Chapter 161 Life in the Dark pt 1
Seren
My feet landed solidly beneath me as I finished the rotation for the roundhouse kick I’d just aimed at Tristan’s head. If he’d been any slower, he’d be lying on the ground unconscious from the force. Instead, he shot me a wide grin as he stepped back.
“Well done, Luna! Your form was excellent!” He walked over to the edge of the mat where towels and water waited for us. Picking up one of the bottles, he handed it to me. I took a long drink, then grabbed a towel and brought it to my face to wipe the sweat away.
Duncan was in his office with Julian and Lucian. He’d been trying to track down the whereabouts of Alpha Brian and his pack for weeks with no luck. The closer we got to the tournament, the more frustrated he was becoming. The three of them were making more contingency plans for the event in case he showed up there with Mikhail’s army.
With Gideon gone and the gathering around the corner, Tristan had taken over my regular training again. I was never going to be a great warrior, but at least now I could hold my own without needing to rely on my powers.
“Thanks, Tristan. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for you.” I smiled. “We’ve both come a long way since Blood Moon.” It was hard not to think about that place, considering we’d be going there in less than three days.
He met my eyes, guilt clear in his. “I still wish I’d been able to do more for you, more for all the omegas there, than I did. But I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve you here, Luna. I wake up with a sense of purpose every day, and that’s more than I can say for a lot of people.”
We turned then, heading toward the exit. As I spun, everything wavered. My vision went black around the edges, the world tilting as though the floor had shifted beneath me. I listed to the side, then Tristan was there, holding me up.
“Are you okay, Luna?” Worry coated his voice.
“I…I think so? I don’t know. Probably just a little dizzy from that last kick.” I tried to laugh. “No worries. Appreciate the save.”
He steadied me, his hands gripping my shoulders, as the dizziness came back. “We’re going to see Doc Theo, Luna. Just in case.”
‘Kara? What’s going on?’
‘Nothing to worry about, sweet girl.’ Her tone was reassuring, but I could tell she was hiding something from me. I thought back over the past several weeks as Tristan and I walked to the pack hospital. He still had his hand on my arm, helping me walk.
I’d been dealing with a lot of stress—we all had—for weeks now. It had put me off food, so I hadn’t been eating as much as I should. Then there was the general fatigue, which I chalked up to a lack of calories and all the training I had been doing with Gideon and Duncan. Between the stress and my upcoming period…
Wait. When was the last time I’d had it? It couldn’t be.
I flipped through my mental calendar, realizing I was at least two weeks late. Combine that with everything else…‘Kara? Are we pregnant?’
She didn’t answer immediately. Then warmth flooded through me and I could feel her happiness. ‘Yes, sweet girl. We’re with pup.’
As soon as she said it, warmth bloomed low in my belly, subtle but undeniable. I gently pressed my hand against it, as if holding it tight.
‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
‘I waited until you were steadier.’
We were almost at the hospital now. Tristan kept shooting me glances, but I just kept walking forward. I was going to be a mother. Duncan and I were going to have a pup. Sheer wonder filled me now. We reached the doors, and Tristan opened them. The nurse greeted us as we entered.
“Hello, Luna Seren. Tristan. How can I help you today?”
“Luna Seren needs to see Doc Theo. She had a dizzy spell after our last training session.”
“Of course. Follow me, Luna. I’ll get you settled in a room and let Doc Theo know.” She came around the desk.
“Tristan, I’ll be fine. You don’t need to wait.”
He looked at me as if I’d grown a second head. “Absolutely not, Luna. I’ll be right here when you’re finished.” With that, he turned and sat in one of the waiting room chairs.
