Chapter 294: Make Evelyn Kneel Down and Beg Me
Chapter 294: Make Evelyn Kneel Down and Beg Me
The attitudes of the Thomas family and the York family disgusted Evelyn, but what hurt her most was Michael.
For Elysia's sake, Michael was actually willing to do something like this.
"Michael," Evelyn said through gritted teeth, staring at him, "what exactly happened in the Thomas family? How did Eldon really die? You may not know every detail, but you must have a pretty good idea of what went down. You should also know what kind of life I lived in the Thomas family."
"Under these circumstances, you're still going to side with the Thomas family and force me to operate on Elysia?"
Michael's jaw tightened.
Elysia clutched his arm anxiously. "Michael, whatever happened before, I was just a child then—none of it had anything to do with me. Besides, are you really willing to just stand by and watch me die?"
Michael made up his mind:
No matter what had happened before, he couldn't let Elysia down.
He couldn't just watch her die.
"Evelyn, you're a doctor. Saving lives is your calling," Michael said coldly. "You should operate on Elysia as soon as possible. I don't want to force you."
Evelyn's heart sank completely.
She gave him a bitter smile. "Michael, since you're so determined to force my hand, don't blame me for fighting back."
Caspian snorted. "What can you possibly do? Sure, you're a brilliant doctor, but can your skills compete with money? Michael is the biggest power player in Harmony City. You think you can fight him? Easier said than done!"
Scarlett chimed in, "Evelyn, we've already tried to reason with you so many times. Just take the win and stop being so stubborn. If this escalates, you won't come out ahead. Everything we're saying is for your own good. Think it over carefully."
"Evelyn," Elysia said smugly, lifting her chin, "didn't you say Lavern is your boyfriend? Didn't you say he treats you so well and that you two have such a great relationship? Well then, think about Lavern right now. Don't be so stubborn anymore. Unless you're willing to sacrifice Lavern's life just to save face—can your conscience live with that?"
Evelyn's eyes turned ice-cold. "I'll figure out Lavern's situation myself. I don't need you people pretending to be the good guys. If you have time, you should worry about yourselves instead. Without me performing the surgery, Elysia is as good as dead. I know exactly what happened with Eldon's death, and so do you. I will send you all to prison."
"You—" Caspian was furious.
Evelyn knew there was no point in continuing this conversation.
She turned to leave.
Michael watched her retreating figure and immediately followed. "Evelyn, let's talk."
Evelyn didn't slow down. "Mr. Johnson, I don't think we have anything to talk about."
If it had been before this moment, she might have been willing to have a rational conversation with Michael.
But after he'd just threatened her with Lavern's life, she didn't want to hear another word from him.
Michael grabbed her wrist. "I promised Elysia I would take care of her for the rest of her life, that I'd stay with her forever. I can't break that promise."
"Mr. Johnson's love for Elysia runs so deep," Evelyn said with a cold laugh. "Well, I refuse to operate on Elysia. You can kill me, and I still won't agree. Let's see what you can do about it!"
Michael's eyes turned icy. "Evelyn, I don't want to force you. But if you're going to keep this attitude... Lavern is just the beginning. He's not the only person in your life."
Was Michael actually threatening to go after Delilah and Isadora too?
Evelyn trembled with rage. She wrenched her wrist free from his grip and slapped him across the face with all her strength.
"Michael, are you even human?"
Elysia rushed over anxiously. "Michael, are you okay?"
Seeing Michael's reddened cheek and the blood at the corner of his mouth, Elysia was livid.
"Evelyn, have you lost your mind? How dare you lay a hand on Michael?"
Evelyn ignored Elysia and turned to leave.
Elysia called out coldly:
"Evelyn, Silvercrest Medical is your company, right? I heard you perform dozens of surgeries there every day. Right now, there should be over twenty operating rooms in use, shouldn't there?
"You may be talented, but in Harmony City, Michael is the one with real power. All he has to do is find some excuse to cut the power at Silvercrest Medical, and all twenty-plus patients on those operating tables will die. When that happens, and the media gets wind of it, how will you, as the owner, explain yourself to the patients' families? To the entire city of Harmony City?"
Evelyn clenched her fists.
They weren't just threatening her with the lives of people close to her—they were threatening her with the lives of every patient undergoing surgery at Silvercrest Medical.
How could they be this vicious, this evil?
Even if Death himself crawled out of hell, he wouldn't be as cruel and malicious as they were.
Evelyn bit down hard. "So Harmony City belongs entirely to Michael now? Everyone's lives are in his hands? If he's so powerful, then let him go ahead and do it."
"You keep threatening me like this because you think that as a doctor, I can't bear to see anyone get hurt. But any harm that comes to them is caused by 'you', not me. If there are serious consequences down the line, 'you'll' be the ones responsible, not me. As long as I can harden my heart, your threats mean nothing to me."
"Evelyn, you—" Elysia sputtered.
Hadn't Evelyn always been so kind-hearted? How had she become so cold?
Evelyn's mouth was set in a tight line as she strode away.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. Evelyn doubled over, forced to press her hand against her stomach.
"Evelyn?" Michael immediately stepped forward and gripped her arm. "Evelyn, what's wrong? Why are you so pale?"
Evelyn was in too much pain to speak.
"Your stomach hurts? Why would it suddenly hurt? Don't be scared—I'll take you to the hospital right now."
With that, Michael scooped her up in his arms.
"Michael," Elysia blocked his path, "I won't let you go. Evelyn is obviously faking it. She saw through us and started putting on an act."
Michael frowned. "Elysia, don't make a scene. Evelyn's breaking out in a cold sweat—she's not faking. Besides, she's never used tactics like this before."
"Fine then." Elysia lifted her chin. "Earlier, when I wanted her to operate on me, she forced me to get on my knees and beg. Now that she's the one who's sick, if she gets down on her knees and begs 'me', I'll let you pass. Otherwise, let her suffer."
