I've lost too much. She may suffer, but no more than she would have suffered with any man she would have married. At least she knows it. She will have all the wealth she wants, she can travel the world and buy all she wants. There are worse situations."
She turned to me, pointing her finger at me and jabbing it in the air. You will not fuck this up for me, do you hear me? What do you have to offer him? Your ability to get information out of people? You have nothing but what I provide. Nothing.
His words burned me like acid, leaving sharp pains boiling inside me. I had nothing to offer him. My love had been enough when we were in limbo, but in the real world, what did I have? A shitty house with three beds in a run-down neighborhood in Glasgow. A job that paid enough to keep me fed and pay the mortgage. Nothing to do with the lifestyle I'd grown up with.
'You're right,' I sighed, sitting down hard on the edge of a table and running my hand over my face. Harry rested his hand on my shoulder and squeezed lightly as Kyle nodded.
Good. You had to accept it before I could keep you here. Thanks for finding her and bringing her home.
Kyle walked to the door, gripped the doorknob with his fingers and turned to stare at me. I'm going to let it go this time, but if you lay a hand on any of my kids again, I'll skin you alive."
Harry slumped down next to me as we sat in silence, the whirlwind of events making me nauseous. Minutes passed without either of us speaking.
I wish he would marry you," Harry said quietly, looking straight ahead. I would have liked you to be my brother in a more formal way. You'd be good for Amelia, you know."
His kind words hurt almost as much as Kyle's harsh ones . Thank you. I've fallen so much in love with her. I don't know what to do.
Keep your head up. Someone is going to kill William one of these days. Maybe you two will get another chance. If you can wait for it.
Wait for her. Could I? My pulse raced at the thought, but my brain hit me with a dose of reality. Waiting would be nothing but pain. To watch from afar as she bruised under his hands, as she sat beside him while he groped her, her eyes full of pain and want to reach out to him. Protect her. He wasn't strong enough to do it. Yet another failure.
"I can't," I breathed, feeling my lungs tighten as my chest tightened.
"It's okay. It's going to be okay."
AMELIA
The days passed slowly as I waited in the cell in my apartment. It may have been much more opulent than a real prison, but it was just as confining.
I looked out onto the small balcony, as I had done every night for the past week, and thought seriously about throwing myself onto the bustling road below. The fall would probably kill me, but if I timed it right to fall from a truck, I could almost guarantee death.
I didn't want to die.
Although it was preferable to marrying William . There was only a week left to get to the altar and get engaged to him. The plans were finalized, escape was almost impossible.
My father had not even intervened when William had beaten me in front of him. I had been abandoned.
A biting wind whipped across my face as I stepped up to the railing, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. My stomach churned as I gripped the railing, ready to do it this time, to throw myself over and end it all. But Mery's sweet face flashed through my mind. Killing me would only put her back in my place. It would only perpetuate the situation. It would make my return utterly futile.
I missed Edward . I needed him to pull me into his lap and soothe my fears, to kiss me until I forgot my name. I needed him to take charge of me and let me escape my mind as I surrendered everything to him. A choked sob caught in my throat as I imagined him smiling at me, that cock-like grin lighting up his features. He had been willing to fight for me when no one else would, even if I had screwed things up for him.
I pulled away from the railing and returned to the open-plan living room-turned-kitchen. I lay down on the large gray couch and closed my eyes, which I only opened when the front door clicked.
Mery poked her head in and her face lit up when I smiled at her.
Good, you're still here.
Where else would I be?" I asked, joining her in the kitchen as she placed a pizza box on the counter. The spicy, cheese-laden aroma made my mouth water instantly.
'Climbing up the side of a building, escaping down a manhole, running away with a handsome knife-wielding maniac, you know?
"Ha, that's funny." I glanced toward the door that hid the security equipment behind it, before lowering my voice to a whisper. 'Did you get it?
"Under the pizza," she answered me.
"Gross." I squinted as she lifted the lid off the pizza box.
You know every time I come here they search my luggage and frisk me. It was either under there or up my butt. I think that's the lesser of the evils."
He was right, but still.
"Do you think it will still work?
Yeah, I wrapped it in foil first. I'm not an idiot," said Mery . I grabbed a slice and took a bite, revealing the sliver of silver peeking out from underneath.
I picked it up with trembling fingers and shoved it up my sleeve. I hadn't seen any cameras in the apartment, but I wasn't surprised that William was watching me.
"Bathroom?" I said.
Bathroom.
We locked ourselves in, turning on the shower to add some noise to our conversation, just in case.
"Do you really think you might be pregnant?" he whispered as I opened the package.
I'm three days late."
You didn't use protection?
We didn't have any and it seemed useless. I wanted to buy a pill when I got home, but I didn't have time. I don't want to ask William for it. Not until I know.
"It could be stress," said Mery , turning her back to me as I sat on the toilet and peed. I put the lid over the end of the test, turned it upside down and set it on the windowsill, swallowing spittle.
"I hope it's just stress." Oh yeah? I certainly didn't intend to get pregnant by one man while marrying another, but it would allow me to keep a little piece of Edward for myself. It was selfish and stupid, but my heart leapt at the thought.
