Chapter 105 - LUNA'S BAGGAGE
"Elder Martin stop!" The council elders scrambled to save the thing that Martin had destroyed in his rage. They had used a hotel in the human town next to Thompson Spring pack. Checking out would be a lot of trouble if they let Martin continue to wreck the room. None of them could believe that Asher had chased away from his pack like that, his pack members had jeered at them as they were matched out of pack lands. An arrogant man like Martin could not take it.
"If I get my hand on that brat he will wish he was dead. What a disrespectful brat!" How laughable! If he really had the power to take on Asher, he would not have run away with his tail tucked in between his legs. Having been used to people fighting to curry favor with him, he could not believe that Asher would publically humiliate him like that.
"Yes! He has to pay! He dared ask the king to come and talk to him. That boy has grown too big for his breeches!" It wasn't just the members of the public that tried to curry favor with Martin, the council members did too. It was always said that the council members had equal standing. But they, as insiders, knew the truth. After being picked by the king, most of them never saw him again. They went around telling people that they had to go through them to get to the king, but that was a stretch from the truth. It was Martin that could most speak directly to the king, the others needed permission. "Why don't you ask the king to seek justice for you?"
"What? Do you think I am too weak to fight on my own?" No one dared to say the truth, so they frantically shook their heads. Angering Martin was akin to a death sentence. That is how Chris ended up being a council member despite there being no recruitment in a long time. Someone had lost their lives in broad daylight for getting on Martin's bad side. The king hadn't even batted an eyelid when he got the news. Wasn't that the biggest show of favoritism?
"I am going to make a call, I will be back." With that, he walked into his room. As expected, he had the best room out of all of them. He enjoyed making people know he was better than them. "No one should disturb me." As anyone would, they had barely managed to calm him down.
"Sir, I don't think we should let Thompson Springs Pack exist anymore. That Asher brat is too much. Would you believe that he dared to say that you should talk to him yourself? If you ask me, I think he wants to rebel." The man on the other side hadn't even gotten a hello out before Martin started ranting.
"What happened?" the King lazily drawled out his reply. He had long gotten used to Martin's ways. Like a child, Martin explained everything that had happened to them at Thompson Springs Pack in great detail. Of course, he exaggerated some bits and pieces. In his words, Asher and his pack members had physically assaulted them. He made it sound as if they had barely managed to leave with their lives.
"Sir, please seek justice for your people. A menace like Asher should not be allowed to run around." His voice was filled with aggression. "You have no idea how humiliating it was." It was humiliating, Timothy had made almost all pack members show up to see them being chased away from the pack. They had been jeered and laughed at by people that were underneath them.
Coming to Thompson Springs Pack, he believed he had the upper hand. Look how that had turned out. He could not accept it.
As he continued to report on his mistreatment, the council members were playing a silent rock, paper, scissors game to determine who would ask him about saving Chris. No one wanted to talk to him after the big outburst he had. The man that ended up losing the game was on the verge of tears as he tried to figure out how to approach him, especially after he had specifically asked for no one to disturb him.
He decided to write a note and pass it to Martin instead. That wouldn't be disturbing him, right? He gingerly walked into the room, handed over the note, and ran away as if he had a fire lit on his butt. Elder Martin, what do we do about Chris? Asher is holding him hostage, he might be in danger.
Martin only glanced at the note once. He internally sneered when he read its contents, then he crumpled it up and threw it across the room. "Sire, if the enforcers head out today they will be here before midday." Save Chris? Why? It would be better if he could die in Asher's Pack. Martin hated Chris. To be honest, he hated anyone that was born in a well-off family. Life had dealt him the shortest end of the stick.
"Martin, have you thought about the repercussions of wiping down the pack? Everyone knows that the online article originated from Asher and his people. If we wipe them out right after your visit, wouldn't that be equivalent to me admitting that I knew what was going on? We can't take that risk."
"We can say that they threatened you. I mean, that isn't a lie. They seemed like they wanted to rebel, the council members could be witnesses." Martin didn't want to miss the opportunity to get rid of Asher. Whenever he met the younger alpha, he always ended up in embarrassing situations. He always blamed Asher, but when one looked at it keenly, wasn't he the one that always showed up to antagonize the alpha?
"No, that is too risky, the council members were appointed by me so their statements wouldn't count. We should think of other ideas." He wasn't the king just because he inherited the position, the man was smart enough to analyze the situation well. He knew that people would be watching him closely during this period of time.
"Wait! I know of a reason we can use. They kidn..." Marting didn't finish his statement before he heard the familiar tone indicating the end of the call. He was going to tell him about Chris' situation. As much as he wanted the man gone, he was willing to save him if that meant getting rid of Asher for good, but he had been hung up before he could say anything else.
He sneered at his phone, "How dare he hang up on me! I wasn't done talking!" Humans and weres, our very own C.H.O Chief Hypocrisy Officer! Less than five minutes ago, he was going on a rampage about how disrespectful Asher was to the king. If anyone could see the look on his face they would be shocked. Martin and the king were supposed to be good friends, but why did it seem like that wasn't the case?
The truth is, Martin and the king's friendship was one of mutual benefit. The reason why Martin hated people that had been brought up in well-off families was because of his upbringing. His ancestors all worked for the royal family. Growing up, it was his father's duty to cook for the king. Contrary to expectations, he did not feel bad for his old man when he got beaten and humiliated. To him, this was the path his father had chosen for himself. If he wanted to be treated better, he should have made something better of himself.
He refused to get home economics training as his old man wanted. Instead, he went sneaking around the palace to acquire any form of skills. He tried observing and learning the warrior's fighting regimen, but that didn't work. His body was weak from growing up in the servant's quarters. His body wasn't cut out for brute force.
He figured, since physical strength wasn't his thing, then he would work on his intelligence. He had been caught in the palace library studying. Insisting he wasn't wrong, he explained to the king that he wanted to change his fate. He didn't want to be a servant, his determination seemed to please the king. He was given a chance to intern at the werewolf council even though such a position never existed before.
He slowly rose through the ranks, so to him people like Chris who used family connections to get things were the scum of the earth. Even then, he wasn't as close to the king. Martin's ultimate rise to power was when he walked in on Dr. Hann and the king in the library making plans for their new project. The king had somehow forgotten he liked using the library.
In exchange for his silence, Martin had been given what he wanted the most. Power! Having sworn to not be like his family, what could entice him more?
