Chapter 162 Life in the Dark pt 2
Seren
I followed the nurse into an examination room. She bustled about, getting things ready for the doctor, before quietly leaving. I sat, the amazement of the moment flowing over me.
Then it hit me. The tournament was barely a week away. I was needed on the front lines. I would have an active role to play in the fight against Mikhail—and now, I had another life inside me. A little life that would be at risk if things went south, if we failed. If I fell…I wouldn’t only lose Duncan or Gideon. I would lose my pup.
And Duncan? If he knew? Goddess, he’s likely to lock me in the dungeon just to keep me from the fight.
Kara snorted at my thoughts. ‘Not happening,’ she muttered. My lips twitched at her response.
He sees my strength now, my capability. He wouldn’t actually keep me from fighting, especially after his vision, but how could he go into it clearheaded if he knows what we’re risking? I needed time. I needed a day, maybe two, to really think through the best approach for telling him. This blessing shouldn’t be tainted by fear.
‘Kara? Can you mask the pup from him?’
‘I’ve been masking from you both for the last few weeks, sweet girl. I can do it for a few more days.’
There was a light knock at the door, then Doc Theo walked in. “Good afternoon, Luna Seren. What seems to be the problem today?”
“I think I’m pregnant, Doc.”
His eyes widened. “What makes you think that?”
I took him through the symptoms—the nausea, the fatigue, the dizziness—and then told him Kara confirmed it. Come to think of it, I probably should have led with that.
He took it all in stride. “It’s easy enough to test. Shall we?”
He took some blood, then had me give a urine sample. Within minutes, he came back with confirmation.
“Kara’s absolutely correct, Luna. You’re pregnant! Let’s get the ultrasound machine in here and take some scans. Do you want to wait for Duncan?”
“No. I want to tell him myself, but not quite yet. I just need a day or two to process this. It’s rather unexpected.”
He smiled. “Of course. Let’s get those scans.”
He left the room, then came back with an ultrasound machine on wheels. I lay back on the bed and pulled up my shirt so he could apply the gel to my abdomen. After a few minutes, the monitor on the machine showed a perfect little bean floating in black space.
“From the looks of these measurements, you’re about five weeks along, Luna. Given that you’re royal, and Duncan is alpha-blood, that puts you about a fifth of the way through. Normal gestation is six months for most wolves, but alpha blood speeds that up a notch. You’re going to start showing soon—probably within the next two weeks—so keep that in mind. Now, do you want to hear the heartbeat?”
I nodded. He flicked a button, and a fast-paced whooshing noise sounded through the room. ‘Their heartbeat is strong,’ Kara’s words radiated happiness even as tears collected on my eyelashes.
Doc Theo had a soft smile on his face. “A strong alpha heir already.” He clicked a few more things, then the whir of a printer sounded. A strip of photos rolled out of the front of the machine, which he tore off and handed to me. “I’ll let you get cleaned up, Luna.”
He stepped out, and I just held the photos in one hand, staring at my pup. I placed my other hand on my belly. “You sure picked an odd time to show up, little one. But don’t worry. I won’t let anything hurt you.” I spent another moment there, a quiet moment with the new life we’d created. Then I stood, tucking the photos away in the pocket of my shirt. The timing may not have been ideal, but that didn’t matter. This child would not know pain or suffering. This child would know love.
After all, the Goddess had not just given me power. She had given me a future. And I would not let that future fall.
